I've stocked up on tissues and convinced myself I'm ready... 😬

GuiltyFeat However much you think you're ready, you're not ready. 8y
queenofthecouch That's what I've been hearing 😰 @GuiltyFeat Still worth it though? 8y

GuiltyFeat @queenofthecouch definitely worth it. It's pornographically miserable, but it's also shot through with beauty, compassion and love. I think it's a wonderful book. 8y

I really enjoyed Kephart's voice in this novel. She had some really beautiful sentences that were borderline poetic. I did feel like there were some deeper themes that I wish she would have explored a bit more, but all in all I truly enjoyed this book. I would definitely recommend it!

queenofthecouch It's so good @devynhinchee !!! I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time. If you like it you should read "Everything Is Illuminated" 8y
Devyn Ohh, I'll add that one to the list because I'm sure I'm gonna love it. Thanks! 8y

I went into this collection really wanting to love it. Although the majority of the stories weren't really in my wheelhouse, the ones I liked have really stuck with me. I'm definitely eager to find out what Miéville can do with a full novel. Any suggestions on which of his I should try next?

Spiderfelt That would depend on which stories you enjoyed. His style varies so much. I started with City & The City and then moved on to his more 'weird' fiction. 8y

This book thematically and stylistically made me think of Kafka's "The Trial". It was a little slow to start for me, but the last quarter of it was really captivating. Definitely makes you think about the meaning and importance of privacy, and how easily it can be compromised.

The nature of social interaction today, the way we are so exposed to the possibilities and variations of life, has the effect of making our own existence seem so much more finite.

NewWorldLibrary This is so true. It can all feel so overwhelming! All we can do is strive to be as authentic as we can, when we do have the time to interact and connect in various social worlds. 8y

Lawson's hilariously edgy with just the right amount of morbid. As someone who struggles with anxiety, I appreciate the way she puts words to feelings I didn't know how to voice. Sometimes you just need assurance that "no, you are not the only one", and for me, this book was that assurance.

CaffeinatedFae I own an autographed copy of this book! It is definitely on my to read list. 8y
queenofthecouch It had me laughing out loud at every page. But not only that she definitely poses some really deep and interesting points. I enjoyed that juxtaposition. Let me know what you think of it when you read it! @KristyJewel 8y
CaffeinatedFae I am tempted to get the audiobook. I had a friend that said it was worth it. Unfortunately most of my reading is for work so my reading is being put on hold. 8y

queenofthecouch I'll have to check that out! It would be fun to hear her delivery. I'm trying to get more into audiobooks, do you have any recommendations? @BookMusings 8y
BookMusings Hmmm... Audiobook Memoirs by Kate Mulgrew, Joan Didion, Jeanette Walls, Carrie Brownstein, Patricia Volk, Novella Carpenter and Kelly Corrigan are all very good, just to name a few! :) 8y
