Barack Obama pays homage to 13 historical figures that changed the course of history in this NF text. He wrote this book as a letter to his daughters to show them that he sees a piece of each of these figures in them. The illustrations show each figure as a child and I think this helps show kids that we all start from the same place and if we make the right choices, we can do anything.

Tuck Everlasting is the F story of a girl named Winnie who is tired of being watched constantly by her grandmother so she decides to sneak off into the woods and she‘s something strange: a young boy drinking from a mysterious spring. The boy, Jesse Tuck, knows this is a very important secret so he decides to kidnap Winnie. The story explores the idea of immortality and choosing between what is right and what is expected of you.

Grace for President is the F story of a girl named Grace that is so outraged that there‘s never been a woman president that she decides to become the first. This character is one of my favorites! In this story Skippy Jon Jones, gets lost in spice, yes SPICE! He pours some red spice onto his bed and blasts off into space. The Skippy Jon books include spanish phrases so they would be perfect for a RT with ESOL learners. We Are In A Book is the F story of Gerald and Piggie realizing they are in a book. This is a great book for CR because it is so interactive and it would definitely have students laughing.

Bud Not, Buddy is the HF story of a 10-year old boy named Bud‘s life in 1936 Flint, Michigan. Bud is on a mission to find his father and on the way, Bud meets some wonderful people. This book would be a perfect addition to your classroom library for IR. This book is also a Newberry Award winner!

Last Stop on Market Street is the story of CJ and his grandmother‘s Sunday rides on the bus. This story can show children of all ages that there is beauty in everything and sometimes it‘s the little things that matter the most. This is a Newberry Award winning RF book that is perfect for an RA.

Martins Big Words, the Jane Addams Award winner, is a wonderful B about the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. The book explores what was said to Martin in his childhood that inspired him to be such an iconic historical figure. This book would be a great RA during a history lesson.

Seedfolks is a Newberry Award winner that follows 13 people from different walks of life coming together as a community to transform a vacant lot into a beautiful garden. This book would be a great RT to have groups of students create a script for a character and act it out in front of the class. Oh The Places You‘ll Go is the perfect RF book to end your school year with. This would be a great RA to get your kids excited to move on to the next grade and send them off with an inspiring message for the future.

Wonder is a NY Times Bestseller that follows a boy named Auggie who has a rare facial deformity. The story follows him through all the ups and downs he goes through as he enters middle school. Where the Wild Things Are is a book that I will always remember from my childhood. It was very special to me because it was also my mother‘s favorite childhood book and she even read to me from the same boom she had as a child. This is a story about a young boy named Max who‘s room turns into a forest right before his eyes. He travels to the place where the wild things are and becomes the king of all the wild things.

These Hands is about a young boy named Joseph and his grandfather who could do anything. Well almost anything. His hands could do most anything, but mis bread dough at the Wonder Bread factory. This is an inspiring story of a man who was told no and decided to raise his voice. Lilly‘s Purple Plastic Purse is a wonderful story about an eccentric little girl who loves school and especially her teacher, Mr. Slinger. Lilly gets a cool new purse, jingly change, and sunglasses with a chain like Mr. Slinger‘s and simply cannot wait to show it off to her classmates, resulting in her getting them taken away. She is angry at first but soon realizes Mr. Slinger is right and makes amends with her favorite teacher. #ucflae3414f17
