Burn Baby Burn
Burn Baby Burn | Meg Medina
Nora Lopez is seventeen during the infamous New York summer of 1977, when the city is besieged by arson, a massive blackout, and a serial killer named Son of Sam who shoots young women on the streets. Noras family life isnt going so well either: her bullying brother, Hector, is growing more threatening by the day, her mother is helpless and falling behind on the rent, and her father calls only on holidays. All Nora wants is to turn eighteen and be on her own. And while there is a cute new guy who started working with her at the deli, is dating even worth the risk when the killer likes picking off couples who stay out too late? Award-winning author Meg Medina transports us to a time when New York seemed balanced on a knife-edge, with tempers and temperatures running high, to share the story of a young woman who discovers that the greatest dangers are often closer than we like to admit and the hardest to accept.

Whilst I was really looking forward to this book, I did feel slightly let down by being mislead from the blurb. The story did have all the elements expected; a struggling MC in New York, around the time of the infamous Son of Sam serial killer, and it had romance. However I found the MC too unlikeable to care about her, the serial killer element wasn't a huge aspect as was only hyped rather than built upon, and the romance fell flat. Entertaining.

Meg Medina's Burn Baby Burn, which I listened to on audio thanks to AudioBookSync, is a fantastic YA historical novel centered on seventeen-year-old Nora Lopez who lives in New York in 1977 when the Son of Sam was terrorizing the city.⠀

Nora lives with her brother Hector and her mother; her father, who is remarried and has a young son, isn't part of her life. Nora is ready to be done with school, ⬇️

UnabridgedPod and though her guidance counselor is encouraging her to enroll in college, Nora just isn't sure. She loves her shop classes and excels at construction and design; she also loves hanging out with her best friend (the daughter of a fire fighter), dancing disco, and working at a local grocery store where she meets a sweet, handsome guy.⠀

The threat of a serial killer looms, but for Nora, the more pressing danger lies in her own home. ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod Facing abuse and reckless outbursts, Nora years to feel safe again. She's too afraid and embarrassed to share the truth of her life, even when the violence starts bleeding outside of her small family.⠀

This book has so much going for it: a great consideration of women's roles and opportunities that came along with the feminist movement; plenty of action and thrills with the Son of Sam stories; ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod fun references to disco and 70s glamour; and a vivid protagonist. The written voice here is so strong, and it's only accentuated by narrator Marisol Ramirez. This is my first book by Meg Medina, but I'll definitely be picking up more. 4y

I would absolutely love a sequel to this book. Nora Lopez, the MC, is one of my favorite YA characters. The book ends as she‘s finishing high school so I‘d love to see what she does after that. #SequelPlease #BiblioMAYnia

I liked this very much. Bits of it were rather melodramatic. But, even so, I found the main character‘s reactions to those events to be realistic. And it‘s set a tumultuous and specific time and place that I had never give much thought to before. Plus the cover is so shiny!

Very enjoyable read for #lmpbc this time. All the books this round were really impressive and had a few similarities across the board which was pretty cool. This one though was well written and researched and I found it to be compelling and unique. Thanks for sharing.

This is one of my favorite books set in the #1970s. It‘s got a great main character who is dealing with her own challenges while living in New York during the Son of Sam murders. That element gives it some creepiness but that just makes it more interesting. And of course, the title is a total earworm. #LetsTravelJuly

New York City 1977 lived in terror - Son of Sam was murdering young couples, violence and crime were at all time highs, and a deadly heatwave ripped through the city. All of this serves as a backdrop for Nora‘s story. This well told story examines family struggles, identity & perceptions, &!really a desire and need to break free. Great YA book...from @MallenNC ‘s #FreakyFriday list.

This book was pretty great. Set in the 70s in NYC while a serial killer is on the loose. The story was compelling, however I will admit to getting frustrated with how Nora and her mom treated her younger brother. He's a rotten kid, but they have to tread carefully around him because he's "young" and "growing". ? It was very annoying. Other than that, I enjoyed this book.
