The Funny Baby | Margaret Hillert
post image

My 1st grader's amazing teacher recommended books by Margaret Hillert to help with building up fluency and motivation. Both my K and 1 are in love with this book and "Tom Thumb". Picked them up at UCF's CMC and I see the Orange County Library system has a great collection. I will be there in the morning! Great for sight word practice, motivation and fluency.

DrSpalding Wonderful! Thank you for sharing. 6y

The Lightning Thief | Rick Riordan

One resolution for the new year is reading every book my kids read along with them. My son's first choice for the new year. He is way ahead of me so far.

DrSpalding You can do it @LaurenMcl ❤️📚 6y
LaurenMcl @DrSpalding I can! My son is REALLY enjoying it. The first chapter had his attention immediately and now I have to check at night to see if he is under the covers reading. So proud of him! He has been branching out a lot lately from his usual non fiction choices (whuch of course are always great) and is enjoying a wider variety of literature. The power of GOOD books! 6y
DrSpalding You know I love to hear this. If we match up our students with books they actually enjoy, we can truly enlighten them to the power of a good book. 6y

This was in the stack at the Dr's office so I read it to my youngest two while waiting. Sometimes The selection can be hit or miss, but you can tell someone donated some GREAT books recently! This book was perfect for that PreK and beginning readers because of the repetitive words, opposites, and excellent illustrations to help provide contest clues. Dr. Seuss is always a great choice to read! #ucflae3414sp17 #Seuss

DrSpalding You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss @LaurenMcl Keep reading and posting! 7y

National Geographic's Weather, along with all their other readers are quality books and are must haves! This is also a great way for students to understand and learn key features of informational text as this book has a table of contents, glossary and so on. Check out their selection https://mshop.nationalgeographic.com/category/national-geographic-readers-series... #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding You do not get any better than National Geographic for nonfiction. I like that you mention the nonfiction text features that students must know in order to proficiently read and comprehend nonfiction. 7y

What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? | Steve Jenkins, Robin Page
post image

This book was another interesting nonfiction read by Steve Jenkins that explores animals. It is fun having students guess the animals based on the features given and it is harder than it looks on some pages! Visit Steve Jenkins website for more about him and his other books. http://www.stevejenkinsbooks.com/

The Little House | Virginia Lee Burton
post image

This is a book that I own a very used copy of. This little house has seen it all. I went from sitting in the beautiful country, to being smashed in the congested city! Fantasy? I pick this genre because although everything else in the book can really happen, houses do not think or have feelings in real life. Here is more on the Author/illustrator http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/mike_mulligan/biohome.shtml

DrSpalding The resource providing more information about Burton is great! It won the Caldecott in 1942. Wow! 7y

Actual Size is a wonderfully illustrated book that allows children to feel up and close with animals big and small. This non fiction book is a great choice for classrooms. I love how math, science and even social studies can be integrated. Here is a great resource that involves math https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/...

Bunnicula | Deborah Howe, James Howe, Alan Daniel
post image

This was a book that I remember reading in my 4th grade class. It was fun reading it over again and seeing it available through ebook. This is about a dog and a cat who are investigating a new pet. A bunny who happens to make all his vegetables white. Must be a vampire bunny! I believe this would fit under animal fantasy and also mystery. https://www.teachervision.com/fiction/bunnicula-rabbit-tale-mystery

DrSpalding My boys read this as literature circles in their intermediate, elementary classrooms too. This story evokes good conversation! 7y
LaurenMcl @DrSpalding It was a fun book to discuss! One not so great memory I have from when I read it the first time is that this book fell victim to Round Robin reading. This is a fun book and that took away from the experience I would say. Much better the 2nd time around. 7y
DrSpalding Remembering that round robin reading was not an effective method, you will be sure not to perform this with your own students @LaurenMcl 7y
