Danube
Danube | Claudio Magris
4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
In this fascinating journey Claudio Magris, whose knowledge is encyclopaedic and whose curiosity limitless, guides his reader from the river's source in the Bavarian hills through Austro-Hungary and the Balkans to the Black Sea. Along the way he raises the ghosts that inhabit the houses and monuments - from Ovid and Marcus Aurelius to Kafka and Canetti - and in so doing sets his finger on the pulse of Central Europe, the vital crucible of a culture that draws on influences of East and West, of Christendom and Islam.

#MarchMadness #river This has been on my TBR forever.Maybe I can squeeze it in soon, my interest in it has increased a bit since the #NYRBbookclub pick this month Iza‘s Ballad by Magda Szabo takes place in Hungary.

Ok this is my pared-back stack, I've left out 7 books... But it's still over-ambitious... A Danube /Austrian theme as we're travelling there later this month. Dickens I must read before I leave London; and The Door for book club ... #photoadaynov16 #TBR

Amazing coincidence - I bought Danube this week for our upcoming trip - & now see it in the weekend papers, one of my favourite authors Richard Flanagan re-reading. My current read Europe is also an elegy to a lost Europe, as is The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig ... 📖

CoffeeAndABook Ah - I've read & really liked that book by Stefan Zweig!! Where are you traveling to? Austria? Germany? Or further East? Sounds exciting ⛵️🏰 8y
Abailliekaras @CoffeeAndABook we're going from Vienna to Nuremberg. Lots of Christmas markets for the kids and hopefully some reading time for me! 😉 8y
CoffeeAndABook @Abailliekaras Oh wow, that just sounds absolutely lovely!!! I'll bet the Christmas markets will be big hits even with the adults ; ) Have a magical time!! 🎆 8y
