Zeroes: A Novel | Chuck Wendig
25 posts | 32 read | 15 to read
An exhilarating thrill-ride through the underbelly of cyber espionage in the vein of David Ignatiuss The Director and the television series Leverage, CSI: Cyber, and Person of Interest, which follows five iconoclastic hackers who are coerced into serving the U.S. government. An Anonymous-style rabble rouser, an Arab spring hactivist, a black-hat hacker, an old-school cipherpunk, and an online troll are each offered a choice: go to prison or help protect the United States, putting their brains and skills to work for the government for one year. But being a white-hat doesnt always mean you work for the good guys. The would-be cyberspies discover that behind the scenes lurks a sinister NSA program, an artificial intelligence code-named Typhon, that has origins and an evolution both dangerous and disturbing. And if its not brought down, will soon be uncontrollable. Can the hackers escape their federal watchers and confront Typhon and its mysterious creator? And what does the government really want them to do? If they decide to turn the tables, will their own secrets be exposedand their lives erased like lines of bad code? Combining the scientific-based, propulsive narrative style of Michael Crichton with the eerie atmosphere and conspiracy themes of The X-Files and the imaginative, speculative edge of Neal Stephenson and William Gibson, Zer0es explores our deep-seated fears about government surveillance and hacking in an inventive fast-paced novel sure to earn Chuck Wendig the widespread acclaim he deserves.

Crazy, batshit book!! Starts out at a school that's like Hogwarts for computer hackers, then just gets weirder and more banana pants from there. I liked all that characters, wouldn't mind a sequel since the ending was left open to more adventures. 4 💾💾💾💾

The train clanks on the tracks, rocking side to side. A hundred smells come together - garlic in the iron wok, wet goat, a tin pail of piss - and nausea forms a rolling boil in Chance's belly.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

This was fun and a little more thrillery than I normally read. I enjoyed the development of the zeros pod throughout the story and was satisfied with the ending. The framing narrative took a little while to make sense and I feel like it could be a whole other story. This was number 8 for #BookSpinBonanza.

Ragtag group of competent people coming together to achieve the impossible is usually my jam. But I found myself not really connecting here? I didn‘t really care about any of these characters or the stakes that were established.

BUT, the plot‘s fast and engaging. The technological aspects were fascinating. And the narrator works well for thrilling espionage.

All this to say, I look forward to trying something different by Wendig. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Several hackers of varying age (and ability) are rounded up by the gov't after breaking the law. They are put in a work-release program--hack for the gov't and their crimes are forgiven. But they discover one of the craziest absolute-takeover plots in all of sci-fi! You'll be turning pages faster than you ever thought possible!
And you'll never look at your devices the same way again.

Well, I expected to like this more than I did. Hackers and nanotech should be a win for me but I didn't connect to the characters and the tech part felt vague, if that makes sense. The audiobook narrator had a good manly man action movie vibe. I listened in Hoopla for the Sword and Laser monthly pick.

Foxyfictionista Hmmmmm I have this book in my tbr stack. Luckily , I only bought it from the library for 30p. 6y

A not-quite-so-lofty blend of Person of Interest and Mr. Robot, this was a good techno thriller with a cast of relatable characters who discover they're much more effective as a functioning group than renegade soloists. The rough, at times crass, edginess does feel overdone but the story redeems itself at the end. The ending feels rushed to resolve but it offers a nice hook to sell the next book in the series.

I enjoyed the first 2/3 of this book. Then it took a turn beyond which it could not recover.

Up until the story became grotesquely bizarre, the dialogue was snappy, the plot was rolling along, and the hacking was understandable. I‘m willing to suspend my power of disbelief for a good narrative, but not when it‘s beyond all reason and literally makes me roll my eyes and mutter aloud, “Oh, please!”

Zeroes earns zero ⭐️s in my book.

RamsFan1963 OH NO!! I've got this on my TBR shelves. I really liked Wendig's Star Wars Aftermath trilogy, I'm sorry to hear this wasn't good. 6y
ReadZenRites Don‘t dispair @RamsFan1963 I‘d say keep it on your TBR. I‘d still give it props for pure entertainment value. It‘s a good thrill ride, and maybe I would have liked it better if I had thought of it as sci-fi instead of a mainstream thriller. I enjoyed the first two-thirds, and the last part I just wanted to throw across the room...BUT I kept reading! That itself is telling. 😬 6y

ReadZenRites Another Litten reminded me that I could use a Spoiler Alert to fully answer what bugged me about Zeroes, and it‘s up to you @RamsFan1963 if you want to have the big twist (but not the ending) revealed in the comment below.... 6y
ReadZenRites So... @RamsFan1963 the whole “the brain is a computer” thing struck me as too unrealistic to qualify for a thriller, even if you pushed the era to the near future or shoved it into the speculative fiction genre, but he rest of the book too realistic for it to be scifi . I don‘t know enough about hacking to know if the the tech details are possible NOW, but they felt 2015ish-current to me (?). (edited) 6y
ReadZenRites @RamsFan1963 Somehow, that twist, with it being so out-of-genre and beyond credulity, it then seemed almost a short-cut to get to the end & I was mightily disappointed. The sophisticated tech details were what had made the plot unique up to there. After that it was just staying off the grid. I‘ve read that before. But the author also lost credibility. 6y
RamsFan1963 I read the spoiler, and I agree with your comment. If its contemporary, then that is pretty ludicrous. I'll still read it at some point. 6y
ReadZenRites I‘d like to know your thoughts if you do. 6y
Trashcanman Where the hell ya been? Smoking doobies with my brothers? What it is? 6y

This was difficult to rate. Although many of the characters were unlikable, I warmed up to most of the "Zeroes" by the end. However, I felt like the characters weren't as well-developed as I would've liked. I rate it a bit higher than a So-So, but since the story kept me interested enough that it was at times hard to put down, I'll call it a Pick. I wasn't completely satisfied by the ending--it seemed rushed--but overall, I liked this book.

TK-421 This was my first #LitsybytheNumbers read! (finally!) @Chelleo 7y

Creepily interesting....
Great characters. The story/plot either left out some information or took it for granted I understood some that I didn‘t. Since it was about hacking and disturbing government agents and agencies, probably both apply! The first and second halves of the book were very different – I much preferred the first half, and would have rated the book higher if it had continued in the same vein.

Is there a way to shelve books previously read here, like on GR, or is it more like a start at the present moment and never look back kind of thing?
