A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii | Vicky Alvear Shecter, Stephanie Dray, E. Knight, Ben Kane, Sophie Perinot

Pickpick

Loved this collaboration of interconnected vignettes revolving around the people of Pompeii in the hours before, during and immediately after the eruption of Mt. Veseveus. Each story/ chapter was written by a different author. Audio read by multiple narrators. I‘m off to Naples and the Amalfi Coast in 10 days so I‘m trying to read about Pompeii before visiting. Any other suggestions?!?

Susanita The movie with John Snow is pretty cheesy but entertaining in its own way. 1y
Bookwormjillk I'm reading Pompeii by Robert Harris now for #BookedInTime. It's not bad- good summer reading. This sounds better though. 1y
Cinfhen I bought Pompeii by Robert Harris but it‘s not holding my attention @Bookwormjillk I‘m gonna try again before it gets donated to the charity bookshop 😄 1y

Cinfhen Ohh, I hadn‘t thought to watch a film @Susanita that‘s a GREAT IDEA! 1y
GatheringBooks Omg Amalfi Coast! Enjoyyyy! 💕 1y
GatheringBooks No recommendation about pompeii but of course the neapolitan series by Elena Ferrante must be brought along with you to Naples. Lols. I did that last year! 💕 1y
Cinfhen Thanks so much @GatheringBooks ❤️💚🤍and yesssss, the Neapolitan series 🙋‍♀️ 1y
squirrelbrain This is set in Pompeii (I haven‘t read it) 1y
Cinfhen I saw that one on #Scribd @squirrelbrain - I might pick it up and check it out 😎thanks for the suggestion 1y
Centique Amalfi coast is the top of my bucket list so i hope you show us some photos! I bought this cookbook that im ogling in the mean time 1y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, that cookbook sounds AMAZING @Centique I think I‘m gonna see if it‘s available through kindle (edited) 1y

And once again #Scribd has removed a book from my current borrows🙄
Honestly, WTF?

Jas16 I would love to see them succeed but I cancelled my Scribd subscription. I have had a annual membership since they started and they kept the amount really reasonable until this year. I couldn‘t justify spending three times what I had been paying for something I didn‘t use as often anymore because of issues like you are having. I am lucky to have a great public library system I can use so I honestly don‘t miss them. 1y
Jess Sorry you are having issues with Scribd. I couldn‘t take it and cancelled. Shortly after I quit Scribd I found that the Queens library has a membership option for nonresidents. It was cheaper than scribd and gives me a whole other (fantastic) library system to check out audiobooks in Libby. Also love that I‘m supporting a public library. Not sure if that would work for you but it is another option. 1y
Read4life This is getting ridiculous. I‘m seriously considering canceling. Every time I open the app my fingers are crossed that my current read hasn‘t been removed (again) while I‘m reading it. 1y

Cinfhen Hmmmm, I think it‘s time I explore other options - thanks @Jess @Jas16 @Read4life !!! 1y
Read4life If you find something, please let me know. 1y
Cinfhen Will do @Read4life 😁 1y
rwmg Those looking for an alternative might want to try the Internet Archive. https://archive.org/details/books?tab=collection

It has a good collection and it's free. The only disadvantage is that you can only borrow most of the books for one hour at a time, though you can renew them when the hour is up. In theory a book may not be available because somebody else has borrowed it but I've never found that to be the case
1y
rwmg Sorry, I should also mention that you are basically streaming the books, so you have to stay on line while reading. 1y
rwmg You can see some of the books I've borrowed from the Internet Archive over the past couple of years here: https://pics.cdn.librarything.com//picsizes/2f/cd/2fcd8d23bbc8b06636c43323477437... (edited) 1y
Cinfhen Interesting suggestion @rwmg thanks for sharing! 1y
rwmg @cinfhen @Read4life Most of the books I was interested in that disappeared from Scribd have now reappeared and there have also been some changes to the overall look of the website, so it might be worth trying again in case it was just a temporary glitch while they were installing some new design features. (edited) 1y
Cinfhen So interesting @rwmg ! It seems like it was just certain new release titles that I was having difficulty accessing because I‘ve been able to borrow several other new releases in the past few days 😁❣️ (edited) 1y

I can‘t believe it @Read4life @Bookwormjillk ….it‘s gone…AGAIN!!! Honestly this is the 4th month in a row I lost the borrow before I could start it. It only became available on August3 (yesterday) and now poof 💨 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️#Scribd

