What is an alternative history? This is. The story of Topsy the elephant, the Radium Girls - they really did exist but in Bolander‘s book, they get the attention they truly deserve. No other way to put it, but I absolutely loved it from beginning to end. It is poetic & heartbreaking, it‘s an origin story a mythology & a beautifully thought provoking tale. The Many Mothers are all Mothers.

The Overstory: A Novel | Richard Powers

This is a book I‘ve been dying to get my hands on. KCRWs Michael Silverblatt had a brilliant on-air discussion with Mr Powers about his novel and cannot wait to dive into the complexities of our rediscovery of Mother Nature.

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover

That night, Dad dragged a pile of old army bags up from the basement. He said they were our "head for the hills" bags. We spent that night packing them with supplies - herbal medicines, water purifiers, flint and steel. Dad had bought a truckload of military MREs - Meals Ready-to-Eat - and we put as many as we could fit into our packs, imagining the moment when...hiding ourselves in the wild plum trees near the creek, we'd eat them.

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover

🎧 Heard the author, Tara Westover, talking about her memoir & was utterly fascinated. Downloaded her audiobook and gotta say: what a story. She &her siblings were raised “off the grid”. Survivalists. No school, no hospitals, no government issued SSN, etc. I think this is a story begging to be told. This line:
“I believed my family was part of this immortal pattern, that we were in some sense eternal. But eternity belonged only to the mountain.”

Ordered a copy of this book the second I learned of Ms. Braverman‘s epic Iditarod win. Complete amazement at the grit and determination she had to pull out of herself to get it done. Should be a fascinating read!

5/5 ⭐️ Loved this read so much. The true story of Rex; the incredible K9 we see in the film Megan Leavey. He had quite the beginning with his first handler, Mike Dowling, and their bond is so tangible, you can feel the love, trust and loyalty that gets them through each day; some days are actually very funny and made me laugh with surprise! It‘s war, and war is ugly, but you can‘t help but root for this team from the start. This story is golden.🐾

5/5⭐️!!!! OMGosh! LOVE this little book! Laughed my way straight to the end! Thought a quick couple pages would do but kept going and going until suddenly...finito! Adorable art on each page, paired with *exactly* what animals are saying, because THEY CAN TALK! So much fun! 🐶🐰🐱📖🐹🐼🐵

Had to drop it. Gorgeous language, but frustrating for some reason. Not the read I‘m needing right now...might try again a bit later. Maybe. We shall see!

literacassandrature Sometimes a story frustrates me too! Do you keep reading, hoping it will get better? Or put it aside? 6y
Book_Gobbler Ya know, it depends. Decided to jump ship on this because I‘m so darn backed up on everything else (reading included!), chose to move along with something else. This is sitting & waiting for another try/another day. Beautiful writing/language - so might return to it down the road. Maybe?! 📚📖🤗😊 6y

Dog Songs | Mary Oliver

5/5 ⭐️ Highly enjoyable. I love dogs. I love my rescue dog so much that it sometimes aches in the best of ways. Mary Oliver, one of the greatest American poets there was, loved her dogs, too. And I gotta tell you, the way she describes it here, the sweet simplicity of her love? It‘s truly amazing in the *best* of ways as well. Frowned upon by her peers for “simplistic writings”, but I tell you this: she didn‘t win a Pulitzer Prize for nothin‘.

“Each mad dash takes me a step closer to Rex. Six vehicles down I reach his. I peer over the open side. Through the mesh in his crate I see him seeing me. He fixes me with a lonely, frightened gaze, like he‘s convinced he‘s been abandoned: WHERE WERE YOU? WHAT THE HELL KEPT YOU? AND WHAT THE HELL‘S GOING ON OUT THERE?”

Cannot express my love for this book enough. It‘s an absolute necessity for the times we live in, and if you live in the waters near Washington State, where the Southern Resident Killer Whale (aka SKRWs) can be found at certain times of year, it should be required reading.

Pick this up. Now. Read it. Think about nature and what we‘ve done - and are doing - to these sentient, smart, extraordinary animals.
