Surviving Autocracy
Surviving Autocracy | Masha Gessen
An indispensable voice of and for this moment. Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny A handbook for an age in which egomania is morphing into autocracy at warp speed. Kirkus, STARRED REVIEW Brisk, trenchant. . . . an authority lacking in other takedowns of Trump. . . . a must-read. Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW A vital and pressing reminder of what is at stake. Booklist, STARRED REVIEW In the run-up to the 2016 election, Masha Gessen stood out from other journalists for the ability to convey the ominous significance of Donald Trumps speech and behavior, unprecedented in a national candidate. Within forty-eight hours of his victory, the essay Autocracy: Rules for Survival had gone viral, and Gessens coverage of his norm-smashing presidency became essential reading for a citizenry struggling to wrap their heads around the unimaginable. Thanks to the special perspective that is the legacy of a Soviet childhood and two decades covering the resurgence of totalitarianism in Russia, Gessen has a sixth sense for signs of autocracyand the unique cross-cultural fluency to delineate its emergence to Americans. This incisive book provides an indispensable overview of the calamitous trajectory of the past few years. Gessen not only highlights the corrosion of the media, the judiciary, and the cultural norms we hoped would save us but also tells us the story of how a short few years have changed us, from a people who saw ourselves as a nation of immigrants to a populace haggling over a border wall, heirs to a degraded sense of truth, meaning, and possibility. Surviving Autocracy is an inventory of ravages but also a beacon to recoveryor to enduring, and resisting, an ongoing assault.

This book did not help me understand how to survive in an autocracy. I think it did a good job of mapping how, under Trump, we walked the line to becoming one, and perhaps now are in one, but I wanted to understand more about the dynamics of what living in an autocracy requires and if it‘s possible to really survive in one.
2/5 a good way to remember that we are terribly close to losing our democracy and what got us to this point.

I‘ve upped my coffee game lately with trying to buy whole beans from small companies so they are super fresh. I also bought this cool air locked container to keep them fresh-it has a plunger that locks out air and airtight top, then I bought a $5 milk frother for my creamer 😂 All for a nice morning cup (Coffee Chicks supports women growers and is a woman roaster company!) #coffee #booksandcoffee

This was a solid 5 stars for me. Sometimes in my observations of real life in real time I thought I had eaten some magic mushrooms and ended up in Wonderland. This book confirmed that I was not crazy or living a psychedelic experience. And to be honest, gaslighting is my word of the month. Sometimes I think it could be applied accurately to specific events discussed in this book. Is it possible to gaslight entire communities? Rhetorical question.

kspenmoll I adore this review! Serious but made me laugh! You captured 2020 perfectly! Stacked! 3y

Will you share your five star reads of 2020? I‘d love to see them! Please consider tagging me. Ironically this has been my favorite reading year this decade. Tagging some friends to get started but I would love to see everyone‘s! Tag a book you would hand to everyone and say “read this!” I would love to see yours if I did not tag you also!

sblbooks As Bright as Heaven was one of mine. The Five and Have You Seen Luis Velez were four stars for me. I will definitely check out some of the others on your list. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Oooo I'll have to look back through my list & see what I can find. I did read some good ones this year, although I'll admit that a lot of my 5* books were rereads - I turn to old favorites when I'm feeling stressed! 😂 3y
Mitch Cool! The Five was my favourite book of 2019! Going to pull from my shelves later and gather the best ones 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 3y

Started this book a day or so ago and it‘s fascinating. Shows how Trumps insane behavior and policies became the norm and now they took root.

Chrissyreadit I‘m listening to this on audio. It‘s incredible that this has happened and to me also demonstrated the danger of under education and education disparity- where it is easy to be manipulated. 3y

A very timely book. Masha Gessen was a journalist in Russia during the rise of Putin, and knows more than a little about autocracy.

If you follow what‘s actually happening in the US and the rest of the world, there isn‘t much new info here, but it‘s laid out in such a way as to make it easy to see where Trumpism is headed. None of it is ‘fake news,‘ all of it can be fact checked.

Unfortunately, people who need to read this won‘t.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

@sprainedbrain I just downloaded surviving autocracy- so glad you posted about it. And sometimes William Shakespeare speaks to my very weary soul. Sharing in case he speaks to yours also. 1984 gave me nightmares, and I consider it the most frightening book I have ever read- yet hear we are. Where science is questioned, human rights violated and actual journalism disregarded. Also - I‘m so grateful for my kids generation - they astound me. VOTE

Leftcoastzen Great post! Hang in there! 3y

Woke up this morning and put our second Biden/Harris sign in the front yard for the last time (we have to bring it in at night so it‘s not stolen like the first, while the neighbors get to keep their two Trump signs and a confederate flag).

Listening to the tagged book today because I can‘t concentrate on fiction.

