I loved creating my author study on Laura Numeroff and took the chance to reread one of my favorites by her! This is a super cute Animal Fantasy circle story, meaning that it begins and ends in the same place! Children can learn about cause and effect through these books as well as story sequencing! #UCFLAE3414sp17 Lesson Plan: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/integrating-langu...

SarahF Your Glog/author study was awesome and brought back so many fond memories of reading the "If you give a..." books! I see this boos specifically in a lot of classrooms with a little mouse stuffy with it! Great post ??? 8y
AlanaA I love your resource and that you mentioned it was a circle story. What a great way to introduce how fiction can be written 8y
Mlegg I had no idea there were so many of these books! They are so much fun for kids. I love that the mouse stays the same throughout all the books. 8y
CharlotteG This book is so cute. I also loved if you give a Moose a Muffin, growing up. It was one of my brother and my favorites. 8y

Actual Size is a beautiful NF book that almost any child will enjoy! I loved the visuals in this book and the illustration style as this was the main focus of the book. Kids will love the pull-outs! This book is a great read to incorporate into math class as students can learn about measurement! Lesson Plan: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/bridging-literatu... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Excellent book! Excellent source! 8y
KaylaC I am doing this book for my teachlive! It was so interesting and very fun to read. I am very happy to see that you are reading it too! My favorite part of the book is that the drawings of the animals are the ACTUAL size of them in real life!! 8y

This cute Animal F tells the story of a mouse who worries about everything! From big to small and everything in between, Wemberly worries! Kids of all ages can read this book as it has simple text and cute illustrations. This book is a fun short read that I would read on the first day of school when students are most nervous about the school year!
Lesson Plan: http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/55494 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This is a special book that shares a common human issue; worrying! A great read aloud for the beginning of a school year! 8y
KaylaC This is honestly the book for me 😂 I worry about everything from big to small as well! I definitely have to read this book now because it seems like I could relate to this cute mouse on so many levels! 8y

As a West African Tale, this story tells about the chain of events that happen after a mosquito tells an iguana a "big lie". This tale is cute and opens opportunities for children to draw inferences as well as learn about cause and effect. I would use this story in the classroom to expose my students to more culturally diverse TL. Resource: https://www.teachervision.com/lesson/making-inferences-why-mosquitoes-buzz-peopl... #UCFLAE3414sp17

krystag Also! It's a Caldecott award winner! 8y
DrSpalding This is classic folklore at its best. Of course a wonderful read to assist students with the order and retelling of the story. 8y

""I wasn't talking," said Ruby. "I was praying. I was praying for them."" This B is about the life of Ruby Bridges, one of the first African American girls to attend a white school. A great book to aid in a lesson about segregation and a great read for Black History Month. Teacher Resources: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collections/teaching-content/ruby-bridges-si... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding I enjoy this biography. Just this week, at Red Bug elementary, I saw children's writing samples as if they were writing a letter to Ruby about how brave she was during this experience. 8y

Amelia Bedelia | Peggy Parish

This was my FAVORITE book when I was little. I used to carry this book around and read it till the spine started to fall apart! This RF book is a humorous story about a woman who takes a list of chores a bit too literally on her first day of work, but luckily her famous lemon-meringue pie saves the day! Lesson Plan: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/amelia-bedelia-cl... #UCFLAE3414sp17

Mlegg SUCH MEMORIES! I always loved this book as a kid and I'm sure it is still widely appreciated to this day. Such a fun story to share to a class. 8y
DrSpalding This is a fun series to read aloud in K-1, too! 8y

New Shoes for Silvia | Johanna Hurwitz

"Silvia's shoes were as red as the setting sun. They were as red as a watermelon. They were as red as a rose. The buckles shone in the sun like silver. And best of all, the shoes were just the right size for Silvia." Teaching Guide for this NF read: http://www-tc.pbskids.org/lions/parentsteachers/pdf/RABC1-NewShoesforSilvia.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding So many similes! This book may be an excellent book to spur a text innovation. 8y
SarahF Wow! This is in my to read pile!! This post has gotten me very excited to read it! 8y

This animal fantasy is a great option for younger kids to find joy in starting to read longer texts. As a fun, crazy, and easy to follow story for students to find a quick read or build their reading skills when approaching chapter books, I can see why this is a popular book among students in today's classrooms! Teaching Guides for this book and other Mercy Watson books: http://www.candlewick.com/book_files/0763636444.btg.1.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Yes! Candlewick is a super publisher with great resources! What kind of fiction? 8y

I really enjoyed this animal fantasy book! This book tells about a Siamese cat who think he is a Chihuahua and his adventures in a dog circus! I LOVED that it incorporated Spanish within the text, making it a learning opportunity for kids and a familiar language for our Spanish speakers! The official website for this character provides multiple resources for teachers: http://www.skippyjonjones.com/teachers.php #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding An excellent example of animal fantasy! Children love Skippy Jon Jones! 8y
AlanaA I love this book! I've always wanted to learn how to talk in a Spanish accent so I can read it to kids in a fun voice like my teacher used to do for me (: 8y

As a F book that was read to me and in turn I read to my own siblings, this books brings back memories of my childhood during my elementary years. Using this fun story as a resource, my kindergarten teacher used this book for a rememberable lesson about the life cycle of a butterfly involving real caterpillars! Sequencing Lesson Plan: https://www.teachervision.com/lesson/sequencing-lesson-plan-very-hungry-caterpil... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This F book is a classic! I too had caterpillars 🐛 in my classroom! It's a great book to integrate science and language arts! 8y
AlanaA I love this book! One of my favorites as a child and it still holds true. I like you're idea of incorporating science into the reading lesson. 8y

The Cat in the Hat | Dr. Seuss

Pickpick

As a fantasy classic, everyone knows the famous cat in his trademark stripped hat. The Cat in the Hat is a wonderful book to teach rhyme to young children and introduce them to Dr. Suess. Older students can feel nostalgic as this book can also teach students about Id, Ego, and Superego characters in a familiar setting: http://www.readwritethink.org/resources/resource-print.html?id=800&tab=4
#UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Remember to identify the genre. Nice job using RWT. Try to hyperlink the sources. 📚 8y
DrSpalding I ❤️that you selected a bilingual copy! 8y
Alisoncavicchi This would be a great copy to provide to an EL while reading the story aloud! They could see the translation and make the connection between the two languages to hopefully enhance their understanding of the text in English 8y
HayleeM I love The Cat in the Hat! Having the stuffed cat will help them visualize the character better. Also having a bilingual copy is fantastic for ESOL students so they can follow along and be engaged and love the story just like everyone else. 8y

Doctor De Soto | William Steig

As a Newbery Honor winner, this fable is about a mouse dentist that treats animals of all sizes! However, he does not treat animals dangerous to mice, until a fox shows up at his door one day and he takes a chance. This is a great book to teach fables and problem solving while keeping it fun for young children in a cute and funny story. Discussion Guide for K-4: http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32413
#UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Scholastic is a quality resource and the BDA reading recommendations are effective. Steig is also responsible for the character we know as SHREK!🙂 8y
HayleeM I love the resource you gave. Asking students those questions will help them make connections to the book and be engaged during the reading. Problem solving is very important at their age because they need to be able to solve a problem without getting upset. 8y
