🤔🤔Kondo now has an online store where you can buy more “stuff.”

Tamra I could buy a tea container for $200. 🤑 It‘s the Capitalist Way. (edited) 2w

cathipink I just got an email from my local bookstore for an event with a decluttering author that...requires you buy the book. I get capitalism but the piece that's left out of so many conversations is the way you live a minimalist life (which isn't necessarily my thing- I have Feelings about this trend) is to QUIT BUYING. 2w

I‘d have a lot more space if I followed Marie Kondo‘s advice, but I like being surrounded by books!!

Heard so much about Marie Kondo that the book fell a bit short. Enjoyed reading this on the art of tidying up where she suggests to sort things by category instead of rooms, tackle each category at one go, and discard anything that doesn‘t bring joy after thanking that thing. It was an interring read and looking forward to applying her methods and seeing her show on Netflix. #NFNov

This past week I‘ve been KonMarie-ing my stuff to adjust to relocating back to America, going through a breakup, and preparing for a new job and another relocation. Yesterday I finished the stage of discarding books, and I‘m happy to bid a bittersweet goodbye to 164 of them.

Books bring me joy, but the ability to pick up and move easily and live life to the fullest gives me a sense of purpose and joy in my life as well.

SW-T Congrats on clearing space for your move! Wish you all the best with the new job and relocation 😊 3mo

A little weekend pleasure reading, and then organized my closet and drawer space. 😇

post image

When this book came out, I didn‘t think I needed it. I‘m good at organizing and being neat. Recently, I decided I want to minimize my possessions and work to let go of momentos. This book meets me exactly where I am in life; needing to let go of the past and live in the present. This book is about so much more than decluttering; it‘s about tidying your life. 💙 Soon I will start tidying my clothes. Doubt I will let go of very many books. 😉

Finished another audiobook while walking this week. I also managed to clean up my nightstand. I‘m trying to declutter at least one thing each day for 40 days... even if it‘s only a paperclip!

My lower back is hurting me tonight. The older I get... 🤷🏻‍♀️

#bfcr2 midweek update and photo challenge post! Good week so far. This book has helped me a TON. I‘m in the process of more cleaning, but these shelves use to have a double row of books & more clutter 😂 Having a clean space around me helps me better focus on things like fitness, nutrition, even relaxing with a book. Clutter stresses me out! @KathyWheeler @Emilymdxn @RachelO @Megabooks @cobwebmoth @Trashcanman @wanderinglynn @TheEllieMo

TheSpineView I hate clutter and feel out of sorts when my house is messy. 5mo
Cortg OMG! I‘m in the same boat. We moved all of our bedrooms around last week! Kid 1 went to the guest room downstairs, kid 2 went to kid 1‘s room and the guest room went to kid 2‘s room. I COULd NOT EVEN THINK STRAIGHT with the chaos. I‘ve take 2 loads to Goodwill and sold a few things. Peace is slowing starting to settle back in. (edited) 5mo
cewilf @TheSpineView yes!! These shelves are driving me insane at the moment 😂 @Cortg I recently brought a few bags of clothes and boxes of books out of the house, it feels so good to get rid of things sometimes! 5mo

marleed I have a ‘library wall‘. On one of the shelves I created my own internal LFL of books. I keep a few books in a box in my car and donate to LFLs when parking allows. But while I‘m waiting to donate that shelf is available to friends and family. Two friends loaded up yesterday! 5mo
Lady_Tigana_20 I love her books. She is the only person who ever really motivated me to deal with my mess. I redid my closet and folded my son‘s and my clothes—way better than the stuff-it-in-drawer method I had been using. 😂Books are next on the list. 5mo
RachelO I‘m gradually getting better at reducing clutter (cluttered is probably my default, but it doesn‘t mean I like it!) - sounds like I should actually read MK one day. Congratulations on a good week! 5mo

Marie Kondo has a wonderfully unique perspective on how to take care of the things we own. She has such respect and gratitude for everything, and she truly tries to remind people to be intentional about the things we owned. The book got repetitive at the end, but it was wonderful overall. Her ideas have come in handy while I'm cleaning my room! 😊

post image

I just cannot imagine Marie Kondo being ruthless 😂

post image

Not as eye-rolling as I thought it would be so this was between a Pick and a so-so for me.
She has her view point and even though I do not think I will be implementing all of them, I am trying to keep an open mind and try it "her way" to curb the hoarder in me. ?
Filing this under "Something Written by a POC".

