YES. THIS BOOK. I believe I read this in 6th grade. Philip (a young white male) becomes stranded on an island and has to learn to co-inhabit with an older man, Timothy, who is black. Philip struggles with prejudices as he and Timothy learn to survive. (Realistic Fiction) #ucflae3414sp17 http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/ribbean-island-st...

DrSpalding Sounds interesting. Might it have text to text connections with Paulson's, Hatchet? 8y
Maya.A This sounds like a great book to read during black history month. It can show students that we are equal and that we need to help and support others. 8y
Langlied I have never heard of this book but it sounds really interesting and worth reading! It would be a great lesson to teach students too! 8y
LaurenMcl I have seen this book before and never thought of reading it. Adding it to my list! 8y

I reread this book over break and remembered why I loved it so much. In Jonas's life, there's a perfect idea of a society. As the book progresses, his view on society changes drastically. I don't want to spoil it for you! This is definitely a read for older students, usually sixth grade. A text that involves some critical thinking! (SCI FI) #ucflae3414sp17 https://www.walden.com/blog/the-giver-7-creative-classroom-activities/

DrSpalding Nicole, reconsider the genre. This dystopian society is unlike any in the real world. There will be a special performance of The Giver at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando in mid April. 8y
RanaH Great resource! I remember reading this book in school! Such a great book! 8y
Maya.A This book sounds great! We can even compare and contrast the society in the book with our society. 8y
SimaraGauntlett I recently watched the movie on Netflix and I thought it was great, I will definitely be reading the book next! 8y

This is the FIRST, original book in the series! Everybody gets first day of school jitters, and Junie B. Jones is no different. She gets her start on the first day of Kindergarten, but when it's time to leave, she doesn't get back on the bus! Does she make it home?! This easy fiction read will help you find out! #ucflae3414sp17 https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/m/?s=junie-b-jones.html 📚

Slacorbiniere This would be such a good book to introduce on the first day of classes! I'm interested in reading it, loved your description 8y
DrSpalding I read this series to my first graders. While Junie B. Jones is a precocious child, she provides many real world discussions about how to handle situations and how to behave. 8y
ericai i love all the junie b jones books! i think this book would be a great for students nervous about starting school. i like that your source had questions to test that the student understands what they are reading 8y

SimaraGauntlett Junior B. Jones was my favorite book series growing up!! Her character is hilarious and children would stay engaged and interested. 8y

Again, I'm super biased because I LOVE dragons and dinosaurs, but this book ROCKS! It's SO popular with kids and I found a plethora of resources. Dragons Love Tacos tells the story of a hungry dragon and his love for tacos.. Small tacos, large tacos, ALL tacos! ❤ It's Taco Party Time for your classroom!! (animal fantasy) #ucflae3414sp17 http://teachingmama.org/dragons-love-tacos-book-activities/ #itsalmosttacotuesdayright ?

DrSpalding Believe it or not, this book spent over a year on the New York Times best seller's list. Check it out. Notice which book at the time was number one. https://www.nytimes.com/books/best-sellers/2015/04/12/picture-books/?_r=0 8y

This spin on the tale of Sleeping Beauty puts Maleficent as the main character. 👍🏻 I love this because it gives insight to the villain, whom kids never really focus on when reading. It's always about the hero. Check out Angelina Jolie in the major motion picture! Also check out artwork I've attached. :) Fantasy. #Ucflae3414sp17 http://conceptartworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/The_Curse_of_Maleficent_Th...

DrSpalding Kids love these fantasy characters. Maleficent of course the pics evil however the universal truths of good versus evil are present in books and worthy of discussion. 8y

Max and Ruby are some of my all-time faves!! :) This animal fantasy book invites you into the kitchen with Max and Ruby while they attempt to make their own personal "Bunny Cakes." It also teaches students about baking and using ingredients. I love it!! ? #ucflae3414sp17 https://www.teachervision.com/classroom-friendly-recipes/bunny-cakes-recipe-acti...

