I read this book with my online book group, the theme being witches/wizards. It‘s an interesting story inspired by the Pendle Witch Trials. It‘s very well researched and written. I did find it a bit plodding, however, and it‘s full of misery! Too much hardship and suffering. I was very pleased to turn the last page. And I can‘t wait to start something more cheerful!

I‘m reading this with my online book group, https://thereadingloft.groups.io/g/main. The theme was ‘witches‘ so the chosen book is a story about the Pendle witches, https://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/The-Pendle-Witches/. My copy of this book must be about 10 years old. I couldn‘t find it on my bookshelves at first but fortunately it at last turned up! It had added itself to the wrong bookshelf for some reason.😊. Excuse for a tidy up anyway. 😄

This book specifically talks about (imp) trials in history where someone was accused of being a "witch", why they were accused, who accused them, and what was at stake. We get to see how accusers conflated this idea of being a "witch" with religious beliefs involving the devil, as a way to really people to their side (bc oh no, the devil).

But my fav part was the contemporary section. I think that part brought things into perspective #feminism

A new graphic novel added to a library in our consortium…sure I‘ll give it a try. The hold comes in and woah, no clue what this was about or the graphic (erotic!) content. This is a witch-burning, demon nightmare/crossover into real life full of sex, murder, sinning and judgement in 1600s England. I appreciated the use of two styles of illustrations, from the two creators. It really added dimension to the work.

This incredibly detailed and researched book describes how innocent people were victims of misguided religiosity, ignorance, bigotry, and misogyny. Even in modern times, powerful people use the fear of demonization and the unknown to exploit and control people. Today‘s social and political climate continues this persecution and the term "witch hunt" has been twisted by the rich and the powerful when their own actions are called into question.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐝𝐞 by 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐫 is richly atmospheric & terrifyingly realistic. Inspired by 17th century witch hunts, this searing historical fiction eerily parallels contemporary issues -- paranoia, misogyny, feminine power, gossip, mob mentality, & revenge. A complexly ambiguous mute woman questions her beliefs, struggling to save herself & other wrongfully accused women. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amidst the historic play-by-play, Roach takes the time to really focus on 6 specific women of the trials: How did they each come to be living in Salem, 1692 (indisputably a WRONG place & WRONG time)? What fears, hopes, misunderstandings could‘ve led innocent women to confess? What traumas & biases, left to fester, could have brought about such hysteria?

This book doesn‘t pretend to have all the answers. But it‘s important to ask the questions.

A fascinating look at 13 witchcraft trials throughout history. I was familiar with a number of the trials but that didn't affect my feelings about the book. It also brings home how little things have changed in terms of who is generally accused and why.
