Everybody's Son: A Novel | 
panNormally I really enjoy Thrity Umrigar‘s books. She usually creates strong, multidimensional characters, but I did not find that to be the case in this book. The story fell flat for me and I didn‘t connect with her characters in a way that I normally do. This one was a bit of a disappointment.
Decisions, decisions...which one should I start with? My next 4 books to read.
panCompletely overrated.
To be more charitable, the novel had a very interesting theme but failed to explore the theme or the characters deeply. It ended too quickly, as well. I wanted to love this novel but couldn‘t.
pickUmrigar explores class, race, power, privilege, and morals in this emotional heart-wrenching story that will stay with the reader long after it is finished.
so-soThis was just okay. The train wreck was foretold from the beginning of the story, so I was tempted to bail but only hung in to see exactly how the wreck manifested. It wasn‘t as dramatic as one might guess. Heavy-handed writing with the themes, which are interesting enough in themselves so no need to dwell.
I‘m not sure about this - almost 4 hours in and the oncoming train wreck is so obvious it seems like little is left to anticipate. 😳 The narrator isn‘t helping the experience either.
pickAnton, a 9 year old African American boy, is left in an apartment during a heatwave with no electricity, by his drug addicted mother. He breaks a window to escape and is eventually taken into foster care by a wealthy, white couple who recently lost their son. Themes of white privilege, racism, deceit and abuse of power. Moving story of love and loss and ultimately, understanding.

so-soI bailed but I‘m not going to say it was s bad book. I have transracially adopted children. I know birthmoms and adoptive parents. I did even feel comfortable reading abt this man stealing this kid. His doing it legally was somehow more heinous.
pickI'm going with a Pick on this read, but for a little while towards the end it started to feel a bit like a TV drama and I thought I might be very disappointed. Instead, what I feel is that for this little kid, everything is going to be ok. Who will write the stories of the not so "fortunate"?

pickWow!! This book! I hope I do this book justice!! Is blood thicker than water? This book asks and answers that question. Anton is torn between doing right by his adoptive family and he is grateful for all they have done for him, but, the question is has he been what he wanted to be or what he feels his adoptive family wants him to be!! Great read!! Very relevant to the times!! Read this book! 5⭐️

What an awesome book. I wanted to put it down a couple of time because it was challenging to read - in a good way. Privilege, racism, and politics all play a role in this story. The characters are so believable and so was the situation they found themselves in. If you haven't read any of Thrity Umrigar's books, you need to. She's an amazing storyteller!
