Gideon the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir

Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you'll ever have with a skeleton. The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. Tamsyn Muirs Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis wont set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideons sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead. This was a fun space fantasy romp, but I think it might have been slightly overhyped for me by the internet at large. I usually love being thrown into a world without explanations, but in this case I couldn‘t keep the characters straight, even 2/3 of the way through the book. Having to flip back to the dramatis personae so often took me out of the story and made me increasingly frustrated. Still, I loved Gideon‘s voice and will pick up the sequel.

MayJasper Thanks for the review and for teaching me 'dramatis personae' 17h

For the record, I was not aware that books about young female necromancers in space was a thing that was missing from my life....but it was definitely a thing that was missing from my life. I loved SO DANG MUCH of this novel. I am not a huge fan of body horror, so did find myself skimming over a bunch of that. But as a whole, I am very much here for this. Bring on book #2!

Just when I thought I was done with sci-fi/fantasy, here comes Tamsyn Muir with @Liberty leading the parade and making sure everyone knew that this book was amazing! I was not disappointed. I was on the edge of my seat with the mystery, taken by the magic, and lol‘ed more often than I usually do. While the character development felt a little off sometimes, the book is good enough that I happily overlooked/forgave its imperfections.

Sorry for the lack of posts, I've been on vacation. I loved this book! It got creepy. And the page edges are black which just adds to the creepy look. This is the library copy but I might have to buy my own. I will definately be doing a re-read. It's hard to believe this is the authors debut book. Amazing writing and concept. I will be reading whatever she writes next for sure.

Uber creepy with some unexpected twists. Necromancy, duels, puzzles and betrayal. This is one you need to read, not listen to, as there are a lot of characters that are somewhat easy to confuse in first 1/2 of the book.

The last hundred pages save this book from being a pan for me. Tamsyn Muir‘s voice is a blast, and makes following Gideon Nav‘s story more interesting than it would be otherwise. Gideon suffers from a similar problem to Harry Potter: even though she‘s present for a lot of stuff that‘s happening, she herself does next to nothing to advance the plot. That makes the first 3/4 of the book boring. -continued in the comments-

BillBlume I also don‘t think Muir‘s writing is as solid as many are praising it. She does a dreadful job in scenes with a large number of characters and there a lot of scenes with a lot of characters. Harrow seems like the most interesting character in the batch, but I couldn‘t muster any investment in the rest of the supporting cast. “Oh, that Fifth House person died? Okay. Whatever.” -con‘t- 2w
BillBlume The worldbuilding seems like the most interesting part of the book, but Gideon is so 🙄 about everything and proud of being 🙄, that despite her interesting voice, she makes a dreadful lens for observing this universe. I feel like Tor Books saw the pitch “Lesbian necromancers in space” (which is a BRILLIANT pitch), decided that was enough to sell this book to readers, and then half-assed the editing process. I wanted to love this book, but it was ok.
I did like the two main characters Gideon and Harrowhark, and how their relationship was written and how it evolved.
I thought the plot and characters were confusing at times and never got a clear understanding of what was actually happening and in what direction it was going.
Towards the end things became more clear and finally some sword fighting that was absent through most of the story🤷🏼‍♀️

“‘Oh, this is boring,‘ Gideon had said in disappointment. ‘I wanted one with a skull puking another, smaller skull, and other skulls flying all around. But tasteful, you know?‘”

This was an excellent book. World-building + characters + plot + dialogue + so many innovative ideas I haven‘t seen before...this was totally out of my wheelhouse and totally worth it 💀💀💀

Its super hard to keep everyone straight. I feel like the stakes are high, for what reason we aren't really sure. The magic system isn't explained, which would be fine if there wasn't the melded past and present feel making it hard to figure out what is going on. There are space ships, but everyone is using swords and there aren't any cell or computer devices (I think?). Not a lot of necromancy weirdly. Yet, I want to read the sequel?

Wow wow wow this book. *Stefon voice* It's got it all: swordgighting, necromancers, enchanted skeletons, a dangerous quest for immortality in an ancient haunted house. I've never read a science fiction horror book before but I'll be eagerly reading all of this series. The voice is wry & biting & a perfectly hilarious contrast to the tone. I loved it from the beginning but it took me a little while to get to a point where I couldn't put it down 5/5

These characters have as many different names as those in a Russian novel. It can make it hard to follow. And the descriptions can get a bit repetitive. I still loved Gideon and am looking forward to the sequel. Lots of action, magic and gore make for a perfect balance of fantasy and horror.

I liked this book SO much, and I'm finding it SO difficult to describe. Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth is a marvel of world building. At its center is Gideon, a tough, engaging outcast who was abandoned by her mother in the Ninth House, the House in her universe that's dedicated to death and decay. She has been tormented, since birth, by her ruler, Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Gideon sees a chance finally to escape the oppressive Ninth House if she helps Nonagesimus. Two representatives from each house (a necromancer--that's Nonagesimus--and a cavalier--that's Gideon) must go to the abandoned mansion of the Emperor to complete a series of challenges and earn, eventually, a position as an immortal Lyctor.⠀ 3w
UnabridgedPod I know that sounds like a lot (and really, that all happens in the very first part of the novel), but it doesn't feel indigestible when you're reading the book because it's completely absorbing. Gideon, who is at the center of the narrative point of view, is funny and irreverent and foul, ⬇️ 3w
UnabridgedPod and her perspective on the events of the novel means that it's fun and funny even in the midst of death and destruction and (again) a *whole* lot of world building. I absolutely loved this novel, and I CANNOT wait until book #2 3w
Jesstifies I just finished this today and also really enjoyed it! I want to know more about the universe so bad!! 3w
UnabridgedPod @Jesstifies It really is masterful. I hope the sequel comes out quickly (though everything is so complex, I bet I‘ll have to review the details from this book no matter how soon it is). 3w

This ended up being a good story but it did take me halfway through the book before I started to get into it. Super unpopular and disappointing opinion time. After seeing raves about this one for the better part of six months, if not a year, this disappointed me. The pacing felt slow. The world building just throws you in, which I do appreciate, but never really makes sense of itself. And the narrative, for all its snark and bite, kept me at a distance. I wanted to like this one so much more than I did. And now I am also behind on vacation reading.
