Then one day, her dad packs the family into the car, drives to another state and leaves Bethany with an aunt she never knew. She knows something is up and she decides to investigate. This CSK award is a poetry picture book. It tells an African folktale about a blacksmiths son who is captured and sold into slavery. The boys mother died in childbirth and he raised his son with the help of the four elements- earth, fire, wind, and water. On the last page it says this quote: "Kings may come and go, but the family endures forever." The authors note at the back explains how the author wrote the book. #ucflae3414f17

This Newberry honor book by Mildred Taylor is about, Cassie, a young African American girl and her family, set during the great depression in Mississippi. It tells about her family struggles to maintain their farm in a mostly white town. Cassie struggles with how African American people are treated throughout the book. This HF book is about a young boy who after escaping his abusive uncle stumbles into an army camp in NYC. Since he is only 11, he is a ammunition runner. He goes to the battle of Brooklyn heights/Long Island. This battle is an epic failure but is a great learning experience for the American army. This B book is about Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. It starts in 1840 when there was no such thing as woman doctors. Elizabeth shows determination and gets accepted into a medical school. It describes her hardships and how she repeatedly has to prove herself to the male doctors and her professors. It took courage to be the first is an excellent quote and is outlined in this book. Wish is a RF. It is about a young girl who gets sent to live with her aunt and uncle which she barely knows after her mom is arrested. She has one wish to find the family she has always wanted. She has many creative ways to wish, some I have heard of, others were new. She finds a stray dog and comes up with a creative way to catch it. The dog is her friend. This TL book by Hudson Talbots is one of my favorites. It is an excellent AS book. It is about Kate, a young girl, who helps the town witch when her horse is stolen. Her family tries to steal it back from the king and gets caught. Kate proceeds to tell the king five stories to try and set them free. This is called a frame story. This RF NYBS book is an excellent LC book. It is about a young girl with cerebral palsy. She can‘t talk or write. She goes to an inclusive classroom and keeps getting taught the same thing year after year. The problem is she has an episodic memory, so she remembers everything, but she can‘t tell anyone! Once she is able to talk via a machine all hell breaks loose. #UCFLAE3414F17

Matilda is an excellent RF book. It is about a young girl who doesn't fit in with her family. She is a genius. She can read by age 2 and is doing algebra at 6. When she goes to school, she has to deal with the evil Miss Trunchbull. She helps her teacher Miss Honey stand up to the principal. It has been turned into a movie. I think that it would be a great LC book. Kids will be make connections easily with this book. #ucflae3414f17

A TL RA honor book, Streganona is about an old witch who hires a helper named Anthony. She goes on a trip and tell Anthony not to touch her magic pasta pot. He doesn't listen and almost covers the town in pasta! This book will teach students to listen to rules.
