This was such a big disappointment to me, because after all the hype I just couldn't get into it. 😒 It was a bit too rapey, and I couldn't get into the characters at all. It just wasn't for me!

#gratefulreads #thoughtyouwouldlikebutdidnt @OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

rachelm I felt the same 4w
SamAnne Yup. I don‘t know that I regretted reading it even though I did not find it “enjoyable” but I sure wouldn‘t recommend it to others and I don‘t plan to read future books in the trilogy. 4w
Carolhreads This book was huge dnf for me I couldn‘t finish it I took it out from the library thinking if it was good I would be able to fly through it but I hated it !!! The premise is interesting but poorly executed 4w

I saw this book at the bookshop today and was immediately drawn to it! The cover and the blurp are very intriguing. Has anyone here read it? I didn‘t buy it but I think I might the next time.

KendallHershey I added this to my to-read goodreads list back when it was first published for the same reason! Still haven‘t gotten a chance to read it, so keep us updated on if it‘s good. 1mo
ju.ca.no @KendallHershey I will! If my endless TBR allows me to get to it🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️😂😂😂 1mo
BookwormM I have read it I will say it wasn‘t for me it‘s very violent 1mo

ju.ca.no @BookwormM yes, I‘ve read a few reviews saying that... I think I will still give it a try, I hardly ever read violent books so I don‘t really know how I will react to that or how I will take it😅 1mo
Nute I‘m going to read it as well when I get a chance. I always want to know for myself no matter what the reviews are. A lot of violence in a book might be a negative for me too...idk. I do know that at this time of the year during the holiday season I like a little more joy and brightness so I won‘t be reading this any time soon. 1mo
ju.ca.no @Nute yes, good point! It doesn‘t sound like a holiday/winter book😅 1mo

Halfway through and I‘m not sure how I feel about this book. I was expecting more about African legends and not so much, well, disemboweling.

ImperfectCJ I was in a similar boat with this one. Since I read it a couple of weeks ago I've decided that I really like it, especially Tracker's evolution over the course of the novel, but it was a challenge to get through all of the blood. 1mo
BarbaraBB Great picture 💕 1mo

Tracker is telling to his Inquisitor the tale of his search for a boy, which ends up interwoven with the story of Tracker's life and love, his childhood and his coming of age and his compromises with loss. It's a bizarre story and so, so violent, but I'm glad I read to the end. I have no idea whom I'd feel comfortable recommending it to, though.

When the text description doesn't match the map. I suspect someone just didn't catch that one "Southwest" should have been a "Southeast." This kind of thing bugs me, but I wonder if it were my job to edit books if I would actually catch these mistakes or if I only see them because I have the luxury of reading at my own pace.

On a positive note, I think I'm finally getting my bearings in this novel. Only took 250+ pages...

This book is a challenge, both in style and in content. I'm 138 pages in. I'm going to give it my full attention during two hours of downtime this afternoon, but I'm really not sure I'm up for the violence.

I'm reading Steven Markley's Ohio at the same time; it's possible the combination is compounding the feeling of despair. I might need to add something light-hearted into the mix.

SamAnne I had the same experience with it. So mixed. I panned it because I didn‘t think I could recommend it to anyone. So violent. I‘m glad I read it but have no plans to read the other books planned in the trilogy. 2mo
ImperfectCJ @SamAnne I had no idea it was/is going to be part of a trilogy. It would have to change quite a bit for me to want to read more in a trilogy. Does the story eventually feel worth the violence? There are elements I appreciate, it's just so unpleasant. If it weren't a National Book Award finalist, I don't think I would be trying so hard. 2mo

This is an intense, violent, and dark novel; the kind of book with scenes that you‘d like to shield your eyes from even as you read. I will say, though, that the shimmers of hope and warmth shine brighter for it. I loved Tracker and the Leopard.

I‘m surprised by the number of critical reviews. I feel like Marlon James has invented a rich, dense universe with characters who struggle to make sense of brutal, unfeeling universe. Well worth my time.

Lovely day at the #brooklynbookfestival Took advantage of some small press sales, got to see Edwidge Danticat talk about tragedy & trauma in her work (and 2 new to me authors- David Chariandy & Maria Tumarkin) and ended up in the gorgeous church shown here to see Joyce Carol Oates and Marlon James in conversation about a range of topics relevant to their work. Sorry for the lack of corroborating author photos- you'll have to take my word for it 😉

Aimeesue Hope you could hear Oates - at the National Book Festival she was very soft spoken and mumbly. No one could tell what she was saying! Maybe she was just tired? it was at the end of the day. 3mo
Billypar @Aimeesue Ugh, that's the worst - you get a soft-spoken author with a low mic and it's very frustrating. Luckily there weren't problems hearing either one. 3mo

Dion Graham is a magnificent narrator he brings such life and passion to this story, giving every chracter their owm unquie voice. Which is impressive because there are like... 20 chracters in this book.. Wild what a treat. Highly recomended you listen to the audiobook.

FIrst 100 pages were very hard to get through, thought about putting the book down. His writing style is different and the grammar that alot of the characters use takes getting use to. The Middle of the book was great. Very engaging , great character development. At times I didn't know what was going on and lost track of even what characters where in the room. Worth reading but it's not for everyone for sure.

