The Mouse and the Motorcycle
The Mouse and the Motorcycle | Beverly Cleary
37 posts | 146 read | 8 to read
"Boy!" said Ralph to himself, his whiskers quivering with excitement. "Boy, oh boy!" Feeling that this was an important moment in his life, he took hold of the handgrips. They felt good and solid beneath his paws. Yes, this motorcycle was a good machine all right.Ralph the mouse ventures out from behind the piney knothole in the wall of his hotel-room home, scrambles up the telephone wire to the end table, and climbs aboard the toy motorcycle left there by a young guest. His thrill ride does not last long. The ringing telephone startles Ralph, and he and the motorcycle take a terrible fall - right to the bottom of a metal wastebasket. Luckily, Keith, the owner of the motorcycle, returns to find his toy. Keith rescues Ralph and teaches him how to ride the bike. Thus begins a great friendship and many awesome adventures. Once a mouse can ride a motorcyle ... almost anything can happen!

1. Yes! I love a manual transmission and wish I could still get one in the US. We rented a car in Madrid one time, and they gave us a huge upgrade when we said we could drive a manual transmission. They were so relieved that we didn't need an automatic after all the Americans in line before us. One of the reasons I want to live in Europe, at least for a few years.

Thanks for the tag @The_Penniless_Author !

ImperfectCJ Well, my reasons for wanting to live in Europe are different (and growing as 2024 wears on), but the manual transmissions are a significant bonus to the idea. 2mo
Amiable I'm with you! My husband and I want to live in Europe for several reasons -- including 2024! 😬 We also both know how to drive a stick so that isn't a problem. 2mo

I decided to read this today as my #inmemoriam pick for #booked2023. Beverly Cleary was one of my favorites as a kid, but I‘d never read the Ralph books! Loved the letter at the beginning written by Kate DiCamillo. Beverly Cleary was such a gem 💚💚

TheBookHippie Now you have to watch the original movie ♥️ (1986) 11mo
CBee @TheBookHippie oh my gosh, there‘s a movie?? I definitely need to find that. Thank you! 💚💚💚 11mo
TheBookHippie @CBee should be on Amazon yet I think it‘s a dollar 🤣 11mo

It was mostly my mom who fostered my loved of reading as a kid with frequent trips to the library & book orders through school. But there were a few other family members, now passed away, who were also bookworms. My maternal grandmother Patricia LOVED mysteries & Stephen King. I remember she was esp. fond of Sue Grafton. When I was growing up I would frequently visit my maternal great grandfather Louis' house. Alongside vivid memories (cont)

vivastory of many summer days in the community pool down the street & a lot of days on the lake as he went fishing, there was a lot of reading. I would often stay up late in the guest bedroom. I remember that Beverly Cleary was a fave at the time, esp Mouse & the Motorcycle. Louis, a survivor of the great depression, would have a can of #soup for lunch most days that he didn't have guests. Soup & dime-store Western novels kept him going.

What a cute story about the power of believing! I'm so sorry I never read this as a kid but I think I was more Team Judy Blume & turned my nose up at Beverly Cleary. Really fun way to start my year! #Top100KidLit

A lovely, easy chapter book to read with Beatrix. Most of the time she will elect Luke as her nighttime reader so I try to keep the books we read quite short and simple - it can be a long time between sessions. This fit the bill nicely, although I personally prefer the realism of Ramona. The magical elements of a talking mouse riding a motorcycle around a hotel appealed to Trix.

Among my earliest memories of my reading life, are many involving Beverly Cleary. She was one of the first authors I recall staying up past my bedtime to read, ignoring my family members in favor of rereading a favorite & eagerly seeking out the books I didn't own at the library. For someone not related to me, she was one of the most important early influences in my life. 💙🐀🏍️

Kristin_Reads The Mouse and the Motorcycle was one of my favorites 💗 3y
Hooked_on_books Her books were my childhood. I related to Ramona so much! I‘m sad she‘s gone but so glad she put her stories into the world for us all to grow up on. 3y
LeahBergen Yes, I can remember repeatedly signing Ribsy out from my elementary school library. 😢 3y

In a world where a mouse can jump on a toy motorcycle and make a “vroom, vroom” sound to magically start moving, pretty much anything is possible... but a mouse riding a motorcycle is pretty fantastic all on its own. On Episode 129 of my podcast, we discuss The Mouse and the Motorcycle! We compare/contrast Ralph S. Mouse and Stuart Little, chat about what the book has to say about class and trauma, and more! 🐭🛵 Link to listen in my bio.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever found a Beverly Cleary book that I didn‘t like, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle was another wonderful story. It‘s probably because of this book that I fell in love with Mrs Frisby and the Rays if NIMH. I hope I get to read this with my nephews when they‘re older!

Cosmos_Moon Omg! I forgot about this book! I loved this one as a kid! So cute ☺️ is the mouse‘s name Ralph? 3y

Just as enjoyable as when I was a kid. This story is super adorable and very sweet. It is a great introduction to chapter books for young readers as it is relatively short and reads very fast with lots of action in each chapter.

This was one of my childhood favorites so I couldn't resist this purchase. It will still be a few years before the grandbaby will be ready for it but I'm excited at the prospect of introducing it to him eventually. 😊🛵

Unable to climb the sides, he had been trapped until the maid came and emptied him out with the trash. No one knew for sure what had happened to Uncle Victor, but it was known that the trash in the hotel was emptied into an incinerator.”

Classic early chapter book. Mouse and boy become friends at hotel. Ralph the mouse 🐭 has insightful perspective on a child's frustrations. My son definitely empathized with Ralph and his point of view. Ralph S. Mouse is up next. This was a great read aloud for my 4 turning 5 son. #earlychapterbook #readaloud
