An Awfully Big Adventure: A Novel | Beryl Bainbridge
3 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize: In postwar Liverpool, a teenager joins a theater troupe to escape her working-class lifeand is drawn into a darker world. From one of Britains best-loved novelists, this is the story of Stella Bradshaw, an orphaned sixteen-year-old with dreams of getting out of her boardinghouse in the slums. Unwilling to resign herself to a job at Woolworths, she finds a place at the Liverpool Repertory Company instead. She quickly falls head over heels for the rundown theaters dissolute director, Meredith Potter, but he has no interest in her. And Stella is too nave to understand why. As she tries to gain experience with other colleagues in the hope of one day seducing Meredith, the director is faced with a crisis when a cast member is injured just as the companys production of Peter Pan is about to open. The replacement is an older man, a war hero and a prominent actorand hes instantly drawn to Stella. But while the romance that follows may be innocent, its implications are far from wholesome. Named by the Times (London) as one of the fifty greatest British writers since 1945, author Beryl Bainbridge portrays working-class England in the aftermath of World War II with her signature dark humor and dry wit. Adapted into a 1995 film starring Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, An Awfully Big Adventure is an atmospheric historical novel about the loss of innocence with a definitively modernand chillingtwist. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Beryl Bainbridge including rare images from the authors estate.

I‘ve loved all the Beryl I read this past year, and this was no exception. I really enjoyed Stella, a most unusual young girl and her start in the theatre. My only issue is that I don‘t really understand what happened at the end of the book. I keep going over it in my mind. 🤔

One of the best parts of my job is getting to discover authors I may not have come across on my own. We're launching ebook editions of Beryl Bainbridge's backlist on Tuesday and I'm finding her absolutely fascinating. Off to have a Bainbridge binge!

shawnmooney I picked up a Bainbridge novella couple months ago at a used book shop. The name has certainly been familiar to me over the years. This is the first time I ever heard that the this writer woman! :-) I was thought the name sounded male. That's so great! :-) 8y
Britafish @shawnmooney check out her obit in The Guardian. She was a total badass and completely fascinating. 8y
shawnmooney I will do just that! Wow, I just reread my earlier comment and am embarrassed about all the mistakes, which are the result of my using dictation software and not being a very good proofreader at 3 am before pressing send. 8y
shawnmooney Oh, and by the way, this is the novella that I picked up recently of hers: 8y