So I managed to read this entire thing—all 600+ pages. It was fine. I don‘t love fantasy, and this book is full of witches, shape shifters, trolls, etc. You find out some things, there is lots of violence, and it all sort of circles back around to the beginning. Just not my thing. #camptob #tournamentofbooks #fantasy

This book isn't one you can, or should, read quickly. It has to marinate in your mind as you slowly build up a tolerance to it, all the while questioning whether you can even stomach it or figure out what the hell is going on. With a non-linear, nested narration, you'll be frustrated until you realize how genius it all is when it starts making sense. The worldbuilding is unparalleled, and the story, setting, and characters are all unique. Badass.

I totally envisioned a buff Marlon James as the main character Tracker. I think fantasy fans tired of the Eurocentric faux-medieval sub-genre will probably appreciate the African setting and folklore. As for the sex and violence, I didn‘t think it worse than GoT. But as lit fic I don‘t think it quite hits the mark. Too much posturing. James sure does love his fight scenes...a little too much.

I wanted to like this more than I actually did. First of all, stop saying it‘s like Game of Thrones just because it‘s fantasy. The plot was meandering and frustrating, with tangents that often went nowhere, and the use of interrogation as a framing device likewise never panned out. I liked the African mythology and how openly queer it was, but ultimately that was not enough to save this one for me.

jchawkins I'm totally with you on the "stop saying GOT just because it's fantasy" sentiment. The other one that gets me is when people won't even pick up a fantasy book because it ISNT like GOT...? 5mo

Ahhhh that‘s 9 days of good reading time I will never get back. I should have bailed but a slogged it out so I could have this opinion.
This is such a mess, a story that meanders and dodges, monsters that just appear with little sense of tension. I am not even touching on the oft mentioned violence - it exudes a smug air of if you can‘t handle it then your not cool enough for Marlon James. I would say “kill your darlings” James.

Ruthiella @Rachel_nyc Ah library holds! Sometimes they give and sometimes they giveth not!🤪 I got lucky though I did buy American Spy. But I think it‘s good to throw a debut author some cash. 6mo
merelybookish I have not been very good about reading these. Trust Exercise is the only one I want to read and Ive already read Lost Children Archive. I figure I'll read the winner. 6mo
Megabooks I tried to read Trust Exercise and didn‘t like it. I read Daisy when it came out. Definitely not worth all the praise it‘s getting. So far, a bust. ☹️ 6mo
Suet624 I bailed on Bowlaway and read Daisy Jones. Hoping to get Lost Children soon from the library. 6mo
Redwritinghood So far I‘ve only read Trust Exercise and Lost Children Archives, which was brilliant. I‘ve started but not finished Bowlaway and Black Leopard. 6mo
Ruthiella @merelybookish I totally skipped the summer TOB last year. Your strategy is a good one. So many books so little time!😀 6mo
Ruthiella @Suet624 Bowlaway was a little too quirky for me personally. I hope you like Lost Children. It‘s a book that gave me a lot of food for thought. 6mo
Ruthiella @Redwritinghood So you‘ve read the winner then 🤣 I predict Luiselli now. Black Leopard isn‘t really my cup of tea, though it is growing on me some. 6mo
BarbaraBB I can‘t find the time this year, though I normally love the Summer ToB. I read only Daisy, which gets way too much praise. I have Lost Children on my shelves and am interested in American Spy and Bowlaway. What made me decide to skip this summer, is that I should have to read Black Leopard. I really don‘t want to. I will read the winner in September though! 6mo
BkClubCare Ach! American Spy and Lost Children came same day from library and I am only a few pages into the latter - probably won‘t finish before due. And I have just been notified that Trust Exercise is ready for pickup. I can‘t read that fast and might have to skip all three. 😥 6mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I love the TOB in general because when I participate it makes me read current books. But it is a reading commitment for sure! LOL I didn‘t love Daisy either... I wish I could have tried the audio but the wait list was too long! 6mo
Ruthiella @BkClubCare I hate it when holds all come in like a rush like that! Of the three you mentioned only American Spy can be read “quickly “ IMO. It‘s plot heavy. 6mo
BarbaraBB I‘ll follow your thoughts on the Tournament and am looking forward to your review of this one! (edited) 6mo
Ruthiella @Megabooks I also thought Daisy was just OK though I get why others loved it. Too bad about Trust Exercise. I enjoyed it but I had to read the second part to reach that enjoyment. 6mo
thebluestocking You‘re a machine!! 💙 I‘ve only read Daisy and then have only been able to get my hands on Bowlaway. I‘m following along with the weekly commentary though. And I‘ll definitely read the winner, of course. 6mo
Ruthiella @thebluestocking The temptation was just too great not to read them all! 😀 6mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - Ok, good to know. I have to July 9 but my parents are visiting 😜 6mo

An epic fantasy told in a frame story about a man tasked with finding a missing boy along with witches, shapeshifters, and old friends and enemies. Meandering a bit in a way that reminds me of Name of the Wind. Definitely not an easy undertaking because it is certainly an *epic* fantasy. Hard to follow at times and sometimes a bit rambly. I enjoyed it but didn't love it.

My boyfriend reading "Black Leopard, Red Wolf". He says it's like nothing he's ever read and really enjoys it so far. Can't wait to read it myself.

Couldn't finish it. Great characters and writing but the story wasn't going anywhere. I stopped caring about half way through, shame.