Bookwormjillk I see what you mean now. That‘s annoying. Defeats the purpose of Scribd. 1y
Cinfhen It‘s so odd because other books im able to borrow all month long - im currently listening to Tom Lake ( which is PHENOMENAL)) @Bookwormjillk so in the end my subscription does pay off but the disappearing books can be really frustrating!!! 1y
Bookwormjillk @Cinfhen does it happen in the middle of listening to a book? That would drive me nuts. 1y
See All 11 Comments
Cinfhen It has @Bookwormjillk !!! Scribd claims it has to do with a certain amount of publication rights they are entitled to hold for specific titles - im not sure I understand why that would mean my losing a title in middle of listening to it or if I‘ve saved a title in my account. 1y
rwmg Yes, a whole load of books I had bookmarked to read one day on Scribd have disappeared. I think they are allowed to have a book for eg 2 years and when the 2 years are up the book just completely disappears from Scribd, whether or not anyone is actually using it. Unlike Netflix does with films or series, Scribd doesn't seem to be able to warn you that a book will disappear on such and such a date. 1y
squirrelbrain So annoying! Some books that I bookmarked have disappeared but one has recently returned. 🤷‍♀️ Tom Lake is fab-u-lous! 1y
Read4life Extremely frustrating! When I inquired I got: “there are some audiobooks in our library that, while still available on Scribd, are not fully accessible to you until August 02, 2023.
This is determined each month, in part, by your recent reading history. This is done to ensure every author is compensated fairly for their work and helps us balance a competitive monthly subscription price with an ever-growing library.”
(edited) 1y
Read4life I started a book the day it became available and the next day it was gone. I feel like it‘s one thing to take away a book I‘ve saved and completely different to take away a book I‘m currently reading. And without notice that it‘s going to happen. 1y
Cinfhen Yup! It‘s ridiculous and it doesn‘t make sense @Read4life I wish we would got some sort of notification @rwmg telling us the book is about expire and on which date. This way we can decide if we even want to borrow or save the book. 1y
Cinfhen Tom Lake is AMAZING on audio @squirrelbrain Meryl Streep is OUTSTANDING! I think she‘s the BEST narrator I‘ve listened to💕🙌🏻 1y
Read4life I was confused by the “it‘s still available on Scribd but not accessible to you”. If it‘s still available then you can let me finish or give me a “disappear” date. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 1y

