Back in 1996, teens are pulled into a time travel war with their future selves. They use a device to switch bodies with their younger selves, sending their '96 counterparts into a future ravaged by a parasitic “zombie“ fungus and war between those who have the technology and those who don't.

They have to survive, time travel, and make it home before it's too late. Permanently.

Great book. Read it with my teenagers. Lots of history you won't learn in school. Don't just be not-racist, be anti-racist!

This book was great. A boy sees an autistic girl in a creepy part of the woods where something awful once happened. Shortly after the police link the kids to the girl's disappearance. But there's some crazy paranormal sh*t going on.
Read this one!

This is sooooo good! You may have heard exorcism stories before, but I dare you to find another Mormon exorcism tale. From the get go this one pulls you in. TJ is a hell of a writer, pun intended.

This is the prequel to “Scratches“, Marsella's other gem!
Severed takes place years before Scratches, taking us on the horrifying journey of the bad guy from Scratches became the bad guy from Scratches. Somehow, Marsella turned everything upside down and made me feel bad for George, the “bad guy“. Never saw it coming.
Great writing!

This is the coolest book. It inspired the SYGNYL podcast, from the creator of AMC's Dispatches from Elsewhere. (I interviewed him on my podcast!) It has 2nd person POV!!!!!!
Not done reading it yet, but it's so cool. I've not read anything else with the same structure.

Read an ARC of this. It's awesome. It's a book about a girl who starts over in Savannah, GA...the most haunted city in America. You can guess the tone from there.
From the author of Demon in Me, and The Night She Fell. You'll want to read this (and all her other stuff!).

Very interesting guy, this Richard dude. He designed video games, he's been in space, and he's been under the Titanic. (That's not really a spoiler; the book opens with this story. I won't go into detail. *wink*)
I read a select few non-fiction between lots of fiction, fiction, fiction. Probably half the non-fic I read is about writing fiction. So it's rare I read non-fiction that doesn't have a direct utilitarian value, but this was a fun one!!!

This is an amazing book. Brandon Scott is a great writer and tells a great story in “Vodou“. One of the most common comments is pacing. His pacing is perfect. Great characters. The story never lulls. I just want more!

J. Robert Lennon is a genius. You're never really sure where you're going, but you're excited to go.
A former physics PhD student has a nervous breakdown, attacks a teacher, and falls in love with his psych nurse. They divorce, he becomes a mailman, then he gets addicted to reading the townspeople's mail. Things go wrong almost from the start in a way that's hilarious, sad, upsetting, worrying, and captivating.
J. Robert Lennon...yeah, man.

I can't describe this book very well. It's one of a kind. A guy returns home from the military, restores his old family home, and takes a very strange journey into his own mind. Weird. Awesome. Love this author.
Try it.

Great horror novel that infuses rock music into the story!

Layla lost her father in a horrific accident when she was younger. Now she's a recovering addict and drummer in a Las Vegas-based rock band. When her mother becomes ill, she has to go home to New England and face her metaphorical demons.

And maybe a literal one...

Brandon Scott is an incredibly talented author. His protagonists are morally questionable, but they confront far greater evils, and develop into more easily likeable folks--with lots of supernatural thrills along the way.

The sequel to “Vodou“ centers on new characters whose story takes place at the same time as the events in book 1.

This is a really cool book. It‘s science fiction that, I think, would appeal to people who aren‘t big sci-fi fans. It‘s imaginative but also relatable. K Chess uses the sci-fi genre, set in an alternate future, to make important statements about the world we live in, relevant to immigration and refugee issues, as well as general loss.
Love it!

I‘m not a big fan of historical fiction, but this was awesome. Clashing noble families, religious wars, espionage, love, loss, sea battles, and a look at life in the 1500s and 1600s in Europe.
It‘s almost 1,000 pages, but if that doesn‘t bother you, go get this one!

One of my favorite books. A beautifully told story about a young man battling with depression. It's at times funny and awkward, other times sad and scary, but always very true and incredibly emotional.

