This is a historical fiction book about a Japanese internment camp during World War II. The boy's father decided to build a baseball field to help lift the spirits of those in the camp. They have teams and they play against each other and it helps them forget for at least a little bit where they are. This resource gives more information on life in the interment camps http://amhistory.si.edu/ourstory/activities/internment/ #ucflae3414sp17

AnastasiaH This is such a powerful story, it's so important for students to learn about these times in our history. A great way to incorporate social studies! 8y
DrSpalding You used the Smithsonian Institute's resource. Very impressive. Everyone take note of this high-quality resource. 8y

Mr Wuffles! | David Wiesner

Mehso-so

Mr. Wuffles is a science fiction book about a cat who is picky about his toys but finds one he likes, except it turns out its a space ship with aliens. There very few words in this book so it could be used for inferencing. Students will have to infer what they think happened in the story by looking at the pictures and using the few words. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Mr-Wuffles-A-Book-Study-1271278 #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding This author is known for his excellent wordless picture books as well. Check out Tuesday and Flotsam. 8y
LaurenMcl I picked up this book at the orange county library a while back because it remindeed me of a childhood cat. I like how you included that it is great for making inferences. 8y

Leo Lionni does it again with this animal fantasy book about an inch worm who claims he is useful so he doesn't get eaten. The inch worm then measure things in the story. He encounters a nightingale who tells him to measure his song or he will eat him, the inch worm then inches away while the nightingale sings. This lesson plan is great to go along with the story http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/30039 #ucflae3414sp17

BrielleR I love your resource!!! Leo Leonni is becoming one of my favorite authors ❤️ 8y
DrSpalding Make inchworms with the kids and measure items in the classroom! 8y
HayleeM @DrSpalding I thought about using gummy worms! 8y

It's a circle story that ends up where it started, the mouse asking for a brownie. This is the book I chose for my storytelling and it is a fun story to tell! Two Bobbies is a nonfiction book about two friends and their survival after Hurricane Katrina. This is my read aloud choice. The story is very engaging to me because I love animals, I cried during the book. Bobbi and Bob Cat stick together, they never leave the others side. It turns out that Bob Cat is blind and that is why Bobbi is so protective of her https://www.learningtogive.org/resources/two-bobbies-literature-guide #ucflae3414sp17

HeyMsBowen I love this book! I read it in a Kindergarten room last week! :) 8y

Owl Moon is a poem about a father taking his daughter owling in the woods. Finally at the end, they come face to face with a beautiful owl. This book is a Caldecott Award winner. As I was reading this book, I was mesmerized by the illustrations as well as the words. It is very soothing and relaxing. This book would be perfect to be read in Chris Pombonyo's Winter Wonderland classroom! http://janeyolen.com/works/owl-moon/ #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding I agree! I had a former student storytell it and it was awesome! Yolen is a stellar author! 8y
krystag My teacher once read this book to my class and I remember the illustrations being amazing! I have to reread it, but I feel that this book can be a great way to introduce our students to poetry at a young age in an illustrated way! 8y

The old lady swallowed a fly then swallowed a spider to catch the fly and it goes on and on until she swallowed a horse, then dies. The illustrations in this book are very engaging and would be great for a read aloud for young students https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/there-was-old-... #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding Great resource! Classic TRADITIONAL LITERATURE! 8y
Alisoncavicchi I remember this book from when we were in elementary school! There's a nursery rhyme on YouTube that I think would be really useful to show for beginning learners. It gets them up and moving too! https://youtu.be/V6Mzqxxio_w 8y
krystag I use to love this story when I was younger! Like Alison commented, I've seen the YouTube video as well used before and it would be a great resource to use. The link you provided is great! Scholastic offers a lot of greats lessons to follow for different books and I really liked the ones they offered about repetition of the text for gaining fluency! 8y
