In the 1840s a 13-year-old boy, Gemmy Fairley, is cast ashore in the far north of Australia and taken in by Aborigines. Sixteen years later, when settlers reach the area, he moves back into the world of Europeans. He finds his whiteness as unsettling as the knowledge he brings with him.

I liked the setting in early colonial Australia, but the story never really took off for me. Too many characters and storylines were not fully developed. #1001books

This is a difficult review because this book is so beautifully written. The prose is gorgeous and lyrical, and there are some sections that are tattooed on my brain. But it is problematic. Malouf manages to have an entire book with many elements of the Aboriginal culture that silences the people of that culture. Aborigines are present as an idea, but not as individuals. The main representative of the aboriginal in the text is a white man.

Pickpick

This was a deep look at racism from Australia. I'm almost certain now that Australian is its own language. Bonus points for matching my cat.
