Book #8. The Sisters of Auschwitch: the true story of two Jewish sisters Lien and Janny who were forced into hiding with their families during Nazi occupation, before they were eventually captured and sent to the concentration camps. A story of bravery, love and human endurance in the most despicable of places.

Book #7. Loved ‘The Book Thief,‘ but didn‘t quite get into ‘The Messenger.‘ But this was a beautiful, epic story about a family and their struggles, set amongst the backdrop of Australia. Made me wish I grew up on the same street as the Dunbar boys!

Book #5. Didn‘t love this book, but easy enough to read. My favourite quote “A child can always teach an adult three things: to be happy for no reason, to always be busy with something, and to know how to demand with all his might that which he desires.”

Book # 4. Enjoyed this tale of 19 year old Vivien Morris discovering herself in 1940‘s New York, with the backdrop of broadway and WWII weaving its way into her story. Her connection to NYC reminded me a bit of when I moved halfway across the world to London and fell in love with The city.

A prostitute (Tequila Leila) is murdered and in the remaining time after her heart stops beating she continues to experience memories from her past. In part 1 we were taken back through Leila‘s life, starting with her birth, the abuse by her uncle as a young child, her trauma as a teenager, and later the poignant moments she meets five very colourful characters. But I was a bit perplexed regarding the actions her friends take after her burial 🤔.

Finished my first book of 2020, and what a great book! After having recently read ‘The World According to Garp‘ a friend lent me her copy of ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany‘ which is her favourite book. I absolutely devoured this book enjoying the narrative and all its cast of characters. Looking forward to reading more Irving this year! “If you are lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it” - John Irving
