Pig the Pug | Aaron Blabey
post image
Pickpick

Pig the Pug is an iconic character that came to life in this book. In this F story, Pig doesn‘t want to share any of his toys no matter what Trevor suggested. This book use rhyming and funny anecdotes to teach the theme that when we share, life can be so much more fun! In this activity, students need to think about a time they didn‘t want to share and why: https://romisharp.wordpress.com/2014/09/29/pig-the-pug-teaching-notes/

Barack Obama pays homage to 13 historical figures that changed the course of history in this NF text. He wrote this book as a letter to his daughters to show them that he sees a piece of each of these figures in them. The illustrations show each figure as a child and I think this helps show kids that we all start from the same place and if we make the right choices, we can do anything.

kenyanellie Here is a lesson to go along with your RA: http://writingfix.com/Picture_Book_Prompts/Of_Thee_I_Sing1.htm. UDL1.3: Offer alternatives for visual information and ESOL 48: Use group assignments, portfolios, learning journals and non-print options as alternative assessment 7y
ashley.v This sounds like a really good book. I'll have to read it. 7y
amandagrant This looks like such a beautiful book with a powerful message. Will have to look into adding it to my classroom library. Thank you for the insight! 7y

Tuck Everlasting is the F story of a girl named Winnie who is tired of being watched constantly by her grandmother so she decides to sneak off into the woods and she‘s something strange: a young boy drinking from a mysterious spring. The boy, Jesse Tuck, knows this is a very important secret so he decides to kidnap Winnie. The story explores the idea of immortality and choosing between what is right and what is expected of you.

kenyanellie I have seen this book be used as an RA and I think it is perfect for that. This website is a great resource to use to compare and contrast the two families in this book: http://bookunitsteacher.com/wp/?p=1126. Grace for President is the F story of a girl named Grace that is so outraged that there‘s never been a woman president that she decides to become the first. Although people don‘t believe her, she perseveres and does everything she can to become president. This pdf includes a reading idea: Grace for President.pdf. UDL 3.1: Activate or supply background knowledge and ESOL 16: Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities

AmandaHuskey I️ want to read this one but haven‘t gotten a chance yet! I️ love the idea that it‘s a girl wanting to be president and it would be great to see what the class thinks about it. 7y
kenyanellie I used this as my TeachLive and some of the students (CJ) definitely had a lot of opinions about a woman being president 😂 7y
amandagrant I love this book! Great way to incorporate Social Studies with American Government. 7y

This character is one of my favorites! In this story Skippy Jon Jones, gets lost in spice, yes SPICE! He pours some red spice onto his bed and blasts off into space. The Skippy Jon books include spanish phrases so they would be perfect for a RT with ESOL learners. Here is a RT script that you could use with your students: http://www.skippyjonjones.com/downloads/Skippyjon-ReadersTheater.pdf.

kenyanellie ESOL 24: Incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum and UDL 1.1: Offer ways of customizing the display of information. #ucflae3414f17 7y
kkidwell I adore the idea of using SkippyjonJones as a RT activity. I feel as if students would have so much fun, but also gain a better understand of Skippy through doing this. It is exciting that you were able to find a completed script specifically for a RT. (edited) 7y

A Poke In The I is a P book the is full of concrete poems. This book would be a great daily RA to get your kids familiarized with different types of poetry and its also a way to model fluency. Scholastic talks about a few ways to use poetry in the classroom and I think this book would be perfect: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/bring-poetry-class....

kenyanellie You could have students create their own concrete poems after reading through this book. The True Story of The Three Little Pigs is an awesome TL with a bit of a twist. The story is told from the wolves perspective and makes for a fun way to have kids think about the fact that there are two sides to every story. This book would be such a fun RA and you could use this website to help you make a lesson: truepigs.html.

kenyanellie This lesson has students form background knowledge by reading the original story of the three little pigs, UDL 3.1: activate or supply background knowledge and ESOL 36: ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses #ucflae3414f17 7y
CourtneyR Great idea by having the students read the original three little pigs, to build background knowledge. Then reading this version, they also could compare and contrast the two books. 7y

Where the Wild Things Are | Maurice Sendak
post image
Pickpick

Where the Wild Things Are is a book that I will always remember from my childhood. It was very special to me because it was also my mother‘s favorite childhood book and she even read to me from the same boom she had as a child. This is a story about a young boy named Max who‘s room turns into a forest right before his eyes. He travels to the place where the wild things are and becomes the king of all the wild things.

kenyanellie He soon becomes tired of the wild and travels back home. The book has since been turned into a movie so this could be the perfect way to have students compare and contrast the book to the movie. Here‘s a website that includes that idea along with other ways you can integrate this book into many different subjects: http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/where-the-wild-things-are 7y
kenyanellie This could be used as a RA with UDL 5.1: use multiple media for communication and ESOL 13: use preview/review activities and 17: provide contextual support. Where The Wild Things Are won the Caldecott Medal in 1964 #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 7y

These Hands | Margaret H. Mason

Pickpick

These Hands is about a young boy named Joseph and his grandfather who could do anything. Well almost anything. His hands could do most anything, but mis bread dough at the Wonder Bread factory. This is an inspiring story of a man who was told no and decided to raise his voice. He joined the civil rights movement and made sure that “any hands can mix the bread dough, no matter their color”. #UCFLAE3414F17

kenyanellie This book would be a perfect RA to teach students that they can do anything today because people came together to fight for their rights in the past. My post-reading activity would be to have students create four sentences about what they can do with their hands using the same parallel structure “Look at these hands...” and ending with “- Yes I can.” The link is listed here: https://www.teachervision.com/literature-guide/these-hands-teachers-guide 7y
kenyanellie A UDL Strategy that could be used is: 3.2: highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas and relationships and ESOL 16: integrate speaking, listening, reading, writing activities (edited) 7y

Lilly‘s Purple Plastic Purse is a wonderful story about an eccentric little girl who loves school and especially her teacher, Mr. Slinger. Lilly gets a cool new purse, jingly change, and sunglasses with a chain like Mr. Slinger‘s and simply cannot wait to show it off to her classmates, resulting in her getting them taken away. She is angry at first but soon realizes Mr. Slinger is right and makes amends with her favorite teacher. #ucflae3414f17

kenyanellie This book is the perfect RA. The activity I have found to go along with this is a character comparison between Lilly and Chrysanthemum.