DrSpalding This book was the read for the record book 2 years ago. Young children thoroughly enjoy this and it is a wonderful book to include in a kindergarten classroom regarding cooking, recipes, science, math, and real world skills. 8y

THIS BOOK ROCKS! ❤❤ I'm super biased because squirrels are my favorite animal, but I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this. This book places squirrels in unusual situations, AND there's even a sequel! You'll love Mr. Peanuts and his daily routine!!! It's a silly, animal fantasy book. #ucflae3414sp17 http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20706309-the-secret-life-of-squirrels

DrSpalding You must then read Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watts! 8y
SimaraGauntlett Although I don't share your love of squirrels, I think this would be an entertaining read for children! 8y

With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, this book is an awesome resource for a read-aloud. The book takes you on an adventure of finally catching this frisky leprechaun! :) I've attached a link for teachers to use to help kids create their own leprechaun catchers. Folklore genre. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/teacher-tip-leprec... #Ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding A perfect book for St. Patrick's Day! Many schools perform leprechaun hunts with student made traps, pots of gold and all. 8y
ericai i love the source you added for the students to make their own leprechaun! that is a great way to get their creativity going! 8y

A little bit late, but who doesn't love a fun Valentine's Day book?! (or Valentime's, as Junie calls it). In this addition to the collection, Junie has a secret admirer, and spends the whole school day trying to figure it out. She thinks she might know, but you'll have to read to find out! ❤ This fiction chapter book brings tons of love and excitement. http://www.randomhousekids.com/brand/junie-b-jones/printables/?page=2&views=9 UCFLAE3414sp17

Mlegg I LOVED these books a kid and I would sit down and read the whole thing at once. Such a great way to get children into reading and the activities you provided will assist with that even more! 8y
DrSpalding Agreed! A super series to read aloud or use for LCs in grades 1 or 2! 8y

This picture book won the Caldecott award! Marjorie Priceman does an amazing illustration of the components of an orchestra and a diverse group of instruments. Along the way, children learn vocabulary from solo, all the way up to chamber. I was impressed by the illustrations! I also found a SUPER fun music lesson I'd love to use in my classroom. :) #UCFLAE3414sp17 http://makingmusicfun.net/htm/f_mmf_music_library/zin_zin_zin_instrument_id.htm

In the sixth grade, all Beth can think about is Phillip Hall, an athletic, hard working boy who won't give her the time of day! Over the course of the book, Beth starts to develop a close friendship with Phillip, who works on a farm and plays guitar. This was an awesome coming of age fiction book! Beth was a quirky little girl with a fiery spirit. :) http://edhelper.com/books/Philip_Hall_Likes_Me_I_Reckon_Maybe.htm #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding What kind of fiction @NicoleBowenTeach ? 8y
HeyMsBowen I think it's realistic fiction! The story includes much of what we've seen in society. :) (School, farms, homework, chores) 8y

This is one of my favorite children's fiction books! Being a music ed major, this book provides tons of opportunities to incorporate instruments into the story. I've done a lesson where kids play drums and shakers on certain parts of the book. Even read aloud as a story, it's great for Halloween! I found a link for the script where a teacher did readers theatre. ❤ http://www.timelessteacherstuff.com/readerstheater/LittleOldLady.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This is a great book. In the fall I normally model an interactive read aloud. Your resource is another wonderful extension. 8y
AlanaA I love your idea of incorporating music into a read aloud activity! Just another way to keep kids engaged (: 8y
Maya.A Allowing the students to play instruments is a great way to get them involved in the story! This is a great way to open students up to their fears. 8y

So far we're reading this in Literature Circles and it's SO intense!! Stella is a little girl growing up in a neighborhood where the population is threatened by the KKK. We read about her struggles and triumphs through this time. :) #ucflae3414sp17

AlanaA I love that you mention how intense it is. I'm sure it would really get the attention of students as well. I'm looking forward to learning more about it from you! #UCFLAE3414sp17 (edited) 8y
DrSpalding It is an intense book as is ECHO which is being read by another group. Both are HF and reveal the sadness of some historical events. These stories help children better understand what happened from childrens' perspective. 8y
Maya.A This is a great book! I think this is a great way to expose students to history as well as a great reads. This would be a great book to read in small groups! 8y
