I‘ve read this short story by Wharton before but did not remember all of the details - Wharton does well bringing some spooky elements into this one. It‘s a very slow burner, and you have to pay close attention to catch everything. A couple decides to spend their riches on an English estate that is supposedly haunted, but one only knows it‘s haunted until “long afterward.” Spooky indeed!

'Afterward' by Edith Wharton is an amusing and intriguing short ghost story about the bad consequences of greediness. I loved how well-crafted the story is, as well as the exquisite prose, and how the author describes the thoughts and feelings of the main character, Mary Boyne.

Nute Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 4y

Proseco and Swedish crisps to snack on while I read 👍🏻
Edith Wharton is wordy as hell and this is a tiny book that is totally creepy. Those Victorians must have loved this! There is a whole series of these little Christmas Eve ghost stories, maybe it will become a tradition to read one

In the 1800's it was a thing to read ghost stories on Christmas Eve. This seems truly bizarre to me but Charles Dickens makes me think it must be true 🤔Merry Christmas Littens 🎄 hope your day has been filled with bookish things to love

BookishMarginalia The Victorians were... quirky 😁 7y
