How to Be a Normal Person
How to Be a Normal Person | Tj Klune
9 posts | 13 read | 24 to read
Gustavo Tiberius is not normal. He knows this. Everyone in his small town of Abby, Oregon, knows this. He reads encyclopedias every night before bed. He has a pet ferret called Harry S. Truman. He owns a video rental store that no one goes to. His closest friends are a lady named Lottie with drag queen hair and a trio of elderly Vespa riders known as the We Three Queens. Gus is not normal. And he's fine with that. All he wants is to be left alone. Until Casey, an asexual stoner hipster and the newest employee at Lottie s Lattes, enters his life. For some reason, Casey thinks Gus is the greatest thing ever. And maybe Gus is starting to think the same thing about Casey, even if Casey is obsessive about Instagramming his food. But Gus isn t normal and Casey deserves someone who can be. Suddenly wanting to be that someone, Gus steps out of his comfort zone and plans to become the most normal person ever. After all, what could possibly go wrong? "

My infinity star read. This book is the equivalent of a comfy pair of pyjamas, something I slip back into whenever I'm ill or anxious or possibly both. What's not love about an asexual stoner hipster and an idiosyncratic curmudgeon living platonically ever after together? It has all the feels, laugh out loud moments, and harbours the only miscommunication trope that I've ever enjoyed. I've basically read (and reread) all of Klune's books now!

slategreyskies I‘ve never heard of this book. Stacking! 💕 3d
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @slategreyskies Enjoy! 💞 There's a sequel, too - 3d
slategreyskies I ended up picking up copies of both today. I‘m here for the demi and ace rep. 🌈 💕 3d
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @slategreyskies Oh my goodness... I hope you enjoy them! I actually had an ace awakening when I read this one the first time 🩶🤍💜🖤. That's why it means such a great deal to me. A-spec rep is so difficult to find. And Klune is ace himself, so that's even better. If you enjoy his writing, he has tones of other books, too. I'll keep a look out for your thoughts if you decide to post them on here 🏳️‍🌈💞. 3d

I love TJ Klune! 🖤🩶🤍💜

TieDyeDude This is on my Ace reading list! 2d
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @TieDyeDude Ooh, you'll love it! This was my very first ace read (and my ace awakening!) 🩶🤍💜🖤. 2d
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @TieDyeDude The sequel is fantastic, roo, this time with a demi character at the helm - 2d
TieDyeDude Nice! Thanks for the recommendation. It's so cool that you found your identity through this book. I think I came across the concept in a psychology magazine or something, but I always identified with Jughead's seeming lack of interest in dating 😅 It has been nice seeing increased representation in the past few years, though (well, an increase from nothing to occasionally something). (edited) 2d
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @TieDyeDude It's awesome how we all find our identities in so many different ways. Representation is so important. I just hope ace rep becomes more and more prominent (I think I've read most of the good stuff now). I wish I had these books in secondary school when I was at my most confused. Yes! Jughead's lack of interest in dating and absence of crushes was something I connected with at the start of finding my identity! He's awesome 😄. 4h

Some people practice mindfulness, but this is my version of it. Whenever I feel "weird and abnormal and strange," I dig out How to be a Normal Person and feel better almost immediately. It's such a treat to read such positive asexual representation from an ace author when you're an ace reader! The characters & storylines are an absolute hoot. I enjoyed it even more the second time around. This will forever be one of my all-time favourite reads.

This book was exactly what I needed on my crankiest day. Gus lives a regimented life in small town and might be a touch surly. When asexual, hipster Casey comes into town suddenly Gus‘s life is filled with the unexpected and he worries that he needs to learn to be normal. This book was laugh out loud funny when I didn‘t think I had it in me and also really lovely with its emphasis on loving yourself and others, imperfections and all.

When I got back from the bathroom just now, I found a tiny green hippo sticker in my bed. Either a deeply troubled person has hidden themselves in my house and decided to send me a cheerful yet ominous message or it fell out of this book, which I read a chunk of when I woke up way too early and couldn‘t fall back asleep.

I stuck it on the title page. It seems to fit in there.

xicanti @rockpools it was such a random way to start the day. 1y
rockpools It‘s TJ Klune. It‘s probably deliberate! Love it though 🦛! 1y

It's been a breath of fresh air to read an asexual love story in such an allonormative world (especially since I'm ace, too). This soul-stirring story is centred around accepting your quirks. Loving your beautiful - sometimes warts and all - authentic self. Gus's & Casey's tenderness towards each other, I believe, will continue on into a ripe old age, the pair on twin rockers & reminiscing about monkey adventures & poodle prostitutes LOVE!

This book was laugh-out-loud funny! Very few books have ever made me laugh out loud, but this one did just that multiple times! Highly recommend this for a quick, fun, quirky, feel-good read.

"You are exactly what you are supposed to be"

This book really tells us to accept, love and just be okay with whatever quirky, weird side our personality has. It is okay to be who you are. The most important part is just loving oneself and when that is accomplished you would be surprised how happy and at peace you would be with yourself. There really isn't a 'norm', its just you and you are perfect.
