How I Discovered Poetry
How I Discovered Poetry | Marilyn Nelson
6 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
A powerful and thought-provoking Civil Rights era memoir from one of Americas most celebrated poets. Looking back on her childhood in the 1950s, Newbery Honor winner and National Book Award finalist Marilyn Nelson tells the story of her development as an artist and young woman through fifty eye-opening poems. Readers are given an intimate portrait of her growing self-awareness and artistic inspiration along with a larger view of the world around her: racial tensions, the Cold War era, and the first stirrings of the feminist movement. A first-person account of African-American history, this is a book to study, discuss, and treasure.

How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson is a wonderful story to begin a poetry unit. This Coretta Scott King Honor book is about Nelson‘s life and how she discovered poetry. Her story is told through P (sonnets). It was a very quick read, and at the end of the book she explains to the reader why and how she wrote her book. #LAE3414Sp19

Channing_Austin As an African American child growing up in the 1950s, her story touched on many topics like racism, and the Civil Rights Movement. In addition, she also talks about the atomic bomb and the early rumblings of the feminist movement. 6y
Channing_Austin I would use this book as part of an AS. Due to some of the content, this book should be limited to 6th grade students and above. Although this book is not the best for elementary students, there are topics that are addressed in this book that students need to learn about. So, if you are thinking about 6th grade or becoming a LA teacher in the secondary grade levels, this book would be a great addition to your classroom library. 6y
Channing_Austin As stated above, I would use this book as part of a poetry unit. This resource talks about poets and how they are inspired to write poetry. This lesson has students think about what inspires them, and then they write poems based on their passions. During this unit, I would use this book as an example for my students. You can hear Nelson‘s passion for life and writing through her poems. 6y

audrey.wilson I love your picture! So creative! Why a great post, I like how in depth you describe this book and included the grade levels to use with it. I look into this book for sure. 6y

This is a memoir of the multi-award winning poet's growing up years in the 1950s, travelling across America, as her father was a military officer. It's a collection of 50 poems with some family photos included. In the midst of the positive and negative experiences told through her poems, there is some humour embedded in the serious matters. All these experiences happened during the rising awareness of civil right and women's liberation movements.
