This story introduces readers to a clever little inchworm who measures things with his body to avoid being eaten by a hungry bird. It has beautiful illustrations and is a must read in the classroom for me.

This would be a good book for younger grades. There are not many words on each page and the words are easy to understand, other than a few. The illustrations fill up most of the page.

Review-Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni, 1960. The Inchworm is clever and quick to think. The inchworm knows ways to stay alive from the bird. The images are simple, showing many simple shapes just like the simple idea the worm used to live.
Blurb- I would read this as a fun story to my class to get their brain thinking about how easy it was to trick the bad bird.
Quote- “he inched out of sight.“

The ending of this book had some humor that is subtle, but I think would be enjoyable to kids.

This book was published in 1960, and won the Caldecott Medal. Inch by Inch is a short and sweet story about a worm who is trying to avoid being eaten by different birds. The illustrations are very simple and stand out against the white pages. This would be a good story for younger grades as it does not have a lot of words and an easy to understand plot.

Inch by Inch our small green friend proves how useful he can be to all the animals he meets. Inch by Inch is a SF Caldecott Honor award winning book by Leo Leonni that tells an encouraging story while also teaching students about a variety of different birds including their names, sizes, location, and what they eat. This is a great book for a RA and can most definitely be used as an introduction to a math lesson or science lesson! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This pdf: https://www.gpidea.org/document_center/download/ecems-info-briefs/Literacy_Inch-... is a great resource that includes how to integrate science, math AND literacy into activities and lessons about this book! My favorite activity is the one where students create a 1 inch green worm out of ribbon or construction paper and measure things around the classroom. This helps students to get up and moving while learning about math! (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 UDL 3.2 can be used during the RA by asking questions that help students determine key details, ideas and patterns in the text.
ESOL Strategy #2 can be used to have students go into small groups to discuss parts of the text as well as creating their worms and measuring the classroom together!
(edited) 4y
DrSpalding Remember that just because something may have a science theme, this does not mean it is science fiction. This is actually a fable written by the author. This would then be categorized as traditional literature. Read aloud and of course math activities work well. I have used this in my classroom with first graders. 4y

This RF written and illustrated by Leo Lionni won the Caldecott award! This book would be a great way to facilitate a math lesson about length. I think it would be good if the students had a shared reading and paired it with thinking of objects to measure in the classroom! This book contains stuff that we might not be able to measure, but we could find stuff all around and share what we find out! We could even make estimates prior to measuring

Macker11 Students could use UDL #6.3 by using this book as a source to learn to measure. ESOL #32 for working in groups! This great resource is exactly what I was picturing in my head for a lesson! http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/72932 #UCFLAE3414SU19 5y
MeganKlein @Macker11, I loved the way you came up with the idea to incorporate this book with a math lesson! It is so important for students to build literacy across all subject areas and this book does just that! The lesson plan you provided is awesome, and the EL and UDL strategies align perfectly with this text. 5y
DrSpalding You are easily aligning universal design and English learner strategies appropriately. Yes! Good books can be used in all content areas and this one works well in math. 5y

Leo Lionni does it again with this animal fantasy book about an inch worm who claims he is useful so he doesn't get eaten. The inch worm then measure things in the story. He encounters a nightingale who tells him to measure his song or he will eat him, the inch worm then inches away while the nightingale sings. This lesson plan is great to go along with the story http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/30039 #ucflae3414sp17
