Pickpick

The ending felt very unsatisfying. The whole book I felt like the ending was going to involve divorce, but the ending didn‘t even involve a proper ending or closure. This book is funny in the way of a Troost book, but it had a much darker tone because, ultimately, this is his addiction and recovery memoir. It‘s actually heartbreaking in some ways, and it‘s hard to put my finger on exactly why.

GingerAntics I honestly wish there was one more Troost book after this one (this is the last he published), just to have that happy, goofy, inquisitive feeling of the first two books in this trilogy, and to know how things turned out. #JMaartenTroost #HeadhunstersOnMyDoorstep #addiction #recovery #alcoholism #audiobook 2mo
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury yes, very different tone to the first two. I have mixed feelings here. The ending was almost just “well, the deadline is in five minutes and I have to attach it to the email first.” Did that happen in his little one bedroom or efficiency apartment or at home with his wife and children? Who knows? We may never know. I really hope it‘s the latter. 2mo

5feet.of.fury @GingerAntics yeah he seems to have fallen off the map entirely after this (&there was@supposed to be another book) The opening of this book is amazing. His wife was such a trooper too (hiking on remote islands heavily pregnant, etc) so you just know he was putting her through it. 2mo
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury I love how she said if he ever drank again she‘d make him a eunuch. 🤣😂🤣 that makes me think she probably didn‘t divorce him… but then he ran away from home. I don‘t know. Last updated bio I saw say he lived with his wife and 2 sons in California. 2mo
Bookwormjillk I wish there was another book too. I enjoyed these. 2mo

I‘m not sure if this is funny or tragic. He‘s returned to Kiribati without his wife and children (apparently they have 2 sons now), having seemingly run away from home after going to rehab for alcoholism (at least he‘s not drinking), and he‘s waxing poetic about how things are just how they were when they left. It‘s funny in its way, but it‘s also heartbreaking. I seriously feel like this is a harbinger of divorce ahead.

GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury how am I not surprised he‘s an alcoholic? I‘m really hoping this doesn‘t end in him getting divorced. (edited) 2mo
Texreader Once you read one you have to keep going right? 😁 2mo
GingerAntics @Texreader seriously! Yes! I even want to read the one on China. 2mo
GingerAntics @Texreader I‘m just hoping he‘s not divorced by the end of this book… that shouldn‘t exist because they cancelled his contract for it?! 2mo

I‘m glad @Hooked_on_books ‘s review pulled this out of my library pile. Great novel about blended family dynamics.

Pia has been living with her scientist mother in Tahiti. During the pandemic, Pia heads to NYC where her cardiologist dad is scarce (busy at the hospital) forcing her to spend more time with her new (younger) stepmom than she‘d like. Bonds and trust are tested among all the family when Pia goes missing.

Hooked_on_books I‘m glad you liked it! I really like how the author focused in on these characters and really made their lives and choices come to life. I‘ve read one of her before and will for sure be looking for others. 12mo
BarbaraBB Great review. I have been meaning to read this since it appeared on the #CampLitsy24 longlist. 12mo

Pia is living with her biologist mom Natalie in Tahiti, but Natalie contacts her ex in NYC asking him to take Pia for a while. The Wi-Fi isn‘t adequate where they are for remote school during the peak of COVID. But when Pia arrives in NYC, it becomes clear she‘s there for another reason and she starts clashing with her stepmom. This is a very good look at family dynamics and failure to communicate. I really liked it.

BarbaraBB Sounds good. I think I‘ve noticed this one on the #CampLitsy longlist as well. 12mo
Megabooks I have this out from the library now, but haven‘t started it. Glad to read a positive review! 12mo
