The Pier Falls | Mark Haddon
Pickpick

Wowee what a rollercoaster of short stories. One minute you're on Mars the next you're in a council estate. I absolutely adore Mark Haddon's style and love how he can write about things in such a matter-of-fact way yet convey so much feeling. He has a knack of making the humdrum of daily life so interesting and quirky.

Personal favourite in this collection are The Pier Falls, Wudwo and The Gun.

Jees. Just read Esi's story. Harrowing is an understatement! I kind of hoped she'd have taken the black stone and it was a recurring theme throughout the book. I'm going out tonight but I just want to stay home and read this instead...

I've essentially devoured this book in 2 weeks! It's an awesome book and I really recommend it if you like post-apocalyptic novels. There are moments where it feels very bleak but there are also really touching moments. The characters are all believable and I loved the innocence of Melanie which permeates the whole book.

Mccall0113 It's slow going for me but I will finish it! 7y

Wetlands | Charlotte Roche

I started off fairly enjoying this. I liked how frank and open she was and how she made me feel very uncomfortable. After a few chapters however and the initial shocks were over I just found it a bit tedious and that she was just writing things for effect rather than to add any merit to the story. Not for me I'm afraid.

Our Tragic Universe | Scarlett Thomas

I really love the way Scarlett Thomas writes. It must be tricky to write 1st person present tense and keep it going and making sense. This book is very "meta" and seems to be about everything and nothing all at once.

Started this on christmas day. I like how simple it is so you're not having to think too much and it's all about what YOU think and not competing with other people. I'm hoping this will help my creativity expand next year.

I love Liz Gilbert. Ever since I read Eat, Pray, Love. At times this book felt like she'd literally just cleared out every thought in her brain about creativity and the creative process, and I think that's why it worked so well. Creativity is messy and doesn't go in a linear way!

Wild has inspired me to be outside a lot more! I loved how this woman who knew nothing about camping and hiking took on this huge challenge and seemed to get through it all (particularly at the beginning) by luck. The hike she took was her salvation and I feel I learned a lot about myself as she was learning about herself too.

I also love how candid and vulnerable Cheryl Strayed is as a writer.
