Spitballing for any kindred spirits here.

Is anyone planning a book challenge based on activism, education, creating conversation? Maybe a list centered around “Banned Books”? A re-read of 1984 and/or The Hunger Games? If you know of one, point me to it. Or if you‘d like to start one with me, sound off.

I feel like we should use these emotions in a constructive way. ❤️‍🩹

Bookwormjillk I feel like someone was working on a banned book challenge. Let me see if I can find it. 3mo

Three years ago I saw this show Off-Broadway (and cried). I had always planned to see the Broadway upgrade but when I heard it‘s leaving in January, I knew I had to see it before voting this cycle. Keep Marching! The Young are at the Gates!

This was difficult to read because of the horrible acts described, but it is important to know this history.

TieDyeDude Wow, that sounds intense! 9mo

This book looks at an era in American history filled with requirements of loyalty, vicious anti-immigrant rhetoric, jailing (or attempting to jail) those with different political opinions, censorship of written materials certain people don‘t like and more. Sounds awfully familiar, doesn‘t it? But it‘s about the era starting in 1917. While my attention to this did wane in places, overall it‘s an interesting, topical book.

Leftcoastzen I‘m glad you reviewed it , one I wanted to check into but forgot to write it down , Palmer raids , right? 11mo
Hooked_on_books @Leftcoastzen That‘s part of it, yes. He paints a picture of that whole era. 11mo

Really interesting history of WWI and a few years afterward. There was a lot of new information for me- prison for those opposing the war, socialism, immigration, entering the war, diplomatic relations, etc. the author subtly connected today to 100 years ago in an interesting and thoughtful manner. Well written and provided lesser known, yet important, history of the US.

Went and saw this new musical at the Public (starring Phillippa Soo of Hamilton fame) — it was based upon the tagged memoir, following the American suffrage movement. Well-written and clever, pulls at your heartstrings & makes you laugh (and cry). I need to find a copy of Doris‘ book now….

Good: A well written overview of the four men and their 1912 presidential race.

Bad: Less depth than I had hoped for.

I liked the book but it somehow had less substance than I expected and so let me down. Would be good if you're looking for summary bios of the candidates and the presidential race of 1912.

Loved this book, but then I will read just about anything involving Alice Paul.

Well researched and there was "backstory" Even I didn't know about.
