It‘s hard to read a play as opposed to seeing a play, but this play has a good plot and many twists. I read it in preparation for reading a novel that references the play and gives away the plot points. It‘s a decent murder mystery. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having just finished ROSEMARY'S BABY last week and THE EXORCIST yesterday, I was still in the mood for mystery but in a lighter shade. This one delivered. I snort-laughed out loud quite a few times and enjoyed the back-and-forth epee-style banter between Sidney and Clifford. I enjoyed it immensely as my afternoon read by the fireplace. Now, I'll have to see the movie and the movie SLEUTH. And Michael Caine stars in both of them. Who knew?

Played Clifford in my hometown‘s community theatre. Sidney and Cliff are one of the best duos in theatre history! Twisty and pulpy and devilishly fun.

I‘ve been pretty disciplined about reading from my shelves. But I did crack a little!

I got the The City We Became for the summer TOB. because library holds are crazee for this title! The Lost Man is actually for my mother but I‘ve no doubt I will read it when she‘s done, so I included it. Eight Perfect Murders is a total impulse buy...and because I want to read all eight of the referenced books, I also bought Deathtrap. 😀

batsy That's a nice edition of Deathtrap! I too want to read the mysteries that are referenced in Eight Perfect Murders before I read the book; seems like the best kind of homework 😆 4y
Ruthiella @batsy Thanks! Yes, this preparatory reading is going to be FUN! I “have” to read Double Indemnity, The Drowner, The Red House and Malice Aforethought too. 😁 4y
CarolynM I thought The Lost Man was great. Hope you and your mother both enjoy it. 4y

erzascarletbookgasm Echoing @CarolynM 👍. I also need to read a few books before reading Eight Perfect Murders! 4y
Ruthiella @CarolynM and @erzascarletbookgasm I was so-so about Harper‘s debut but thought Force of Nature was excellent. I look forward to The Lost Man 😀 4y
LeahBergen I want to read the referenced books, too! I was just eyeballing a copy of Malice Aforethought and have it sitting in one of my online shopper carts. 😆 @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy 4y
erzascarletbookgasm @LeahBergen @batsy @Ruthiella I have Malice TBR. I need to read Double Indemnity, The Drowner and Death Trap (too pricey the last I checked). The rest of the books I have read. 🙂 And I can‘t find a copy of The Drowner anywhere! ☹️ (edited) 4y
Ruthiella @erzascarletbookgasm I lucked out. My library has The Drowner available as an ebook. 4y

It was a fast read and one that I could not put down. I have loved all of his work that I have read so far. I highly recommend for anyone. If you don't like reading plays, give this a go. I usually do not like the feel of plays but I loved this one!

I've never read this before getting into this play at the community theatre, but I must say that it's an enormously promising first draft! It has the makings as we say.

Five characters. Two acts. Murder. Twists. Some humor. All packed into 80 pages! Quick compelling read for fans of Dial M for Murder or the remake A Perfect Murder.
