Dodgers
Dodgers | Bill Beverly
"Dodgers" is a dark, unforgettable coming-of-age journey that recalls the very best of Richard Price, Denis Johnson, and J.D. Salinger. It" "is the story of a young LA gang member named East, who is sent by his uncle along with some other teenage boys including East's hothead younger brother to kill a key witness hiding out in Wisconsin. The journey takes East out of a city he's never left and into an America that is entirely alien to him, ultimately forcing him to grapple with his place in the world and decide what kind of man he wants to become. Written in stark and unforgettable prose and featuring an array of surprising and memorable characters rendered with empathy and wit, "Dodgers "heralds the arrival of a major new voice in American fiction."

I did this on audio to squeeze in one last book for June, but think it would have been better in print.

My first audiobook of the term has come to an end, and it was a delightful surprise. Now, the language can be foul, and the guys are criminals, but it was a book that made me want to stay in the car to keep listening to, which is high praise from me. I love teaching and usually bebop right in!

So if you don't mind language, criminals, mayhem, and unexpected character behaviors, read / listen to this one. Great reader, great book.

#NuYear #Cars Two books that feature a road trip gone wrong...Dodgers was a sleeper hit, gritty and timely with lots of insight 😎Listen to Me didn‘t work as well for me, it‘s an exploration of marriage and dealing with the aftermath of a crime..

TrishB Not read either of those ! But they won‘t be top of the pile I think. 6y

Enjoyed the characters, the prose, the audiobook narrator, an enjoyable experience all around. It's not a brainless crime novel, although I can like those too. The literary crime novel description is apt.

Im revisiting my recent holiday reading and no one in Amsterdam noticed me taking a photo of this in a crowded bar. This book was an interesting take on the great American road novel as 4 boys from a los Angeles drug gang drive across America to carry out a hit. Huckleberry fin meets the wire, a really good read.

A hybrid crime novel that starts off street and develops into something different. Not sure if the tone was consistent throughout and East is a frustrating protagonist, but there was definitely something there. Despite the blurbs, Beverly is no Richard Price, no David Simon... and perhaps I've had enough of books about young black men written by middle-aged white blokes.

#90sinJuly #Drive I can't get this song out of my head...MAJOR👂🏼🐛Dodgers is a crafty nail biting suspenseful coming of age story. Gang members; East, his younger brother Ty, Michael, a once neighborhood hot shot & Walter, an overweight computer nerd take to the road to kill a potential key witness threatening their operation. It's gritty & troubling, raising lots of interesting questions. Don't be put off by slow start.

Hollie I love a good coming of age story! 7y
Cinfhen I hope you'll try this one @Hollie even though it was really far from my reality I could connect to the characters 7y

#TBRtemptation post! In the vein of J.D. Salinger, Denis Johnson, & Richard Price, this is a story about second-guessing one's identity from worldly introduction. East, his younger brother, & other LA teenage boys in a gang, are sent by his uncle to kill a key witness against the gang who is hiding out in Wisconsin. They boys have never left the city before. Their eyes open to a reality they never knew. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Part cross-country-crime-drama part brotherly-coming-of-age-tale, Dodgers is a home run (you see what I did there it was a baseball reference due to the book being named after the LA baseball team). Beverly‘s examinations on the multitudes of “Americas” within America is made effective by having such a strong protagonist in East. Full review on Goodreads (where you're free to be my internet friend): https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1874652998

slhbooks Are there more baseball references in the book? I ❤⚾️ 7y
andytbarnes @slhbooks baseball is mostly used as a means of characters trying to blend in (African-American gang leader tells his young wards "white peoples love baseball" as he sends them across middle America). There is one specific scene in which baseball fans will probably laugh about more so than non-fans. 7y
slhbooks @andytbarnes Oh gosh, that's just who I am...a white person in middle America who loves baseball😉 7y

Here's the thing, if you're looking for a crime novel or an action-packed "urban" tale, pass this up. However, if you like a well-written coming-of-age story that's different from the typical YA tropes, this is a book for you. I connected with the characters and although I have no personal frame of reference for most of the book's plot, I connected with Beverly's story. I didn't anticipate it going the way it did, but I was happy with it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a road trip story, but a road trip with a dark mission. A clandestine journey eastwards with an odd sort of criminal fellowship. An enigmatic sibling rivalry, plans that seem destined to fail and the fate of the inscrutable, every watchful 15yr old known as East, all made for engrossing reading.

Read this for an atmospheric, almost stark urban crime caper but also read it for East, my favourite fictional character of 2016.

Ksvz The words were magical. A quiet and unassuming book. 7y

Adult Audio omg the words, the imagery, and the words of imagery. the story is frantic and the ending resigned. I don't know if I liked the story but the words, the cadence, the wonder all rolled into it in such a way that I loved it. +

While it took me a little bit to get into, I ended up really liking this one. Maybe it's the sheer fact that the ending wasn't typical - that it just cut you off and left you wondering about East. The writing style was jumbled (not bad) just sometimes hard to follow but it worked for the novel. After talking to friends who did the audiobook, I'm glad I stuck with the ebook. It was hard to picture the characters so young, but it is a reality.

Guys I tried to love this book. I tried to love it so much that I restarted my audiobook at chapter 18 (there are 22 chapters) because I knew I didn't give it my undivided attention and wanted to give t a second chance. Nope it still lost my attention. And I'm going to tell you know, If you want action or just something in general to happen in a book don't read this. I know this was very character driven.... I just still couldn't. I'm sorry bill b
