I read this in the original French. There were some funny parts, some heartbreaking parts, but it just didn‘t quite come together for me. It didn‘t really feel like a complete book. I‘m very curious to see how they turned this into a movie.

There were some really great bits of writing in this but I had several issues with it as well. The pacing was kind of all over the place, the untranslated bits of Filipino languages were distracting. I felt like I was missing a lot of context going into this with no knowledge of Filipino culture and history, which affected my ability to get into the story.

I really hated the main character in the beginning, but as the book progressed and I learned more about what made her the way she is, she grew on me. I loved the humorous, dead-pan writing style.
