Scream All Night by Derek Milman

Apocalypse Taco | Nathan Hale
Pickpick

Ridiculous book but I think it would be a great graphic to give to kids who liked 'Stranger Things' but aren't ready for anything too scary or heavy. Plus, I wasn't expecting an ethical issue to come up halfway through! Smarter than it looks.

Real Friends | Shannon Hale

Another fantastic realistic graphic novel for elementary age girls about friendship and growing up. If you liked 'Smile', 'Sunny Side Up', 'Roller Girl' and 'El Deafo' then you need to read this. So many feels.

"Okay, I just gotta say it." The guy touches my arm. "You are fucking gorgeous for a big girl."
I freeze.
"It's a compliment!"
I look at him. "Fuck you."

The Princess Diarist | Carrie Fisher

Pickpick

Listen to the audiobook. Just do it. Fisher is honest but not negative (my big fear) and she shares her secrets from making the movie. Billie Lourd reads Fisher's diary entries, which come off more like poetry than prose, as she ruminates on her brief affair with Harrison Ford the way only a 19 year old can. Highly recommend this!

The Hate U Give | Angie Thomas

"Daddy claims the Hogwarts houses are really gangs. They have their own colors, their own hideouts, and they are always riding for each other, like gangs. Harry, Ron, and Hermione never snitch on one another, just like gangbangers. Death Eaters even have matching tattoos. And look at Voldemort. They‘re scared to say his name. Really, that “He Who Must Not Be Named” stuff is like giving him a street name. That‘s some gangbanging shit right there.”

Listening to this, read by Collins himself! Things were decent until about disc 7 and now I'm getting a little annoyed with his actions. Still, fascinating to listen to him read his own story!

Private Eye (Deluxe) | Brian K Vaughan
Pickpick

Well...that was eerily relevant. My friend bought me this book a few years back so, of course, I haven't read it (#librarianproblem #noduedate) but I was home sick and needed something to read and finally picked this up and DEVOURED IT!!! BKV is one of my favorite authors and this did not disappoint.

Scythe | Neal Shusterman
Pickpick

So GOOD! And don't be turned off the "series" label - like the first Hunger Games, most of the plot lines introduced in this book are wrapped up in the end, with just a few left open for the sequels. I could not stop reading this! Fast paced and lots to think about, pick this up now!

Just when I thought I knew where this book was going BAM PLOT TWIST!!!

Switched from reading this to listening. Kinda disappointed it's not the actual cast and crew reading it but so many people have worked on this show, I guess that was an unrealistic idea.

Found this book while going through stuff at my parent's house. I remember loving it as a kid but not much more! So I'm rereading it to see if the magic is still there!

This book is so good. Lots of deep thoughts on death, life, mortality and more but hidden in a ya adventure. Kind of annoyed it is a series but I'm all in. Shusterman is one of my favorites.

Deserved that Newberry Award! Beautiful story that can be read by a child and an adult and the magic will be there.

Fascinating look at the creation of a modern classic. Also, reading this I know I would never make it in the entertainment industry! Or politics. I'll stick to librarian thank you.

Dark Matter | Blake Crouch

Science fiction thriller that doesn't just mess with your mind but also tugs at your heart before making it beat faster as things all fall apart in new ways. So good! Must read!

MyNamesParadise I have the audiobook cd checked out. It's up next once I finish the audiobook of Sh*t My Dad Says! 7y

This book is so well done on so many levels. It may be "children's fiction" but there is something here for readers of all ages. Gidwitz uses his passion for Medieval history and storytelling to weave a tale infused with real historical figures, locations, and legends that may inspire you to read beyond the book to find out more.

It's funny, it's serious, it's light-hearted and also full of sorrow. A great read and great audiobook!

This book is gorgeous and a must have for any #Fannibal. I don't think I am capable of cooking half the things included but I'm impressed that the recipes are even real! Maybe some day I'll try!

Great reimagining of the 'Jack and the Beanstalk' story. Ben Hatke never lets me down. Can't wait for the second book!

Listening to this in the car, narrator is perfect with her subtle NYC accent.

So far we have people hanging out in a bar talking about a boy monk that stripped down to his undies and beat some bandits to death with a donkey leg. Best book ever?

As I Descended | Robin Talley
post image
Pickpick

Robin Talley does a really great job of reworking 'MacBeth' in our modern world. She didn't just copy+paste the story, she reinterpreted it to work with modern young adults and the hierarchy that exists in high school. That doesn't mean she had to hold back on the horrific aspects of the Scottish play.

MacBeth is my favorite of Shakespeare's tragedies. I would be curious how someone unfamiliar with the play, would feel about this book.
