Scythe
Scythe | Neal Shusterman
Two teens are forced to murder maybe each other in the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the "New York Times" bestselling Unwind dystology. In a world where disease has been eliminated, the only way to die is to be randomly killed ( gleaned ) by professional reapers ( scythes ). Citra and Rowan are teenagers who have been selected to be scythe s apprentices, and despite wanting nothing to do with the vocation they must learn the art of killing and come to understand the necessity of what they do. Only one of them will be chosen as a scythe s apprentice. And when it becomes clear that the winning apprentice s first task will be to glean the loser, Citra and Rowan are pitted against one another in a fight for their lives."

Great start to a dystopian YA trilogy. Disease, death & all bad things are over, it‘s a “perfect world” but people still need to die, hence the role of the scythe. Teens Cittra & Rowan are chosen to apprentice to Scythe Faraday, and they soon see the corruption in the system. https://cannonballread.com/2022/11/scythe-elcicco/

In a dystopian future where mankind has conquered death, Citra Terranova and Rowan Damisch are chosen to be apprentices to a Scythe charged with gleaning people in order to keep the size of the world population under control.

A perfect world where death has been conquered, surprise deaths and dangers are obsolete. All because that‘s the job of a scythe. They “glean”, don‘t kill, for the good of humanity. I feel for both Citra and Rowan being thrown into this job, one they don‘t want. It was intriguing to look upon how they train differently. Though their attraction to each other felt out of place. The villain had good points. The Thunderhead is very interesting

Ever since Amazon did me dirty with their train wreck of a Wheel of Time adaptation, I‘ve ceased wanting my favorite books made into visual media. 😒 However, I can‘t help but think Arc of a Scythe could be quite epic as a show if the right people (and budget 😅) were involved.

This is such a pretty set of books. From the inside out …

The end papers are 6 different pieces of art, each page has a border, signed by author. The hard cover is foiled & has a quote on the front, a design on the spine, and similar backs with block sprayed edges on top/bottom & stenciled edges. The jackets are reversible.

Loved this dystopian world! It seems perfect- no death, no disease, no war, no hunger, no misery but the question becomes what to do about the ever growing population. Aside from the interesting setting, the characters are all so intriguing and you can‘t help but root for good to prevail. Lots of questions about loyalty and right vs wrong. There were lots of plot twists I did not see coming and I can‘t wait to dive into book 2! #seriesread2022

Okay. You were all right! I really enjoyed this! I read some YA but not much, this was creative and interesting.
I enjoyed the world he built, and think there are a lot of thought provoking questions raised. I really liked the older Scythes and see potential for many spin offs.
Some criticism - I wish the relationship between the two mains was flushed out a bit more. I had a hard time understanding why they liked each other.

YOOOOOO this was so much fun to read! I really enjoyed it!

I liked the pacing but found it jarring sometimes. So fast-paced I didn't get a lot of quotes to post. Some twists and turns I expected, some I didn't. There were moments when I laughed out loud, too.

I didn't think it was perfect but it's so good!

I enjoyed this quite a bit and am looking forward to the next book in the series! My favorite aspect, as I kind of expected, was the world-building. It‘s such a unique take on the dystopian future. The plot was fast paced (maybe even a little too fast paced at times). The romantic aspects between the two main characters was a little groan inducing (very 2010s YA, which this is, so 🤷🏻‍♀️) but luckily a minor aspect of the story. Glad I read this.

In a seemly perfect world Citra and Rowan are put in a fight for their lives. Together they find out that perfection comes with a hefty burden. If you enjoy philosophy and fantasy this would be a great read for you. One theme in this would be; do you choose what‘s right or what‘s easy and follow the rest.

Julianna.Marois Philosophy Kevin? Really? 9mo
Kevin.Erick @Julianna.Marois It‘s a philosophical idea that in the event of the world was at perfection how would population be maintained. Since people escaped death shouldn‘t they be the one to bring it aswell. 9mo

In this world all sickness and death has been eliminated. Scythes are trained and ordained to “glean” (kill) people to keep the population under control. As in all dystopian books, something must change. Good characters and plot twists. 1st in a series of 3 books.

Read this as a part of a book club. It was fine, but the characters are all so completely one-dimensional and the plot is so very forced that it made it difficult to enjoy it. Also suffers from a classic issue with books: having an antagonist that is described as charismatic that never actually comes off that way to me the reader.
