Young adults read about the cuban revolution. Told from the point of a 14 year old who, along with her 7 year old brother, get sent to the US by their parents for safety. Will they ever see Cuba again? Will they ever see their parents again? Great read. Couldn't put it down. Lots of feels..sadness, hopefulness, tension, gratitude..💔💔💔💔💔

I found this book captivating. While I'm not overly familiar w/Cuba's history, the foreboding built early in this book is enough to stress the danger that the Alvarez family must escape. The author does a great job of contrasting these fears w/the normal day-to-day worries Lucia experiences as a teen. I found the whole story so engaging as well as moving. It brought me to tears several times, and I wish it had been around when I was a kid.

💝 💝 💝Such a great story. I was pretty torn sometimes, knowing a lot of this history and as a child of the kids in this situation. I grew up hearing stories about coming to America and learning to deal with being in a new country and there was a lot of pride around being refugees from communism. Reading through this gave those old stories a little more perspective. Great pick for Read Harder #19!

I was meant to run a 5K race this morning but it‘s too icy to drive. Guess I‘ll have to stay in bed with a book 😊

An amazing book that looks at the start of the Cuban Revolution and one girl's immigration to the States. Heartbreaking and eye opening (as I knew very little about this time). It's a fictionalized account of very real events.

You know how sometimes things just happened to pop up in your life more than once? I got this book for free and started it shortly after seeing a play called The Golem of Havana. Both are about a teenage girl growing up in Havana on the brink of the revolution. I loved seeing two different versions of the same point in history.

#Booktober #ImmigrantStories When I read about today's photo I could only think of one book. I read it a couple of years ago in a book tour so I don't own it, but I think it is great, a moving story about a girl trying to find a new place in a new world for her.