On a personal note, Ned Vizzini helped me start my first writing workshop for students. He was a great guy, and even though his struggles ended tragically, his book lives on and continues to help a lot of people.

An important book for all ages .

Loved this book. It was found, completed, after Crichton‘s death. I‘m not sure why it wasn‘t published sooner, but I‘m glad it got published at all.
I‘m not a pirate story kind of guy, but Crichton could write about anything and make it interesting.
The book is full of interesting bits of history, but the characters and the action are phenomenal. Highly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed anything he wrote previously.

DAMN this is a good book.

This book takes place a few hundred years ago in Germany. A young man, sent away to boarding schools his whole life, returns to his village after being expelled for nearly beating another student to death. But he doesn‘t remember doing it. Upon arriving, the town elders tell him to leave. Strange things start happening. People start dying.

Old-timey folklore, magic, and horror. Hell yeah!

Scientists accidentally open a portal for demons to come to earth. I didn't finish reading this one. The plot is interesting, the writing is good--I don't know why, it just didn't grab me. I'd recommend it to people who like dark humor and irreverent paranormal stories. Connolly is pretty funny and a very talented writer. This particular book didn't float my boat, but I'd be willing to give Connolly another try down the line.

This is a very interesting book. It's about people who are rebuilding their lives in post-Katrina New Orleans. They have to deal with the wreckage of the storm, but they have their own sh*t going on too. Recovering from the storm is weaved into a metaphor for how to get over in life. It's not my usual kind of stuff, but I really liked it.

This book has one of the best opening scenes of all time. Steven James is one of the best writers out there.
Patrick Bowers is a FBI special agent who uses cool gadgets and cutting edge tactics to track down serial killers. His wife passed away, leaving him the caretaker of a step-daughter he barely knows. He's starting to get out there again romantically. And he's tracking down super violent psychopaths. This book is friggin amazing!

Great book. I‘d recommend this with caution. There are some powerful and disturbing images. It‘s a haunting book. But if that‘s your jam, READ IT!
It‘s about a group of boys who go camping on an island with their scout leader. On the island they meet a sick stranger, who introduced them to a militarized parasite and everything goes horrifically to sh*t.

Again—only read if you are cool with having nightmares!

Someone gave me this book after they read it. I‘d never read John Sandford before. I gotta say, dude writes some excellent character driven fiction. With help from Ctein, he crafts a beautifully realistic sci-fi adventure. (Sandford is usually a detective thriller guy, or so I hear.)
If you like your sci-fi to have lots of REAL science, this is a must read.
I recommend this to fans of Michael Crichton and Andy Weir.

Several hackers of varying age (and ability) are rounded up by the gov't after breaking the law. They are put in a work-release program--hack for the gov't and their crimes are forgiven. But they discover one of the craziest absolute-takeover plots in all of sci-fi! You'll be turning pages faster than you ever thought possible!
And you'll never look at your devices the same way again.

Genetically modified ants that paralyze you and eat your skin off? Uh...AWESOME! I‘ve never been more scared of ants in my life.
These weaponized ants are the brainchild of an eccentric billionaire. They get loose on an island and all hell breaks loose. Strong female lead. A few character cameos from Wendig‘s “Zer0es” (read that too!).
This book is creepy, smart, and full of action.

Loved this book. Blake Crouch is the next great sci-fi writer.
A man is abducted and transported to a similar, but different world where he is a stranger to his wife, he has a different job, and everything he knew never existed. This book chronicles his journey back to the place he belongs. Lots of twists and turns, constantly building tension, and an explosive climax.
Read. This. Book. ASAP!

This is my favorite non-legal Grisham novel. It takes place on Camino Island, FL (based loosely on Amelia Island). Five original F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts are stolen. In an an effort to retrieve them, a young writer with a history on the island is recruited to cozy up to a rare books dealer believed to be in possession of the manuscripts, but she starts to like the guy and the writing community on the island.
I didn't want to put it down.