Cinfhen I‘ve read two and own one 🥹I‘m hoping to #BorrowNotBuy as many as possible before the shortlist is announced🤞🏼🙏🏻 1y
squirrelbrain It‘s an interesting list I think! I‘ve read two (Barry and Maroo) and I had 4 already reserved at the library as they were rumoured. I just got the Bernstein as a #netgalley ARC and I can get Pearl on Scribd audio. 1y
See All 32 Comments
JamieArc I‘m a little disappointed that I haven‘t read one on this list! BUT, now that I‘ve read summaries, I‘m excited. I‘m also going through another rage that Book Depository isn‘t available because several of these aren‘t available in the US yet, or just not through the library. I do have access to three from the library, with another two on the way, so that‘s a good start. 1y
Cinfhen It‘s a very interesting list especially since I only saw a few of these books on prediction videos @squirrelbrain but im not really drawn to most of them 1y
wanderinglynn I especially want to read In Ascension, How to Build a Boat, & Pearl. I too hope to #norrownotbuy 1y
Cinfhen Yeah @JamieArc I‘m totally missing BD!! My library has only two!! Need to check #Scribd / they usually have a few 1y
Cinfhen How to Build a Boat also grabbed me @wanderinglynn but so far I can‘t seem to find it 😔 1y
wanderinglynn Same here. I just checked my library & none of the 3 I want to read are in the library‘s catalog 😔 1y
JamieArc @Cinfhen @wanderinglynn How to Build a Boat really interested me too so it‘s one that I chose to dish out some money for on Amazon, along with In Ascension. 1y
JamieArc @squirrelbrain I really wish I had followed your lead and listed predictions with Book Tubers, since I don‘t remember most of these being predicted. 1y
wanderinglynn @JamieArc I‘ll be interested to hear what you think 1y
squirrelbrain @JamieArc - the ones that were rumoured (that I saw) were the Harding (probably most strongly), McInnes, Barry, Eng and Adebayo. 1y
Cinfhen I read Escofery & Maroo, I own the Barry. I‘m on hold 8 weeks wait for Adebayo & Bernstein and I can borrow from Scribd the Harding but that‘s it @squirrelbrain @JamieArc @wanderinglynn even Audible doesn‘t have most of these books. I‘m going to have to wait and see what gets shortlisted 🥴 1y
squirrelbrain I‘ve been 2 in the library queue for over a month for a couple of my books, which doesn‘t make sense as they are 3 week loans. I‘m assuming they‘re ‘lost in transit‘ in the library system somewhere. So I may have to buy them in the end…. I can get a couple on Audible, Cindy, so they must be the UK based authors. 1y
Cinfhen Yes, most of these books are not available yet in the US @squirrelbrain so I‘m assuming once they publish in the US I‘ll have a better chance of borrowing some 🙏🏻 1y
Cinfhen I‘m drawn to The Bee Sting but it‘s 656 pages and it‘s not available until mid August. 1y
Deblovestoread I was so excited that my library hold for In Memoriam came in as it was on every prediction list I saw and then it‘s not there. Oh well! I haven‘t read any or heard of many but will keep an eye on US release dates, May just wait for the short list🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1y
sarahbarnes Thanks for the tag! I may have to wait for the shortlist to buy any - as you noted many not out in the US yet. I was pleasantly surprised about the list though. I‘ve only read one and some I haven‘t even heard of. 1y
Lunakay I was also surprised and haven't heard of any of them, I think I'll go audiobook on those I find interesting, starting with In Ascension and The other Eden. 1y
TrishB I‘ve read 1 and have 3 on the pile. I brought Bee Sting on holiday but haven‘t got to yet! 1y
Cinfhen I know @Deblovestoread @Lunakay @sarahbarnes @TrishB I thought I had an “idea” of where the longlist was going…but I was wayyyyyy off. 1y
BarbaraBB I am happy that the list is so surprising, no usual suspects! I read Western Lane and If I Survive You and have The House of Doors on my shelves. I can purchase most books here but I‘ll wait a bit to see what the reviews are. There are a lot I hadn‘t even heard of, despite @squirrelbrain excellent excel-sheet! 1y
Cinfhen We‘ve read the same two books @BarbaraBB 👯‍♀️ I think the next one I‘ll start will be this one 1y
BookwormM I have read 3 well nearly 3 over halfway through Old Gods Time. Read House of Doors and Adebayo. Sad Levy didn‘t make the list but great to have so many new to me authors 1y
sarahbarnes I can get Old God‘s Time, A Spell, Bee Sting, If I Survive You and House of Doors at the library here, so I‘ve gotten on the list for those! There are a few others I‘m interested in but I may see reviews/shortlist before buying. 1y
Cinfhen Yesssss so many new to me books and authors @BookwormM like @BarbaraBB said “not the usual suspects “🤪 1y
Cinfhen @sarahbarnes That‘s a great start!! I‘m really most interested in this one so please lmk what you think after you read it - it‘s the one book I might splurge for!!! 1y
BarbaraBB I might start that one next too but I have a bunch of them coming my way 😎 1y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 vacation reads!!! Totally makes sense @BarbaraBB 1y
BarbaraBB You‘re right! My suitcase of books is getting heavier by the week 😂 1y
sarahbarnes I will definitely let you know! It‘s still on order so hoping it doesn‘t take too long to get it! 1y

How the hell are we almost in August???? Kunstlers has been on my forecast for months but it keeps disappearing from #Scribd every month before I can borrow it, so this month I‘m determined to finally pick it up first chance I get! I‘m in middle of Kala but it might be headed for a bail. It‘s a great story but I‘m having difficulty following along on audio. Can‘t wait to start my #TitlesAndTunes and Happiness is an #ARC ( not great so far)

squirrelbrain That‘s a shame about Kala; it‘s one I‘ve been intrigued about. 1y
Cinfhen I‘m sure others might be fine with the audio @squirrelbrain but now I‘m too far invested to quit BUT heads up - there is a very disturbing scene involving a dog fight 😖😭that I would definitely recommend skipping over, which is difficult to do on audio (edited) 1y
TrishB Oh no- I have Kala ready- I always skip over animal stuff. Thanks for warning, Will know when I‘m ready. 1y

Read4life @Cinfhen I‘m glad you mentioned #Scribd. The past two months I‘ve had books disappear while I was listening to them. I understand why they say books disappear, but I didn‘t think they‘d disappear while I was listening. Very frustrating. Especially when so many are disappearing after 5 days or less after becoming available. Any suggestions on how to manage my wishlist? 1y
Bookwormjillk I didn‘t realize books could disappear from Scribd. Is that new? 1y
Cinfhen It‘s SUPER FRUSTRATING @Read4life @Bookwormjillk - I think the trick is not to hold more than one or two books at a time. Some months I can borrow a dozen audiobooks and other months I get shut out after I borrow 2! There doesn‘t really seem to be a rhyme or reason 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y
Cinfhen I immediately thought of you @TrishB when I got to the dog scene 😩🥺 1y
