The Troop | Nick Cutter
WINNER OF THE JAMES HERBERT AWARD FOR HORROR WRITING The Troop scared the hell out of me, and I couldnt put it down. This is old-school horror at its best. Stephen King Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping tripa tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. The boys are a tight-knit crew. Theres Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well liked and easygoing; then theres Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be therewhich makes Scoutmaster Tims job a little easier. But for some reason, he cant shake the feeling that something strange is in the air this year. Something waiting in the darkness. Something wicked It comes to them in the night. An unexpected intruder, stumbling upon their campsite like a wild animal. He is shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungrya man in unspeakable torment who exposes Tim and the boys to something far more frightening than any ghost story. Within his body is a bioengineered nightmare, a horror that spreads faster than fear. One by one, the boys will do things no person could ever imagine. And so it begins. An agonizing weekend in the wilderness. A harrowing struggle for survival. No possible escape from the elements, the infectedor one another. Part Lord of the Flies, part 28 Days Laterand all-consumingthis tightly written, edge-of-your-seat thriller takes you deep into the heart of darkness, where fear feeds on sanityand terror hungers for more.

I've been wanting to read this since I finished The Deep, and I must say this was better! It falls more on the side of gross and disgusting than scary. I am not a fan of worms and after this book, I really really don't want to be anywhere near one! A good solid book if you have a strong stomach. And Corey Brill was spot on.

Body horror to the extreme! A small troop of scouts is camping on an uninhabited island when a very hungry stranger arrives. Many bad decisions are made. Loved the format with the interspersed interviews and newspaper clippings to tease out info. This hit a couple of my personal gross out buttons, definitely a great survival horror story!

TheLudicReader Some serious gross out moments, but compelling nonetheless. 2mo

First book finished for #screamathon... I get why this is considered horror (it‘s is horribly, terribly gross, graphic and disturbing), but I wouldn‘t say the book is scary. It is very well written (and very gross) and tension builds throughout. But gosh, it‘s so graphic. Seriously, I don‘t normally get grossed out by a book, but holy buckets, this is disturbing. Still I couldn‘t stop listening.

Did I mention it‘s really gross? 🤢😬😂

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

vivastory I literally gagged out loud when I read this. More than once. 😬😂 2mo
sprainedbrain @vivastory I made the mistake of starting it while I was eating breakfast yesterday. I did not try that again. My goodness. 🤣 2mo
TheBookAddict 😆 have you read Little Heaven? It was a really good book, I just wasn‘t quite happy with the ending, but I will be reading others by him because of it. The only book that has made me gag was “It,” when Bowers and his posey were at the landfill or junkyard (one of the two). 🤢 😷 2mo

Great book. I‘d recommend this with caution. There are some powerful and disturbing images. It‘s a haunting book. But if that‘s your jam, READ IT!
It‘s about a group of boys who go camping on an island with their scout leader. On the island they meet a sick stranger, who introduced them to a militarized parasite and everything goes horrifically to sh*t.

Again—only read if you are cool with having nightmares!

By far the most revolting book I‘ve ever read. It can be an enjoyably creepy-crawly experience, but at least one plot point seemed directly lifted from the superior The Ruins, and when the horror element evolves it goes from genuinely horrifying to B-movie schlock. STILL I would read Cutter again. His other books sound interesting. Has anyone read him?

Nute Yes, I read this book and it made me feel sick to my stomach. It was disgusting! I gave it a ‘pick‘ rating because it accomplished creeping me out ten-fold. 7mo

“His fear was whetted to such a fine edge that he could actually feel it now: a disembodied ball of baby fingers inside his stomach, tickling him from the inside. That's what mortal terror felt like, he realized. Tiny fingers tickling you from the inside.” from The Troop

1 of the best horror novels I‘ve read in last 10 years. I dare you to read it, watch The Bay https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1713476/ then try to eat. 😈

