Those who know me are often surprised when I tell them I haven't read Mary Poppins, since the story is such a big part of my life. My knowledge comes exclusively from the Disney film, so I decided it was time to give it a go. Unfortunately, as soon as the titular character arrived, I was immediately put off. She keeps sniffing, and she is very stern with the children and their mother. I couldn't keep Julie Andrews's portrayal of her out of my mind

AnastasiaH I'm sad to say that it was very hard to get into the story when I already have an idea of how it should be. 8y
DrSpalding I am sorry it didn't live up to your expectations but this happens @anastasiah What are you reading now? 8y
AnastasiaH @DrSpalding now I'm reading a Walt Disney biography! 8y

The Library Card | Jerry Spinelli
post image

"You collecting tickets?" is probably my favorite sentence in this book, the Library Card (RF) by Jerry Spinelli. After reading Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan, I was reminded of this story. 4 different children have their lives changed by a library card and the power of reading. Here are some discussion questions for students as they read: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/library-card-d...

DrSpalding This is a beautiful version of the story. Reading an original Cinderella story and then this one makes for a great compare and contrast lesson. This is a must read during a Native American social studies unit. 8y
