Completely overrated.
To be more charitable, the novel had a very interesting theme but failed to explore the theme or the characters deeply. It ended too quickly, as well. I wanted to love this novel but couldn‘t.

This novel is short but it moves quite slowly. We are let into the thoughts and memories of the main character, Tayo, a biracial Native American veteran has been left mentally traumatised by the World War. The novel‘s main theme is, perhaps appropriately for a novel, storytelling and I think Silko does a brilliant job of showing how the native stories are being replaced by those of broken people.

The Swan Book | Alexis Wright

This is one of the best novels I have read this year. I read at the beginning of the year and I still think about it. It has no direct dialogue and the effect of this is quite eery and unsettling. The futuristic novel is a must-read for anybody who wants to know more about Indigenous Australia. I‘m not summarising the novel well but it‘s just as well, so that you can all read it yourselves to find out. This is a novel that deserves to be read.

I liked this book until when Jo and Laurie did not end up together. Prof. Bhaer quite literally came out of nowhere in the latter part of the novel and I have spent the rest of my life hating him, Amy and Louisa May Alcott for ruining her own book. End of rant.

MirrorMask Yeah I felt the same about Good Wives which is why I only read Little Women. 6y

I keep re-borrowing this novel from the library. I love it. Gene and Finny are both intriguing and well-crafted characters. The process of uncovering the seemingly idyllic façade of Devon, however, is a very heart-wrenching one which compels us to ask ourselves the over-arching question of what does it mean to be a good friend? And what is it about war that causes it to destroy people and innocence?

This was the first fantasy novel that I ever loved. It has been years since I read it but I still remember. Plus, it is a novel in translation. I plan to learn Dutch so I can read the original.
