Ink Mage
Ink Mage | Victor Gischler
In the first installment of the A Fire Beneath the Skin trilogy, the city of Klaar has never fallen. No enemy has ever made it across the Long Bridge or penetrated the city's mighty walls. Even when a powerful invading army shows up at the gates, the duke and his daughter, Rina Veraiin, are certain that it poses little threat. But they are cruelly betrayed from within and, in a horrific spasm of violence, the city is brought to its knees. With the help of her bodyguard, Kork, the battle-trained young Rina narrowly escapes the slaughter and makes her way to the lair of an ancient sorcerer--the Ink Mage--who gifts her with a strange, beautiful set of magical tattoos. Now a duchess in exile, Rina sets out on a quest to reclaim what is rightfully hers, aided by a motley assortment of followers who will help her in her cause--some for noble reasons and others for their own dark purposes. With the enemy's agents nipping at her heels, Rina must learn to harness her new and startling magical powers if she is to assert her rightful place as ruler of Klaar.

I did not love nor hate this book. The premise is really good! Tattoos gives a person abilities, using them too much can overtake the holder. The only complaint is that Rina was a spoiled brat of a dutchess and when she lost everything her change in character was instant. She did not grieve. She was just a different person entirely. No trace of her old self.

And so the slippery slope of impulse buying has begun ...... I‘m sure there will be a sale soon too 😊😂🙌🏻🤦🏻‍♂️ fantasy

Literary_Siren Sales usually happen after you spend a lot of, and then no longer have any, money! 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least thats how it always seems to work out for me. 6y

#recommendsday: I'm really, really enjoying this one. The mythology and magic structure is completely fascinating, and I love the characters. I'm only about halfway through but so far it's fantastic.

Started this guy last night and I'm really into it. Had to doodle out some love for the MC: everything about her description is begging to be drawn. (Really flubbed the tattoos, but I'll be drawing her again) #doodles #fanart

I actually really enjoyed this, and I think if it had've been written as a full book originally, rather than a kindle series squished into a book, it would've been a Pick. There's some clunkiness when the episodes join, and some mechanisms that would've been perfect for episodes, but superfluous in a novel. Kind of like binge watching a TV series, but expecting it to run like a smooth movie narrative. Def worth reading, just not quite awesomeness!
