Got some reading in today outside in the sunshine. Really enjoying this exploration of historical and linguistic and cultural layers of our common understanding of what the Bible is, and its contents. Excellently written.

“My message to you is this: Pretend that you have free will. It‘s essential that you behave as if your decisions matter, even though you know they don‘t. The reality isn‘t important; what‘s important is your belief, and believing the lie is the only way to avoid a waking coma. Civilization now depends on self-deception. Perhaps it always has.”
Masha Gessen‘s modern books read like powerful essays from newspapers. Which makes sense, since she writes for them. Her historical books take a tone I like more, but I always am glad of her cutting insights and connections across time regardless of the tone.
This was EXQUISITE. As a creator, I can only imagine it was written at the same time as Gideon. As a creator and a reader I am in awe. Pure excellence.
We can necromance if we want to ~
This book had me at, “lesbian necromancers in space,” but then it got deep, and it deftly handled worldbuilding and character introduction. The world and plot were dramatic and exciting, but the book REFUSED to take itself too seriously, and by the book I of course mean Gideon 😍 The ending punched me in the gut but was very satisfying. Looking forward to Harrow 💀⚔️🖤
