Wahala: A Novel | Nikki May
post image

I initially bought this months ago based on the cover and a comparison to SATC. It is so much more authentic and lived in than that superficial mess. A group of Anglo-Nigerian women and their partners and families, navigating love and careers and parenting (or not) and above all, friendship. #TOB23Longlist #TOB2023

Ruthiella I read this earlier this year and really enjoyed it. I get the SATC comparison but plot wise it reminded me more of Liane Moriarty books. 4d
MicheleinPhilly @Ruthiella Agreed. I doubt it will make the shortlist as it seems a bit too “frothy” for TOB but I enjoyed it thoroughly. 4d

BarbaraBB Fab review, it sounds very good! 4d
Cinfhen If I remember correctly @Megabooks didn‘t like this one but your review makes me want to give it a try!! 4d
squirrelbrain I was just about to say exactly the same thing @Cinfhen - I‘d already marked it not to read, based on @Megabooks review, but now I‘m not so sure. Although I have precisely zero time to read right now, so may park it until the shortlist. 4d
Cinfhen It‘s on #Scribd so I might borrow before shortlist is announced @squirrelbrain assuming I don‘t get distracted by other titles!!! 4d
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain I really will be surprised if it makes the shortlist. If you‘re on the fence, I would say wait. 4d
RebelReader That cover is magnificent! ❤️❤️❤️ 4d
dariazeoli I think this epitomizes “cover buy” - it‘s so pretty! 4d
Hooked_on_books I really enjoyed this one when I read it. It‘s definitely worth a read whether it makes the tournament or not, in my opinion. 4d
Megabooks Yeah, I hated this. Like truly hated it. But a great cover though! Glad you enjoyed it. 👍🏻 2d

Cinfhen I think you‘d like this one @britt_brooke 😊you too @BarbaraBB 4d
BarbaraBB You drive me crazy! You are a feeder! 😂😘 4d

Cinfhen It‘s starting to drag @BarbaraBB so no need to obsess over this one. What do u think @Megabooks ?? 4d
BarbaraBB 😅 4d
Megabooks Yeah it‘s dragging a bit, but I‘m still into the narration. I‘m thinking it‘s going to be one of those 15 hour books that I wish were 10. Her antics are pretty funny though! 4d
Megabooks Reminds me of Melissa Broder 4d
Cinfhen Yessss to both the comparison, length and editing! Agreed her inner voice is hilarious 😂 plus I love all the Jewish references, but it‘s annoying (to me) how often the reader mispronounces Jewish words @Megabooks 4d
sarahbarnes I wasn‘t drawn to this one and your thoughts and @Megabooks are making me think I‘ll hold off? 4d
Ruthiella The Melissa Broder mention makes me even MORE interested in this one. 4d
Cinfhen It‘s actually VERY funny @Ruthiella @sarahbarnes and clever too, but the shtick is getting a little old by hour 5!!! 4d
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thank you! 4d
Chelsea.Poole Agreed with the cover art! 4d

Me: I‘m not going to buy any more #toblonglist books before the shortlist comes out.

Also me: downloads this 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

I‘m really enjoying the #audiobook narration, and her narration is so good that I‘m not sure it would be as good in print. It‘s definitely making the Christmas chores fly by! 🎄

Ruthiella Oops! But it sounds like it paid off! 😃 4d
Suet624 Sometimes you‘ve just got to do it. 💕💕 4d
Cinfhen Sounds SUPER familiar!!! I think this is available on #Scribd 🤩I‘m looking forward 4d

squirrelbrain Oops! But, a girl‘s gotta do…. I can‘t recall whether I can get this one or not… looking forward to your review though! 4d
BarbaraBB I don‘t even remember this one from the longlist. And I have the same resolution as you do. Fortunately the shortlist will be published any day now! 4d
Chelsea.Poole I‘m with @BarbaraBB this one doesn‘t look familiar. You‘re gonna have the whole thing read!! 👏 I‘m doing Christmas chores also. Actually all the chores 😝 4d
Megabooks @Ruthiella I enjoyed it but didn‘t love it. Still, I was what I was in the mood for! 👍🏻👍🏻 (edited) 2d
Megabooks @Suet624 truth 🙌🏻🙌🏻 2d
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m glad we read it together! 2d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I‘m running behind on reviews, but I agree with Cindy that it was overly long but relatively enjoyable. Not a must-read though. 2d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m so excited for the shortlist!! 😁😁😁 2d
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole doesn‘t it seem like there twice as many chores in December?? 🤣🤣 2d
squirrelbrain This is a ‘difficult to get hold of‘ one…so I‘ll wait! 1d
Chelsea.Poole @megabooks 💯—so much baking, decorating, moving the ELF 🙄, sneaking around with presents, festive cooking, picking up dropped pine needles from the tree. Truly endless! 23h
Megabooks I am really glad I didn‘t have kids because that elf would annoy the 💩 out of me @Chelsea.Poole !! (edited) 16h

This one is a slow burn. Over half the book passes before the event that draws the family and the young mother together, but I liked Strong‘s well drawn characters.

