Cosy, murderous fun! It did tie up very conveniently, but I enjoyed my read so much I didn‘t really mind.

This is a beautiful debut novel about friendship and love, that very first obsessive ‘best friend‘ love - Kate and Harriet are growing up on an isolated Australian cape in 1880s. They‘re right on the cusp of adulthood when McPhail arrives in their small community. We see through Kate‘s eyes the growing attraction between Harriet & McPhail. I think the author captured that atmosphere of friendship so well.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, full of Irish myths of fairies, changelings and superstition. Kent weaves descriptions of the landscape and daily lives of her characters without being too descriptive (perfect for those that don‘t enjoy that). Superstition played such a big role in daily lives, it‘s hard to compare Nora‘s situation to what would happen now. I think this would be a good book club read. I‘m looking forward to reading Burial Rites.
It's #bannedbooksweek and this was my first book for my virtual readouts. It has been challenged/banned a number of times. It's not an easy book, but it's well worth the read.
This was the perfect atmospheric winter read. I love that this started out as us vs the trees, but it was just as much about the damage we can do to each other. Shaw has a wonderful way with words. His characters are flawed, but it makes them all the more interesting.
Still not 100% sure about this. It's a slow read that takes its time to get going & even then it doesn't go far. Character driven, I still agree with my comment of "I've almost finished this & I don't understand Evie any better. Equal parts perfect/annoying." 5 months later that still stands.
This was a cover to cover read, it got me right from the start (it's BKV so I'm not surprised 😍) Fun dialogue, I'm enjoying the characters. Beautiful artwork with fitting 80s colour palette. I loved this supernatural ride back to my youth, the worst I had to deal with was an ankle attacking poodle!
Just started this, "it's about nostalgia, first jobs and the last days of childhood." I like it.
"The skies they were ashen and sober."
It's been raining on/off the whole weekend so I decided to take advantage of the atmosphere and indulge in a little Poe.
I'm only 5 chapters in but I'm loving the atmosphere of The Trees so far.
This is all sorts of depressing, hopeful, lovely, wondrous and I'm so glad I finally read it. Can't recommend it enough.
Despite its predictability I was swept away by this story. I wasn't interested so much by the Loch Ness Monster storyline but by the small village and the characters there.
