An international sensationwith more than 1 million copies sold in Germany, and rights snapped up in 26 countriesWetlands is the sexually and anatomically explicit novel that is changing the conversation about female identity and sexuality around the world. Helen Memel is an outspoken, contradictory eighteen-year-old, whose childlike stubbornness is offset by a precocious sexual confidence. She begins her story from a hospital bed, where shes slowly recovering from an operation and lamenting her parents divorce. To distract and console herself, Helen ruminates on her past sexual and physical adventures in increasingly uncomfortable detail; what ensues is a headlong dash through every crevice and byproduct, physical and psychological, of its narrators body and mind. (The New York Times) Fantastically sexual, Helen is constantly blurring the line between celebration, provocation, and dysfunction in her relationship with her body. Punky alienated teenager, young woman reclaiming her body from the tyranny of repressive hygiene (women mustnt smell, excrete, desire), bratty smartass, vulnerable, lonely daughter, shock merchant and pleasure-seekerHelen is all of these things and more, and her frequent attempts to assert her maturity ultimately prove just how fragile, confused, and young she truly is. In the tradition of The Sexual Life of Catherine M and Melissa P.s 100 Strokes of the Brush Before Bed, Charlotte Roche exposes the double bind of female sexuality, delivering a compulsively readable and fearlessly intimate manifesto on sex, hygiene, and the repercussions of family trauma.

Hearing about the German healthcare system is making me extremely envious.

"They‘ve hung a light-green drape between my head and my ass. Obviously so my ass can‘t see my horrorstricken face."

"Her crotch looked like a sculpture of a newborn baby made out of cheese."
Today in odd similes.

"Top and bottom, I want my real lashes to look like plastic false eyelashes from the sixties."
This is my exact style, down to the technique she uses.

"Shaving myself is stupid—I‘m spoiled in that regard now. I‘m used to being shaved. I think that if men want shaved women, they should take over the shaving."

"It‘ll leave ugly bloody marks under your nail, too. The blood doesn‘t stay red, either. It turns brown. It takes a long time for it to grow out. In the meantime your nail looks like a sheet of floating ice with a piece of driftwood frozen into it."

quote

"Does that mean I was essentially naked for the duration of the operation? That‘s not good. I‘m sure they talk about the way you look. And you hear it and remember it subconsciously even though you‘re knocked out—maybe someday down the road you‘ll go nuts as a result of the comments and nobody will understand why."

"Immediately I got a bed in the proctology unit—or do you call it the internal-medicine unit? Internal medicine sounds better than specifying "ass unit." Don‘t want to make other people envious."

I started off fairly enjoying this. I liked how frank and open she was and how she made me feel very uncomfortable. After a few chapters however and the initial shocks were over I just found it a bit tedious and that she was just writing things for effect rather than to add any merit to the story. Not for me I'm afraid.

#November 9 Worst #Book I've #Read - I usually don't finish #books I am not liking. There's too much to read & no time to waste on crappy books. This one is a huge best seller and I have no idea why. Maybe just cause it's controversial. I do LOVE the #cover however! It's the only reason I keep it on my #shelf. #AngieBookishNovember #bookchallenge #coverlove #bookstagram #Wetlands #CharlotteRoche #erotica #shockvalue #pointlessread #intothefire 🔥
