The work of a man who does indeed have many fantastic ideas and a novel way of bringing them across, it nevertheless fails to ultimately register fear for someone who's heavily steeped in online horror stories, although someone with a softer disposition is likely to be effected. If not for how charming and how it is a celebration of the culture and cuisine of Japan, this could have really fallen into the arena style narrative trap of one-upping another character with snobby points (and, oh, at times does it do JUST THAT). Thankfully, those parts are small matters amidst a great meal of charm, beautiful art, and moments of just lovely humanity, as well as genuinely caring if our hero can beat his father.

Kind of loses its "punch" when you've already seen the anime. At least the show is a good representation of the books.
