While not perfect (Ron's portrayal particularly annoyed me), it was such a delight to be back in this world.

tapgurl I do agree with your comment about Ron. He seemed like a bumbling mess! Maybe even an alcoholic? 8y
makeworkproject @tapgurl yes! He's not a character, he's a series of one-liners 8y

I should have bailed on this within the first few pages. It was all over the place, plot and style-wise, and the characters made no sense to me. Was I supposed to be sympathetic towards any of them? At least it was a quick read ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

An absolute must for any lover of Victorian or Regency literature (particularly Austen). Supremely fun!

I used to be a bit of an Austen-snob and was ready to turn my nose up at this book. But it was such fun!

This novel surprised me. I had no idea what to expect, and the combination of humour and warmth gave this family saga the right touch. Also, 'performance artists' are the worst.

annmcgraw I loved this book 8y
Angelala007 I just saw it's now a movie with ❤️❤️Jason Bateman❤️❤️. Must read first! 8y
makeworkproject @Angelala007 and Nicole Kidman, I think? I am sceptical 8y
Angelala007 @makeworkproject - I straight up love Jason. I'll deal with 'Nic' as Tom Cruise used to call her 🙃 8y

I am hard-pressed to choose my favourite Julian Barnes novel, but this is always near the top of the list. His contemplation on the importance of culture was revolutionary to me at an important time in my life.

Mehso-so

Julian Barnes' writing is stunning, as usual. This story, while fascinating, fell a bit flat for me.

Angelala007 Me too. I tossed it. After The Sense of An Ending, I thought all his books would be enthralling. Not so. The opening passage is beautiful though. 8y
makeworkproject @Angelala007 he's got a beautiful way with words. This was not his best. 8y
