The audio of this story of the Donner party is a bit dry at first, but the writing is so good that despite the subpar audio, the quality takes over and it‘s fully absorbing. I love that I finished it while driving through PNW mountains—it made the listen even more atmospheric.

bio_chem06 I have this book on hold at the library right now! I‘m so glad to see a good review because I was looking forward reading to it. Glad to know if I just power through the boring beginning, it will be alright. 2w

Ummmm…this one was rough! Not only is the subject matter unsettling but the audiobook narrator‘s lack of inflection or feeling in his voice was particularly disturbing and sometimes monotonous. I also really didn‘t like the ending either and there is a part dealing with puppies that I especially hated (which might sound weird given everything else going on). The overall theme though of the worth of humanity was intriguing. 🌟🌟🌟

This was a hard book to read. For me it was similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, which was also a difficult, brutal, and haunting read. I have to appreciate both the author and the translator for taking the means they did with the book and being specific about their wording and terms.

This is haunting, bleak, tense, disgusting, and disquieting but it's also well written, and an odd page turner. One more book off the TBR!

I love this book, but I forgot how bleak it is. Andrew, a British serial killer, fakes his own death and ends up in New Orleans, where he meets Jay, another serial killer. Together, they team up to find their next victim 🖤
Warnings: lots of them, and for those who have read Brite's books, then you mostly know what you're in for.

26/2025 Cannibalism. It brings up horrible images, Hannibal Lector and his fava beans, but humans and animals have a long history of cannibalism, for survival, for medicinal reasons, for rituals, for conquest, and sadly for pleasure in some. Fortunately, the author sticks to the scientific reasons, and isn't lured into the sensational aspect with serial killers like Jeffery Dahmer and Ed Gein.

Its a dystopian novel, for that note it does a good job of painting a bleak alternative society. It‘s descriptive of certain scenes which definitely impacted me. A non filtered book, with an ending that accompanies the bleakness of the setting itself.