A matriarch has died and three siblings, their spouses and children gather for the first Christmas after. Each couple has problems, some they‘re sharing and others they‘re hiding. When a young mom connected to the family has an emergency, they must put aside their problems to help.

BarbaraBB This one sounds good too! So many choices!! 2w
sarahbarnes Looking forward to this one! 2w

Cinfhen This becomes available on #Scribd after Dec 4 ( for me) and I‘m looking forward 😃 2w
Chelsea.Poole I‘ve had my eye on this one. I love the cover. 2w
squirrelbrain I can get this on Scribd audio already @cinfhen… it‘s just finding the time to listen! Great review Meg - this is one I‘m really looking forward to based on the blurb. 2w
Cinfhen I‘ll be watching for your review @squirrelbrain if you get to it before I do!! 2w
Ruthiella @merelybookish also gave this a positive review. It will definitely go on my TBR whether it makes the shortlist or not. 2w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, and you liked Want too? She‘s one I need to keep an eye on and check deeper into her backlist. She‘s a solidly enjoyable writer. And both she and Kevin Wilson thanked Marcy Dermansky in their acknowledgements. It‘s interesting to read about connections amongst writers! 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen excited to read your thoughts then!! 2w
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole it is a fantastic cover! I‘ll add you to my tob tag list. 👍🏻 (edited) 2w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain sometimes making time is the hardest part. I hope you enjoy it! 2w
BarbaraBB That is interesting, about Dermansky! I don‘t remember much about Want to be honest 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w

A real life spy story and riveting tale of audacity, bravery, daring & brains. From the late 1970‘s until April 1985 the Israeli Mossad secretly operated in Sudan smuggling out 7054 Ethiopian Jews who were facing famine, abject poverty and extinction and brought them to Israel (Zion), a land the Jews of Ethiopia dreamed of one day returning to. It‘s a wild story and all completely true. Such an amazing piece of history. #nonfictionnovember

Cinfhen Our good friends Dr Morris & Elise Hartstein work tirelessly on behalf of Ethiopian Jewry and run a nonprofit❤️ Please visit their website www.operationethiopia.com and Instagram page www.instagram.com/operationethiopia 2w
Crazeedi Sounds like a courageous story, adding to my tbr 2w
Bookwormjillk Glad to see this on Scribd. I‘ll give this a go. I love learning about parts of history I hadn‘t heard of before. 2w

Suet624 7000? That‘s amazing! Enthusiastically stacking. 😀 2w
Cinfhen Yes!!! @Suet624 almost 30,000 Ethiopian Jews in total were brought to Israel between 1978- 1998!!! 2w
Cinfhen It was a wonderful surprise find on #Scribd @Bookwormjillk LMK if you give it a try 😁 2w
Cinfhen Hi Diane!!! Hope you‘re well - I think you‘d enjoy this story - @Crazeedi 2w
BarbaraBB I remember being surprised by the many Ethiopian faces I came across when in Israël. Great review! 2w
Crazeedi @Cinfhen I'm looking for it, thank you!! 2w

Oh this was a good one. I'm not overly familiar with high fantasy so not sure it would be considered that but I love the magic and world building in this one. The romance was good if a little cringy at the end a few times but I really liked it otherwise. #audiobook #scribd #fantasy #fantasyromance #romantsy

I don't know what she puts in her books but of course I cried like a baby. This is only my 2nd CoHo book but I actually really really enjoyed. #audiobook #scribd #romance #romantsy

The #toblonglist is out! (Thank you to @Ruthiella ‘s eagles eyes.) #tob

I‘ve read 24 titles and own (or are already on hold for) an additional 5. Beyond that, these are the other 11 I‘m most interested in with the ones I‘m more serious about buying on the bottom row.

Still not as organized as @squirrelbrain though!

