Amazing story of a young woman and a tree. Julia Butterfly spent more than 700 days in Luna to save it from the logging industry. She peacefully fought big business and violent loggers at times. Over her time in Luna, she had visits from celebrities building publicity to the tree. Some of her colleagues in protest lost their lives, while Julia stayed in the tree as long as it took, until it was guaranteed it would not be cut.

Scochrane26 I‘ve had this book for many years but haven‘t reread in so long. Thought it had been forgotten! My roommate at the time read it for a class & told me to read it. I sometimes wonder if the tree is still standing & what she‘s doing now. (edited) 2mo
Cosmos_Moon @Scochrane26 I wondered when I was reading this so had to do some googling… she is still an activist and Luna is still there! She has not done another 2 year tree sit, though. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luna_(tree)#:~:text=Luna%20is.... (edited) 2mo
Scochrane26 @Cosmos_Moon Thanks for the info! 2mo

Yesterday‘s library #bookhaul - both MG graphic novels. It‘s been tough to find reading time lately, and after wading through Liz Cheney‘s book something easier to read seemed like a good idea.

Fantastic, hopeful read, especially for the current moment.

Engage in social justice as you are and cast aside the "Activist Ideal". You don't need to be the person chaining yourself to trees or attending the 500k+ person marches. So much work takes place in the background that has monumental effects on change. Powerful movements have come not from violent confrontation but rather, the quiet, persistent individuals who operate in peaceful determination, carefully tending our energy to prevent burnout.

This book is a biography about a girl named Judy Heumann. She has been such an inspiration to disability people all around the world. She fought most of her life to get her voice heard and advocate for those who were disabled and not able to go to school. She only felt included at a summer camp for the disability. She made connections and made herself known to the state and federal government about getting changes made for disability people.

“For me, hope is not a metaphor; it's a lived practice. I don't have hope, I do hope. Hope for me is grounded in the reality that wondrous things happen alongside and parallel to the terrible. Every single day.“

This book was just what I needed to read right now.

For the #URC prompt “an anti-fascist“ book and also my #DoubleSpin choice.

“All they were hearing was NO! NO! NO!“ This quote shows how Judith was being discriminated against.

I think that this is a really cool book. It has both young adult reading and young readers coming together and meshing with the pictures and with the information in the text. I recommend this book to students who are learning about activism.
