In This Bitter Earth, Sugar Lacey is on her way out of Bigelow, Arkansas, where shed come to break with the past. With her worn leopard-print suitcase and her head held high, she walks past the prying eyes of its small-minded, cruel-hearted townsfolk, praying for the strength to keep going. She doesnt stop until she arrives at her childhood home in Short Junction. Here she learns the truth about her parentage: a terrible tale of unrequited love, of one mans enduring hatred, and of the black magic that has cursed generations of Lacey women. A powerfully realized novel that brings back the unforgettable characters from Sugar, McFaddens bestselling debut, This Bitter Earth is a testament to the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.

I flew through this book; it was a bittersweet conclusion to Sugar Lacey‘s story. I loved the characters were all connected from the start and the growth of Sugar was awesome to see. 100% a pick!

4.5 🌟so glad to have found this writer. The two stories are straightforward in their form but the story telling is effortless and compelling. Excited to read more of her work.

The continuation of Sugar Lacey's tale didn't have the same flow as the first but was compelling nonetheless.

Bernice McFadden at her finest. Whew. I usually do not finish books in a day, but I couldn't stop reading this one. I want to know what happened to these characters after what happened, but, at the end of the day, it was the best ending for the book.
