Norwegian Wood
Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking, and Drying Wood the Scandinavian Way | Lars Mytting
7 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
The latest Scandinavian publishing phenomenon is not a Stieg Larsson like thriller; it's a book about chopping, stacking, and burning wood that has sold more than 200,000 copies in Norway and Sweden and has been a fixture on the bestseller lists there for more than a year. Norwegian Wood provides useful advice on the rustic hows and whys of taking care of your heating needs, but it's also a thoughtful attempt to understand man's age-old predilection for stacking wood and passion for open fires. An intriguing window into the exoticism of Scandinavian culture, the book also features enough inherently interesting facts and anecdotes and inspired prose to make it universally appealing. The U.S. edition is a fully updated version of the Norwegian original, and includes an appendix of U.S.-based resources and contacts.

My husband picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend and seems to be really enjoying it. He reads a chapter or two every night and always shares an interesting passage or two with me. Tonight‘s fun fact? Retired Norwegian men, according to the book, spend an average of 98 hours of firewood related activities per year... I wonder what I‘ll learn tomorrow? 🪓🌲🌲🌲🪓

I listened to this because I thought it would be really interesting to hear about the culture of wood fires. To my surprise this was a really good discussion in the opportunities in clean burning fireplaces.

An informative, easily read book on an integral part of Norwegian culture and life. I learned of the author, Lars Mytting, while watching the NRK's National Firewood Evening program on Netflix. Why watch a whole evening of television devoted to all stages of firewood? Because it's informative and thoughtful and more than a bit relaxing. Like the book. Mytting gets to the core cultural importance of the wood fire to Norwegians.

Phil is more of a magazine reader. This week he mentioned some books he'd like to read, so of course I ordered them for him immediately.

This whole book is about people winning at wood. I am now motivated to have the best damned stack of wood on my hill.