LiterRohde Liked The Deep. I‘ll have to check this one out. 9mo
flying_monkeys @LiterRohde imho The Deep wasn‘t as scary as The Troop, but The Deep was certainly claustrophobic. Had the violence in The Acolyte been toned down slightly then its dystopian future would‘ve truly shined because that world was more terrifying than both the other two combined, at least for me. 9mo

This book is nightmare fuel. A horrific outbreak amongst young boys camping in the woods, far from home with no escape is scary enough, but add on the depth of description in this novel and the isolation and it‘s even more than scary. I thought this was absolutely excellent because it wasn‘t just a horror novel that revolves around an infection, but it really got into the minds of the characters. Super terrifying. #newyearwhodis

I honestly couldn't get into this book. I gave it a good chance and read nearly 200 pages of it. It is a very very character driven story. I was under the impression that it was going to be a scary book with maybe some violence and gore. It is no where near what I would consider horror. There are some parts that some people I'm sure would find disturbing, but compared to other horror books I've read, this one just fell short for me.

Story of the Canadian equivalent of a boyscout troop on a deserted island for a campout when a mystery man arrives carrying an illness. I‘m giving this book a pick because even though it was so gross I couldn‘t read it while eating, there was a point where I audibly gasped “ohmygod!” The last third had me on pins and needles. Lord of the Flies plus mutant bioengineered tapeworms. This was very gory, more than I cared for. The story had potential and wasn't bad but I had some issues with the writing. The author loves using similes and especially comparing things to overripe fruit and the color of bruises as he used nearly the same comparisons several times. The boys were all the usual suspects and reminiscent of King's stories of boyhood friendships.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It's impossible to not note the similarities with "Lord of the Flies". The kids are fewer and far kinder, but the beast is pretty gnarly and quite revolting. A quick, fun read that left me...itchy. I won't be recommending it to any teenage Scouts though. They might leave the group.

Audible daily deal. Worth it? I‘ve read reviews saying creepy and good and some saying not. I was creeped out by The Bear and a little bit by The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore so I‘m thinking I might be overly creeped out.

Grimscythe Yessssssss. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @TheGhastlyGrimoire that sounds like an enthusiastic endorsement! 👍🏼 1y
Grimscythe It is. I looooove this book. 1y

Prairiegirl_reading @TheGhastlyGrimoire I‘m a bit of a chicken 💩 do you think I‘ll be scared? 1y
Grimscythe @Prairiegirl_reading Maybe. It gets pretty intense at times. It didn‘t give me nightmares or anything, but then I spend most of my time with horror. Also if you don‘t like wormy things, I would not suggest it. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @TheGhastlyGrimoire I think I‘m going to put my big girl undies on and give it a try! 😄 1y

Holy smokes! @BookwormAHN put so many goodies in my #summerslasherbookswap box I could barely fit them all in the photo. 😍 I'm especially excited to read The Troop...maybe it will be the book I bring along on my own troop's camping trip this summer. I also couldn't help but notice that the washi looks a lot like to a certain hotel carpet pattern...🤔😊 Thanks to @JoeStalksBeck for organizing this! I can't wait to do it again!

JoeStalksBeck Great haul! 1y
BookwormAHN Glad you like it 😺 Enjoy! 1y
SpideyBaggins “The Troop” is a pretty good read, old school horror style. Am curious about “Come To Dust”. Been hearing some good things about it. 1y

I am loving this warm weather. Reading on the balcony in the dark and not needing a blanket makes for a lovely Saturday evening.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was creepy and horrifying. If it was made into a movie, I'd have to watch it through parted fingers because I was afraid of what was coming next. Great #freakyfriday pick @Marmie7

Overall, this was disappointing. Other than an intriguing premise and a very good depiction of a budding sociopath, it wasn‘t scary or surprising. And the Lord of the Flies comparisons are completely off. Much closer to the Island of Dr Moreau. I probably won‘t read Cutter again.

So creepy and so good. All the Lord of the Flies comparisons we're spot on. This one hit my deepest fears and I can't stop thinking about it.