Unsure who‘s on top of the tag list this year, but I would like to be included!

squirrelbrain Typically, most of those are the ones that I can‘t get hold of, or are ridiculously expensive! Although I don‘t fancy Babel, after a few reviews including one from @julesg. I have a physical copy of Grown Ups and it‘s *really* slim. I can send it to you when I‘ve read it if you like? 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I‘ve got to go read her review because I don‘t remember it. It would be lovely if you could send the book. Thank you! 😘😘 3w
julesG It's here. https://litsy.com/p/a084TlhkdllE but we also talked about it via email, I think @squirrelbrain. 3w
See All 25 Comments
Megabooks @julesG @squirrelbrain huh. I didn‘t think it would be that violent, but I guess colonialism very much is. Thanks for sharing! 💜 3w
julesG It's not exactly very violent on page. But what we'd call terrorism is implied, especially at the end of the book. 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain also I *still* have a birthday gift for Henry that I haven‘t sent! But the good news is I‘ve since acquired a gift for you too, so 🤞🏻 I can get it in the mail before thanksgiving (next Thursday). 💜💜 I need some of your organizational skills!! 3w
squirrelbrain You‘re right @julesG - we did talk about it more on email, but it definitely doesn‘t sound like my kind of book, and I believe it‘s a bit of a chunkster too! You may love it, though @Megabooks 3w
squirrelbrain @Megabooks oh thank you very much! 😁 I‘ll send the book in the New Year, as it will work for one of the #52books prompts so I‘ll read it early Jan. I can‘t believe it‘s only 6 weeks until ‘next year‘ though! 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @julesG thank you both! I‘ll take your thoughts into consideration, especially since you know I‘m generally chunkster-averse. 😉 Next year is 💯💯💯 fine. I‘m just thankful you‘re willing to send it! I‘m so close to pushing the buy button on Search! My parents were on SO MANY minister search committees at our liberal, social justice church that it quite intrigues me. 3w
BarbaraBB So inspirating Meg! I have read 11, own another 4 and have ordered 7 more that were affordable. Like @squirrelbrain I love some of your choices but they are are still very expensive here. 3w
Ruthiella Still, pretty darn organized! 😃 Search is the one on your list I‘m most interested in. I hope it makes the shortlist, which will force me to read it. 3w
squirrelbrain Yes, Search is (d7 here in the UK at the moment! ??? @megabooks @BarbaraBB @Ruthiella 3w
BarbaraBB Meg do you have favorites among those 24 books you already read? 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @Ruthiella @squirrelbrain the ones I‘ve added to my Amazon cart to watch Scattered = $17, Search = $22, Cyclorama = $21, but I‘m not jumping on any of those today. I may jump in Reward System, which is $14.50 for hardcover rn, so a good deal, but I just treated myself to two regular price books and a Book Outlet order, so I‘m not rushing. This was in my BO order though. 3w
Cinfhen There are several on this list Im interested in reading too and thankfully a few are available on #Scribd🙌🏻 Im not planning on buying any until the shortlist is announced. 3w
Cinfhen But the one that intrigues me most and is not on scribe (yet) is (edited) 3w
sarahbarnes Nice!! I‘ve read 12 and there are some on the list I‘m pretty excited to read, too. 😃 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB Sea of Tranquility, Lapvona, and Tomorrow x3 were all 5⭐️ for me but I also loved Checkout 19 and Mouth to Mouth (as far as ones I don‘t think you‘ve read). 3w
Megabooks @Cinfhen some years I pay more attention to the longlist than others. The 4 I mentioned prices on ⬆️ I may get regardless. Or maybe not. Trying not to be too impulsive! 🤣🤣 3w
Megabooks @sarahbarnes yeah, it‘s a good list this year! 3w
squirrelbrain Yes, I‘m most intrigued by that one too @cinfhen but it‘s only on Amazon for (d2, and not even on Audible. ?‍♀️ 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I just got Search on audible! Cassandra Campbell sounds like a great narrator match for the subject and I TOTALLY FORGOT I still had a credit this month! I may look at Cyclorama with one of my credits that comes on the 21st. @Cinfhen @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB 3w
BarbaraBB Thanks!! I just made a post about it where we can share suggestions. I just ordered Checkout 19 and Mouth to Mouth! I haven‘t read Lapvona either. 3w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I am intrigued by Cyclorama too. 3w
charl08 Ooh very tempting. I do love a list! 3w

#NonfictionNovember Pleasant listen so far - I‘ll admit I‘m not really familiar with Constance Wu other than knowing she was in the movie CrazyRich Asians. #Scribd

Megabooks I checked this out from the library but ended up sending it back. Interested to see what you think. 3w
Cinfhen Yeah/ it‘s just ok so far. I may bail too. You didn‘t miss anything @Megabooks 3w