Honestly this book was just so-so for me. I much prefer her Netflix series and am quite happy that I watched it before reading the book, had it been in reverse I probably wouldn‘t have watched the show. While there are moments in the book that I enjoyed overall I felt it was repetitive and impractical. I definitely don‘t see myself (or anyone I know) drying their dishes out on a porch or veranda.

jb72 I wondered if the book got lost in translation. I read the book then watched the show. I felt the show really held up better than the book. 6mo

We are moving soon, and I just gave 200+ books to the junk haulers to take away. A lot of those were TBR, but I created a list on Goodreads to track books I‘ve given away. Now I can use this as a reminder list for Scribd and the library. Anyone else tried this?

I have very mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, I did not connect to the more spiritual elements of the book, that‘s not how my brain works. On the other hand, I did like the method of going through all you have in a category, like clothes, at once in one big day of sorting. I usually don‘t clear out clutter like that and it sounded like a good idea.

4.5/5⭐ Some claims Kondo makes seem far-fetched, but overall I adore her approach to decluttering and finding joy in your possessions. The gem in this book for me is her transparent discussion of how she initially started in tidying, what methods failed for her, and why.

I don‘t keep books if I didn‘t love them. My problem isn‘t books I‘ve read, it‘s the stacks I‘ve purchased after 2.5 years on Litsy and an ever-increasing Mount TBR.

I am letting go of some possessions I haven‘t used in years. This will hopefully make room for all of those potentially joy-sparking books! Greater happiness? Yes, I am here for it!

(PS: Chill out. That “30 books” people keep writing about was just a suggestion!)

Was anyone else skeptical of Marie Kondo‘s take on tidying up? I was, but her new Netflix series “Tidying Up” piqued my interest. So, I checked out Marie Kondo‘s audiobook, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” on Libby. By the time the introduction was over, I found myself folding laundry Marie Kondo style into little rectangles that stand up on their own. Read more: https://pickingbooks.com/blog/marie-kondo-konmari-method

wanderinglynn I haven‘t tried it. But a friend of mine did and said she freed up an entire drawer by using the Kondo folding technique. 9mo
PickingBooks @wanderinglynn It does save so much space. I was actually keeping all my pjs and athletic wear in my nightstand before I started folding this way. Now it all fits in my dresser with room to spare. 9mo

It didn‘t take reading this book to realize I have much tidying I need to do in my life. Not sure if I found reading this to be inspirational, motivating or overwhelming. I did appreciate her recommendation for approaching tidying and was grateful for her encouragement for letting go of things without feeling a sense of loss or guilt in releasing the extra stuff. For me the process will have to be slower than the author recommends though.

Loooooved this. I literally only read it because people were being dicks about Marie Kondo saying you should get rid of your books, and I actually ended up finding her advice incredibly heartfelt and practical. We have to clean out our basement this weekend, and I‘m having a hard time deciding what to do with these books, largely from my childhood.

SamAnne Keep them. Or give them to a child you know? I wish i had kept more of my childhood books. 10mo
thebluestocking @SamAnne Thank you for the perspective. I do want to have some of them. But maybe not all of them? It‘s tough. 10mo
Emilymdxn I have a system for sorting childhood books! Idk if I‘ll work for you but I always think to myself, would it matter in the future for me to have this exact copy again, or just to be able to get hold of a copy? If I know I‘ll value having my exact copy for emotional reasons I keep it. If I‘d just like to know I could find it again, I check if it‘s still in print, keep careful record on LibraryThing so I don‘t forget it and give away. 10mo

Emilymdxn I get emotional giving books I loved away and don‘t get rid of important gifts, books that were my ‘first‘ anything, books with writing in them. But I also love the feeling of giving books away and knowing those trees and resources are keeping having a role in the world, reaching new people and being loved by ppl who can‘t afford new books. One of the best bits of reading for me is giving them away 10mo

What happens when you KonMari your kids‘ books with the help of an 8yo and 5yo? It gets a little messy and chaotic... but in the end you get rid of 159 books!!

Which still leaves 698 kids‘ books in the house... plus the ones I know we have loaned out... we have under 750 now though! Which is pretty good since we were well over 900. 😂😳❤️📚 But now they all fit on the shelves, with only two small boxes of seasonal books up in the closet!
