Winter in the Blood | James Welch
13 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
A contemporary classic from a major writer of the Native American renaissance, now adapted for film by Alex and Andrew Smith, starring Chaske Spencer and produced by Sherman Alexie During his life, James Welch came to be regarded as a master of American prose, and his first novel, Winter in the Blood, is one of his most enduring works. The narrator of this beautiful, often disquieting novel is a young Native American man living on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana. Sensitive and self-destructive, he searches for something that will bind him to the lands of his ancestors but is haunted by personal tragedy, the dissolution of his once proud heritage, and Montana's vast emptiness. Winter in the Blood is an evocative and unforgettable work of literature that will continue to move and inspire anyone who encounters it. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The Sentence was my #1 read of 2022. One of my goals for this year is to read all of rookies list of short perfect novels that I had not already read. I read wide Sargasso Sea Pat year and Sula before. This is also the first book I finished in the new year. Another litsy reviewer said it best. Everything that happens to the mc also happens internally. Fascinating and emotional book.

Julsmarshall Love that goal! I too loved the Sentence and want to read all of the books mentioned 🤩 2y
Sapphire @Julsmarshall I think The all of it will be next one from this list 2y

Perhaps it was the suggestion of death, but I smelled it, dark and musty, as surely as one smells the mother‘s milk in the breath of a baby.

But the distance I felt came not from country or people; it came from within me. I was as distant from myself as a hawk from the moon. And that was why I had no particular feelings toward my mother and grandmother. Or the girl who had come to live with me.

This is one of my all-time favourite book. It's a simple enough story, in terms of plot. A man goes haunting for his girlfriend and a few events come in the way.
But this outside plot is only a ruse, because the true story happens inside the MC. Everything that happens 'outside' has a complety different meaning 'inside'.
It's an awesome book.

I‘m about 10 assignments away from finishing my undergrad degree, and I‘m taking a year off to work before pursuing my Master‘s in Library Science. The other day I had an epiphany: as of May, I get to read books WITHOUT writing essays on them 😱😍😁

JoScho How exciting! 7y
cleoh @JoScho it‘s definitely giving me incentive to finish! 7y

I read half of this: some stunning standalone scenes aside, I have failed utterly to connect with this story and its characters. This one‘s just not for me.

Texreader It‘s always so sad when that happens 7y

I didn't know what to expect when l first read this book. I wasn‘t even clear what the story was about.
I ended up loving it. It's a journey, sure, but not just a journey on the road. Everything that happens outside the protagonist is mirrored by something happening inside the protagonist, until each journey enhances the other.
It's a beautiful book.

First novel by an lndigenous author l've ever read. Absolutely, completely loved it. No surprise l then fell into reading indigenous authors quite often.
I love the non-linear narration many of them use and the thin veil between realism and spiritual

shawnmooney Ooh this sounds right up my alley! Stacked! 7y
JazzFeathers @shawnmooney lt is truly beautiful. A great story of self discovery 7y

I'm reading Winter in the Blood again.

Elissa Also, this book is not by Louise Erdrich. 9y
jeff Elissa - all set on the author! Litsy relies on Google and Ingram data and we were importing both Welch and Erdich (who did the forward). 😄📚 9y
Elissa Thanks for the response, Jeff, and for the change! Very cool. 9y