I‘d never tell you who to vote for, but I voted for the decent human being who is NOT trying to delegitimize democracy.

Vote!🗳🇺🇸

MoonWitch94 @sprainedbrain Isn‘t that so shameful? Your neighbor‘s sign doesn‘t get touched but yours do! I‘m over the hypocrisy. 3y

SamAnne I live in eastern WA near north Idaho and see my share of confederate flags. Ugh. I‘m glad I don‘t have neighbors flying them. 3y
Liatrek ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 3y
sprainedbrain @SamAnne You‘re like me then... Iowa wasn‘t a confederate state, so I have to assume flying that flag here is just advertising they are proud racist asses, as my fellow Iowans can‘t use the bullshit claim that it‘s southern pride. 🙄 3y
KatieDid927 @sprainedbrain That‘s exactly what flying that flag means. 3y
Traci1 Here's hoping that the majority of Iowans are more like you than like your neighbors. 🤞 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Shame on anyone who flies that flag. It‘s deeply hurtful. And to me, denotes a violent nature. 3y
saresmoore It‘s exhausting being rational these days. 3y
sprainedbrain @JanuarieTimewalker13 it absolutely does. It‘s disgusting. 3y
Chrissyreadit WV is crazy as shit because this state FUCKING seceded from VA to fight against slavery and now is filled with racist flag flying assholes. And I‘m over it- my son begged me to take down our Hate Has No Home Here sign over fear of what would happen to us!!!! 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @saresmoore isn‘t that the truth!!!! I just don‘t know how these wounds will be healed. I don‘t think a President should be considered at this point without a degree in history. I just don‘t know any other way. We need a President 1. Who reads and shuts his trap. 2. Has a good knowledge of US AND WORLD history. 3. Is effective, level headed, respectable and respectful to ALL. 4. Realizes we are citizens of the EARTH and must be partners in healing. 3y
Palimpsest @sprainedbrain my 80-year-old dad is a republican and I tried to show him pictures on my phone of trump supporters that also had confederate flags being flown (among other things trump‘s done) and he told me the pictures were fake. He doesn‘t believe it. I guess that‘s how warped my dad has become watching Fox. It‘s really sad. I‘m trying to be hopeful that Biden will win this election. 🤞 3y
sprainedbrain @Palimpsest omg I have at least 5 examples of the trump sign/racist flag with a 5 mile radius of my home. 😞 I‘m being hopeful too! 3y
Leftcoastzen Look at all the pretty leaves . 3y
AmyG @Chrissyreadit I understand where your son is coming from. My husband wears his Biden face mask and I was a bit fearful, but I have become so hopeful as most responses are positive. One lady called him a socialist so he called her a fascist and she was shocked. I just pray that decency wins. (edited) 3y
Chrissyreadit @AmyG I wear a lot of clothes and my Vote mask- but we have had property damage that police refuse to follow up on and my daughter was threatened by local police with a tazor during a local protest - it‘s awful here 3y
DAB Nice pic.
3y
AmyG @Chrissyreadit OMG. That is horrible. I had no idea. Just be safe. 3y
KVanRead The fact that you have to look out of your house and see the neighbor‘s confederate flag is blowing my San Francisco snowflake mind!! I seriously don‘t think I could handle that. Hang in there and stay safe 💙💙💙💙💙 3y

Bookish.SAM ❤️❤️❤️ to you all from 🇨🇦... watching this all unfold from up here is giving me anxiety, I can only imagine what you all are going through. Good luck!!! 🤞🤞🤞 (edited) 3y
KVanRead @Chrissyreadit Not something I have ever seen or could ever imagine seeing here. We are bubble wrapped in blue and I like it that way, lol —although I definitely know people who wrote in Bernie rather than vote for Hilary, I still have the luxury of not fearing that my signs could make me unsafe. I have nothing but respect and admiration for you for standing up for your beliefs in face of that kind of hostility. 3y
sprainedbrain @AmyG that whole socialist thing blows my mind. Stop reading the trump talking points and do a few seconds of research. Also, your husband had the perfect comeback! 3y

Masha Gessen‘s modern books read like powerful essays from newspapers. Which makes sense, since she writes for them. Her historical books take a tone I like more, but I always am glad of her cutting insights and connections across time regardless of the tone.

Gessen‘s book is so rich with ideas that it bears multiple re-readings. I had two key takeaways from my first reading. The first concerns the stages of autocratic takeover, of which we are in the first: the autocratic attempt. Her framework comes from a Hungarian scholar‘s analysis of post-communist mafia states. The second takeaway is Gessen‘s careful examination of Trump‘s perversions of language.

QuintusMarcus 2. Excellent work, but I believe she missed a chance to broaden her analysis through reference to Klemperer‘s Language of the Third Reich. Surviving Autocracy is absolutely necessary reading, highly recommended. 4y
